Annual precipitation and photo-derived vegetation and litter cover (2013-2021) used for analysis in the manuscript “Growing grasses in the desert: Multi-scale Interactions and State Change Reversal in Drylands”

This dataset contains water year precipitation collected from meteorological stations, litter and vegetation cover values derived from overhead photos, and litter and soil accumulation in lateral photos in a long-term experiment (2013-2021) of cross-scale interactions (CSIs) at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Manipulations were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, control without manipulations. Litter, soil, and vegetation cover were estimated using repeat overhead photographs of microplots within treatment and control plots. Litter and soil accumulation were estimated from lateral photos of ConMods. This dataset utilized QuickBird imagery from 2011 to assess ground cover classes within the Jornada Basin, focusing on bare ground, herbaceous, and shrub cover. Daily precipitation data collected from 13 meteorological stations were used to calculate water year (1 October-30 September) precipitation from 2013 through 2021. This dataset provides supporting data for the manuscript "Growing grasses in the desert: Multi-scale Interactions and State Change Reversal in Drylands" by Peters et al.

Aggregated 30-minute soil water and temperature data from 9 NPP shrub sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 2013 - 2024 (for Pinos et al 2025 manuscript)

This is an aggregated dataset of 30-minute soil temperature and moisture data from 9 shrub-dominated NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Collection of soil volumetric water content data at all of the 15 Jornada LTER NPP sites, New Mexico, supports the environmental monitoring objectives of the Jornada LTER monitoring program that look at plant-soil water dynamics. Volumetric water content and soil temperature are measured every 30 minutes at an automated meteorological station installed at all 15 of the Jornada LTER program’s NPP sites. This dataset aggregates only the stations located at the 9 sites with shrub-dominated vegetation cover (creosotebush, tarbush, and mesquite dune sites). Measurements are made every 30 minutes at 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm soil depths. This dataset is in support of the Pinos et al. 2025 manuscript.

This is an aggregated dataset of 30-minute summary meteorology data from 9 shrub-dominated NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Average air temperature, relative humidity, total precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, and solar radiation are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated meteorological station installed at all 15 of the Jornada LTER program’s NPP sites. This dataset aggregates only the stations located at the 9 sites with shrub-dominated vegetation cover (creosote, tarbush, and mesquite sites). Wind speed is measured at 75 cm, 150 cm, and 300 cm, wind direction at approximately 3m, and air temperature and relative humidity at approximate 2.5m. Solar radiation is measured at 3m. This dataset is in support of the Pinos et al. 2025 manuscript.

Dataset and program scripts for the reproducibility of the hierarchical data structure file. Related to the manuscript entitled: Hierarchical Representation of Measurement Data, Metrological Uncertainty and Metadata for Calibrated Battery Tests

<p>We present an interoperable hierarchical data representation for battery tests, leading to improved scalability of data transmission and enhanced data accessibility and comprehensibility for both human interpretation and machine processing. The hierarchical data format includes the raw trace electrical measurement data, the metrological calibration and uncertainty data, the metadata such as experimental settings, instruments and software versions, as well as post-processed data such as electrochemical model fit parameters. This data representation allows repetition of the battery test under the exact same conditions such that identical results are achieved within defined error bounds. This is in line with the general F.A.I.R. data approach and provides repeatability and traceability in the battery value chain. As an application of the hierarchical data representation, we show the classification of cells as pass/fail being performed with quantitative confidence levels. We demonstrate the complete workflow of establishing the hierarchical data structure for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), starting from metrological traceability of the calibration and uncertainty analysis towards the storage of the structured data as a single integrated file that preserves the hierarchical data format.</p>

Photosynthetic quotients in aquatic ecosystems: data and code supporting Trentman et al. 2023 manuscript in L&O Letters

This study provides a summary of the mismatch between our current knowledge and the application of the photosynthetic quotient (PQ). We use data from the Upper Clark Fork River (UCFR) as a case study example of how the PQ may vary in space and time based on environmental conditions. Surface water sample measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (T), nutrients (NO3-N, NH4-N, SRP), and several metabolism indicators are represented in this data product. Figures represent data from two sites on the mainstem of the Upper Clark Fork River (UCFR) over a roughly two-year period, from 2019 to 2021. Some measurements are derived from existing data products or manuscripts, including DOT (Valett, et al., 2023); nutrients (H. M. Valett, Dec. 2, 2022, pers. comm); air pressure (Deer Lodge Weather Station, 2023); underlying data for Trentman et al. (2023) Figure 2 and Figure 4e and 4f (via Burris, 1981); and SI-Figure2 USGS gage data (USGS, 2023). Products unique to this data product include metabolism data (Trentman, et al., 2023 (Figure 5)), chamber data supporting Trentman, et al., (2023) Figure 6, and code simulations/data. All analytes and variables are documented in the project data dictionary. For details on data collection methods, see the methods section, the manuscript, and/or referenced data products.

NEON soil inorganic nitrogen measurements 2017-2020, derived data and code for Earth's Future manuscript

Nitrogen (N) is a key limiting nutrient in terrestrial ecosystems, but there remain critical gaps in our ability to predict and model controls on soil N cycling. This may be in part due to lack of standardized sampling across broad spatial-temporal scales. In a paper submitted for publication in Earth's future, we introduce a continentally distributed, publicly available dataset collected by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) that can help fill these gaps. To overcome methodological challenges and generate a standardized dataset, we produced a derived data version of soil inorganic N pools and net N transformation rate tables, which accounts for nitrite contamination in blanks. This derived dataset is then used to evaluate sources of variation within the NEON sampling design with mixed effects models, and we also compare measured net N mineralization to simulated fluxes from the Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2).

Data package supporting manuscript "Widespread Heterogeneity in Density-Dependent Mortality of Nearshore Fishes"

This repository contains the complete data synthesis and analysis pipeline for a global meta-analysis on density-dependent mortality in reef fishes. We estimated mortality parameters (α and β) from >30 ecological studies and explored how ecological traits, experimental methods, and phylogenetic history explain variation in density dependence. It comprises eight data tables in csv format, three .tre files for phylogenetic trees (see method document for data sources), and the zipped code folder (including 12 R scripts) to ensure transparent, end-to-end reproducibility of data processing, analysis, and visualization. This package supports the manuscript “Widespread Heterogeneity in Density-Dependent Mortality of Nearshore Fishes” by Stier & Osenberg (Ecology Letters).
