Modeling Impacts of Climate Change on Mangroves Worldwide 2012-2080

Given the multitude of ecosystem services provided by mangroves, it is important to understand their potential responses to global climate change. Extensive reviews of the literature and manipulative experiments suggest that mangroves will be impacted by climate change, but few studies have tested these predictions over large scales using statistical models. We provide the first example of applying species and community distribution models (SDMs and CDMs, respectively) to coastal mangroves worldwide. Species projected to shift their ranges polewards by at least 2 degrees of latitude consistently experience a decrease in the amount of suitable coastal area available to them. Central America and the Caribbean are forecast to lose more mangrove species than other parts of the world. We found that the extent and grain size, at which continuous CDM outputs are examined, independent of the grain size at which the models operate, can dramatically influence the number of pseudo-absences needed for optimal parameterization. The SDMs and CDMs presented here provide a first approximation of how mangroves will respond to climate change given simple correlative relationships between occurrence records and environmental data. Additional, precise georeferenced data on mangrove localities and concerted efforts to collect data on ecological processes across large-scale climatic gradients will enable future research to improve upon these correlative models.

The dataset describes the structure, composition, and condition of mangrove forests in Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) assessed Feb 2022 - Mar 2023, approximately 5 years post Hurricane Irma (2017) and concurrent with Hurricane Ian (Sep 2022). The dataset includes information on each stem greater than or equal to 1 cm DBH (diameter at breast height) rooted within 69 100 m2 circular plots. Information collected includes site ID, location, species, DBH, status (live or dead), damage associated with the hurricane, presence/absence of regrowth, presence/absence of adventitious roots, whether or not stem is part of a multi-stemmed individual, and the canopy conditions (whether the tree has a canopy or is only sprouting at the base of the tree or trunk). Land transformation on multi-decadal timescales reveals expanding croplands and settlements at the expense of tree-covered areas and mangroves in Nigeria

<p>A&nbsp;comparative assessment of the change patterns was conducted for seven&nbsp;categories&nbsp;using&nbsp;multi-decadal&nbsp;timescales in seven agroecological zones during three time-intervals (i.e., 1986 &ndash; 2000, 2000 &ndash; 2013, and 2013 &ndash; 2022).&nbsp;These selected periods cover important epochs in Nigeria&rsquo;s recent history. To examine how much humans have appropriated natural cover (HANLC) in Nigeria over the last four decades, we differentiated natural covers (e.g., tree-covered areas, grasslands, wetlands, and waterbodies) from human activity-related uses (e.g., cropland, artificial surfaces and otherland). To identify trajectories of changes signifying human appropriation of land cover, we evaluated the drivers and processes underlying these major transitions, 1) Natural regeneration and afforestation, 2) Cropland expansion, and 3) Settlement and infrastructure development.&nbsp;Cropland expansion is Nigeria&rsquo;s most widespread change process with much loss of croplands related to natural regeneration and settlement expansion.&nbsp;The transition matrix is provided showing the extent of land-cover changes in Nigeria over almost four decades (1986 - 2022).&nbsp;Major land cover transitions in each agroecological zone is presented. Analysis of land cover change in each agroecological zone is over 100% when areas of persistence (i.e., areas of no change) are not considered in the analysis.</p>

Mangrove biomass and root architecture in recycled glass sand, SE Louisiana 2023-2024

As coastal regions experience accelerating land loss, artificial substrates may be useful in restoration efforts to replenish sediment and facilitate plant colonization. Recycled glass sand is a potential artificial substrate for marsh building due to its sustainability, availability, and similarity to natural substrates. However, differences in texture and availability of microbiota necessitate investigating how it affects plant growth. We tested the effect of three substrates (conventionally used dredged river sand, recycled glass sand, and a 50:50 mix) and inoculation with natural soil microbes on the biomass and root architecture of black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) in a 5.5 month greenhouse experiment.

Mangrove Coast Collaborative Project, Hydrologic monitoring data in mangrove forests, Jobos Bay NERR, April 2024 - December 2024

The dataset describes the hydrologic conditions of the soil porewater (water level, conductivity, and temperature) at a depth of ~70 cm below ground in six mangrove forest locations in Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR) at 30-minute intervals between April 2024 to December 2024. Locations of minimal forest recovery following the effects of Hurricane Maria (September 2017) were identified and selected for hydrologic monitoring coincident with sites sampled for structural metrics in 2022. One reference site, defined as a site that was observed to be recovering following the hurricane, was selected in black mangrove forest. Two of the six sampling locations were selected to monitor effects of human encroachment on the western boundary of the reserve. These two sites were not coincident with structural sampling plots established in 2022. This dataset is associated with the MCC Catalyst Project entitled Limits of Resilience (2023-2025) funded by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Science Collaborative.

The design consists of three sites in mainland/interior black mangroves and three sites on ocean-facing islands, all of which are located on the east side of Hurricane Irma eyewall. In each group, two of the sites selected were considered sites of minimal recovery whereas one site was selected as a reference (location of recovering mangroves). This dataset is associated with the MCC Catalyst Project entitled Limits of Resilience (2023-2025) funded by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Science Collaborative.
