Growth-related formation mechanism of I3-type basal stacking fault in epitaxially grown hexagonal Ge-2H

<p>The hexagonal-2H crystal phase of Ge recently emerged as a promising direct bandgap semiconductor in the mid-infrared range providing new prospects of additional opto-electronic functionalities of group-IV semiconductors (Ge and SiGe). The controlled synthesis of such hexagonal (2H) Ge phase is a challenge that can be overcome by using wurtzite GaAs nanowires as a template. However, depending on growth conditions, unusual basal stacking faults (BSFs) of I3-type are formed in the metastable 2H structure. The growth of such core/shell heterostructures is observed <em>in situ</em> and in real-time by means of environmental transmission electron microscopy using chemical vapour deposition. The observations provide direct evidence of a step-flow growth of Ge-2H epilayers and reveal the growth-related formation of I3-BSF during unstable growth. Their formation conditions are dynamically investigated. Through these <em>in situ</em> observations, we can propose a scenario for the nucleation of I3-type BSFs that is likely valid for any metastable hexagonal 2H or wurtzite structures grown on m-plane substrates. Conditions are identified to avoid their formation for perfect crystalline synthesis of SiGe-2H.</p> <p>This data set contains all the processed supporting videos of in-situ TEM observations .</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>All data included in this data repository is ancillary to the manuscript "Energy dissipation during dynamic weakening in calcite-bearing fault rocks", submitted to Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.&nbsp;</p><p>The data consists in time series of high velocity friction experiments run with SHIVA (INGV, Rome), time series acquired from a two-color pyrometer (UC3M), the synchronization of the two, and numerical models. The data format is .mat, proprietary to Matlab, but they can be easily accessed with Python (see&nbsp;<a href="https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/generated/scipy.io.loadmat.html">link</a>). Each .mat contains vector of the measured variables when opened from Matlab, or dictionaries when opened using the scipy.loadmat() function.&nbsp;</p><p>SHIVA and PYRO red data (calibrated data), fin data (synchronized data), and shivaRED vect data (numerical model data) are included in this data repository in separate folders. Numerical models are grouped in subfolder by type of model (the relation fin data to model is 1:n). We included the scripts to convert SHIVA raw data into SHIVA red data (<a href="https://github.com/aretu/shivaUNIX">link to shivaUNIX</a>), SHIVA and PYRO red data into fin data (/scripts/syncing2021.m), to obtain numerical models from fin data (<a href="https://github.com/aretu/shivaRED">link to shivaRED</a>), and to plot data (/scripts/making plots.ipynb).</p>

Experimental Data Collection and Modeling for Nominal and Fault Conditions on Electro-Mechanical Actuators

Being relatively new to the field, electromechanical actuators in aerospace applications lack the knowledge base compared to ones accumulated for the other actuator types, especially when it comes to fault detection and characterization. Lack of health monitoring data from fielded systems and prohibitive costs of carrying out real flight tests push for the need of building system models and designing affordable but realistic experimental setups. This paper presents our approach to accomplish a comprehensive test environment equipped with fault injection and data collection capabilities. Efforts also include development of multiple models for EMA operations, both in nominal and fault conditions that can be used along with measurement data to generate effective diagnostic and prognostic estimates. A detailed description has been provided about how various failure modes are inserted in the test environment and corresponding data is collected to verify the physics based models under these failure modes that have been developed in parallel. A design of experiment study has been included to outline the details of experimental data collection. Furthermore, some ideas about how experimental results can be extended to real flight environments through actual flight tests and using real flight data have been presented. Finally, the roadmap leading from this effort towards developing successful prognostic algorithms for electromechanical actuators is discussed.*
