The MAT_STOCKS database: economy-wide material flows and material stock dynamics around the world

Material stocks of buildings, infrastructure, machinery and other short-lived products form the biophysical basis of production and consumption. They are a crucial lever for resource efficiency and a sustainable circular economy, and for climate change mitigation. Here, we provide a global, country-level database of national-level material stocks differentiated by four end-uses and four summary material groups, for 177 countries from 1900 to 2016.

This MAT_STOCKS database is derived from the economy-wide, dynamic, inflow-driven stock-flow model of Material Inputs, Stocks and Outputs (MISO2) (Wiedenhofer et al. 2024). MISO2 covers 14 supply chain processes from raw material extraction to processing, trade, recycling and waste management, as well as 13 end-use types of stocks. Further information on the model and its system definition, as well as the model input data and assumptions and data processing procedures can be found in the accompanying peer-reviewed publication. The model code and exemplary input data can be found in the GitHub repository.

The MAT_STOCKS database version 1.0 provided here is summarized from the more detailed modeling presented in (Wiedenhofer et al. 2024). The dataset here gives:

Material stocks by 4 main end-uses: buildings, infrastructure, machinery and other short-lived products (summarized from 13 detailed end-uses modeled) (S_10)

Material stocks and flows by 4 main material groupings: biomass, non-metallic minerals, metals, as well as fossil-fuels derived materials (summarized from 23 raw materials and 20 stock-building materials modeled)

Flows: Gross Additions to Stocks (F_9_10) and End-of-Life/Waste potentials (F_10_11)

177 countries

1900 to 2016

All units in kilotons. Paramter names are in accordance with the system definition given in the publication.

Additionally, this repository includes all data presented in the figures of the related journal article.

Further information

This dataset complements the following scientific article:

Wiedenhofer, Dominik and Streeck, Jan and Wieland, Hanspeter and Grammer, Benedikt and Baumgart, Andre and Plank, Barbara and Helbig, Christoph and Pauliuk, Stefan and Haberl, Helmut and Krausmann, Fridolin, From Extraction to End-uses and Waste Management: Modelling Economy-wide Material Cycles and Stock Dynamics Around the World (2024). Journal of Industrial Ecology, https://doi.org/10.1111/jiec.13575

The model code and its documentation are available on Github and Zenodo (see links below). A benchmark dataset for the grazing flow over porous materials

Wind-tunnel data of a grazing flow over porous wall-inserts to be used as a benchmark dataset for the development and validation of numerical modeling approaches of flows over and through porous media.

The dataset contains several profiles along the streamwise extent of the wall-insert of the mean velocity magnitude, the turbulent intensity, and the turbulent length scale. Also included are some boundary-layer parameters of these profiles. These have been derived from single-component constant temperature hot-wire measurements.

Additionally, the spectra of the unsteady wall-pressure fluctuations at several locations on the upper and lower surfaces of the porous wall-inserts are provided. These unsteady pressure measurements have been acquired using semi-infinite waveguide-type remote-microphone probes.

Tested are two porous media with the same diamond-lattice pattern structure but different permeabilities and a reference solid-walled case. All three cases are tested at three inflow velocities: 15 m/s, 20 m/s, and 25 m/s.

Modification in v3: Correction of permeability values in Table 1 on page 3 of AIAA_Manuscript_GrazingFlowPorousMaterials_v3.pdf.

Dataset: A review of methods to trace material flows into final products in dynamic material flow analysis - from industry shipments in physical units to monetary input-output tables (p

Dynamic material flow analysis (dMFA) is widely used to model stock-flow dynamics. To appropriately represent material lifetimes, recycling potentials, and service provision, dMFA requires data about the allocation of economy-wide material consumption to different end-use products or sectors, that is, the different product stocks, in which material consumption accumulates. Previous estimates of this allocation only cover few years, countries, and product groups. Recently, several new methods for estimating end-use product allocation in dMFA were proposed, which so far lack systematic comparison. We review and systematize five methods for tracing material consumption into end-use products in inflow-driven dMFA and discuss their strengths and limitations. Widely used data on industry shipments in physical units have low spatio-temporal coverage, which limits their applicability across countries and years. Monetary input–output tables (MIOTs) are widely available and their economy-wide coverage makes them a valuable source to approximate material end-uses. We find four distinct MIOT-based methods: consumption-based, waste input–output MFA (WIO-MFA), Ghosh absorbing Markov chain, and partial Ghosh. We show that when applied to a given MIOT, the methods’ underlying input–output models yield the same results, with the exception of the partial Ghosh method, which involves simplifications. For practical applications, the MIOT system boundary must be aligned to those of dMFA, which involves the removal of service flows, sector (dis)aggregation, and re-defining specific intermediate outputs as final demand. Theoretically, WIO-MFA, applied to a modified MIOT, produces the most accurate results as it excludes massless and waste transactions. In part 2 of this work, we compare methods empirically and suggest improvements for aligning MIOT-dMFA system boundaries.

NIR-MFCO dataset: Near-infrared-based false-color images of post-consumer plastics at different material flow compositions and material flow presentations

Determining mass-based material flow compositions (MFCOs) is crucial for assessing and optimizing the recycling of post-consumer plastics. Currently, MFCOs in plastic recycling are mostly determined through manual sorting analysis, but the use of inline near-infrared (NIR) sensors holds potential to automate the characterization process, paving the way for novel sensor-based material flow characterization (SBMC) applications. The NIR-MFCO dataset aims to expedite SBMC research by providing NIR-based false-color images of plastic material flows with their corresponding MFCOs. The false-color images were created through the pixel-based classification of binary material mixtures using a hyperspectral imaging camera (EVK HELIOS NIR G2-320; 990 nm – 1678 nm wavelength range) and the on-chip classification algorithm (CLASS 32). The resulting NIR-MFCO dataset includes n = 880 false-color images from three test series: (T1) high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes, (T2a) post-consumer HDPE packaging and PET bottles, and (T2b) post-consumer HDPE packaging and beverage cartons for n = 11 different HDPE shares (0% - 50%) at four different material flow presentations (singled, monolayer, bulk height H1, bulk height H2). The dataset can be used, e.g., to train machine learning algorithms, evaluate the accuracy of inline SBMC applications, and deepen the understanding of segregation effects of anthropogenic material flows, thus further advancing SBMC research and enhancing post-consumer plastic recycling.

Supplementary material for: PhyloCoalSimulations: A simulator for network multispecies coalescent models, including a new extension for the inheritance of gene flow

We consider the evolution of phylogenetic gene trees along phylogenetic species networks, according to the network multispecies coalescent process, and introduce a new network coalescent model with correlated inheritance of gene flow. This model generalizes two traditional versions of the network coalescent: with independent or common inheritance. At each reticulation, multiple lineages of a given locus are inherited from parental populations chosen at random, either independently across lineages, or with positive correlation according to a Dirichlet process. This process may account for locus-specific probabilities of inheritance, for example.

We implemented the simulation of gene trees under these network coalescent models in the Julia package PhyloCoalSimulations, which depends on PhyloNetworks and its powerful network manipulation tools. Input species phylogenies can be read in extended Newick format, either in numbers of generations or in coalescent units. Simulated gene trees can be written in Newick format, and in a way that preserves information about their embedding within the species network. This embedding can be used for downstream purposes, such as to simulate species-specific processes like rate variation across species, or for other scenarios as illustrated in this note. This package should be useful for simulation studies and simulation-based inference methods. The software is available open source with documentation and a tutorial at https://github.com/cecileane/PhyloCoalSimulations.jl.

Mapping and modelling global mobility infrastructure stocks, material flows and their embodied greenhouse gas emissions - Data

Dynamics of societal material stocks such as buildings and infrastructures and their spatial patterns drive surging resource use and emissions. Building up and maintaining stocks requires large amounts of resources; currently stock-building materials amount to almost 60% of all materials used by humanity. Buildings, infrastructures and machinery shape social practices of production and consumption, thereby creating path dependencies for future resource use.
