<p>Methotrexate is an immunosuppressive medication that has been used for decades in the management of various autoimmune diseases, including Crohn's disease. Methotrexate works by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme involved in DNA synthesis, which leads to reduced proliferation of immune cells and subsequent dampening of the inflammatory response. In IBD, methotrexate is primarily used for inducing and maintaining remission, particularly in patients with Crohn's disease who may not respond adequately to other treatments, such as thiopurines or biologics. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to enhance efficacy and reduce the need for corticosteroids.
