Hoedjiespunt Middle Stone Age Dataset, Western Cape, South Africa

This Middle Stone Age archaeological dataset from Hoedjiespunt 1 was collected in 2011 by a team from the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the University of Tübingen (Germany) headed by Nicholas J. Conard. South African and European researchers collaborated on this project, with John E. Parkington, Katherine Kyriacou, Deano Stynder, Graham Avery, and Chantal Tribolo making substantial contributions. The site is located within the property of Transnet National Ports Authority in the municipality of Saldanha, Western Cape, South Africa.

The locality of Hoedjiespunt 1 was well known as a paleontological site since at least the 1990s, when the site yielded several important Middle Pleistocene hominin remains dated between 200,000 and 350,000 years. The paleontological site also yielded a well preserved assemblage of fauna, including terrestrial and marine mammals, shellfish and ostrich eggshell. The excavators interpreted the accumulation of these finds as the remains of a hyena den. Cultural remains such as lithic artifacts were absent from the paleontological site, which is situated immediately below the archaeological site.

The 2011 field work at the archaeological site of Hoedjiespunt 1 took place with the help of students from the universities of Tübingen and Cape Town. The datasets are predominantly in English (with some parts in German) and include field data in the MAIN table. Further analytical data for several classes of artifacts include: LITHICS, FAUNA, OCHRE, and BUCKETS.

All of the archaeological materials collected in 2011 are curated by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Cape Town in Rondebosch, South Africa. Funding for this research came mainly from the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the University of Tübingen. Significant support was provided by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Cape Town and the Iziko South African Museums.

Importnat references for the paleontological excavations are listed here, while the main publications associated with the 2011 excavations are presented below in the reference section:

Berger, L.R. & Parkington, J.E. Raw Data for Mapping Repositories and their Institutional Open Science Policies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)

Persistent Identifiers (PIDs), particularly Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), are crucial for establishing a robust and globally accessible research infrastructure. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, a diverse array of research outputs and resources are produced and published in repositories. However, a significant number of these repositories, and outputs remain undiscoverable in global registries and aggregators.

These three datasets provides comprehensive information on the adoption of repositories, Open Access mandates, and DOIs adoption in MENA countries. It includes detailed records from different registry sources and repository platforms.

You can read the full report titled 'Mapping Repositories and their Institutional Open Science Policies in MENA' at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11370031

Leaf litter collected using baskets over the middle of the channel in Prieta arm B and Gatos
This is a long-term monitoring of leaf litter inputs into Prieta Stream, arm B, and into the Gatos stream. The monitoring is conducted using litter traps similar tho those used in other LTER project. Baskets are suspended over the channel and are emptied every other week. All material is dried and identified. Vegetation surveys in the riparian (bosque) corridor of the Middle Rio Grande valley, NM
This dataset contains vegetation cover information from 34 long-term Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP) sites from 2000 – 2021. Data were collected along ten 30-m transects at each site at the centimeter scale each year in August-early October as funding and site access allowed. At the fullest extent, sites spanned 520 km of the riparian forest along the Rio Grande. The purpose of this dataset is to track plant species at sites along the Rio Grande in New Mexico. From this dataset, changes in plant species abundance, richness, and species diversity can be tracked and analyzed with ecosystem drivers such as flooding, fire, species removal/fuel reduction projects, and climate change. Species are coded using USDA Plant Database codes, allowing species information to be added to each species, including origin (native or nonnative), duration (e.g., annual, biennial, perennial), and plant type (e.g., grass, forb, vine, shrub, tree). This dataset has allowed the tracking of the ascendance of nonnatives in some sites, the recovery of natives in other sites, success or lack of success following restoration projects, and records of new species occurring in various counties and the state of New Mexico.
30-m Spatial Resolution Bioclimatic Dataset of 1991-2020 Climate Normals for Hubei Province, the Yangtze River Middle Reaches

Brief Introduction of the Dataset

This bioclimatic dataset is the product of research article "Mapping 30-m Resolution Bioclimatic Variables During 1991-2020 Climate Normals for Hubei Province, the Yangtze River Middle Reaches." published in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing.

The dataset contains 19 30-m resolution average bioclimatic variables during 1991-2020 Climate Normals for Hubei Province (108°21′42″—116°07′50″ E, 29°01′53″—33°6′47″ N), the core region of the Yangtze River middle reaches. The dataset was constructed by statistically downscaling the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) 1-km monthly climate variables (1440 in total), cablirating with ground observation data with 82 weather stations and aggregating based on the defination of 19 bioclimatic variables. The downscaling of four 1-km Climatic Research Unit monthly climate variables including monthly maximum, mean, minimum temperature and precipitation was firstly achieved by random forest model with 30-m resolution terrain and spatial data. Then the interpolation-based geographical differential analysis (GDA) was applied to improve the accuracy of downscaled products based on ground observation data. Finally, the bioclimatic variables were aggregated based on their definitions and averaged for the 30 years. The Yangtze River middle reaches is abundant of forestry, agriculture, biodiversity resources that requires finer bioclimatic data for better understands of these aspects. This dataset will provide higher spatial accuracy, more information and applicability in finer regional studies in the Yangtze River middle reaches.

Description of the 19 Bioclimatic Variables

The dataset contains 19 geotiff files in total. File names and the corresponding full name of bioclimatic variables are described as follows:

Bio01 Mean annual air temperature (℃)
Bio02 Mean diurnal air temperature range (℃)
Bio03 Isothermality (%)
Bio04 Temperature seasonality (℃)
Bio05 Mean daily maximum air temperature of the warmest month (℃)
Bio06 Mean daily minimum air temperature of the coldest month (℃)
Bio07 Annual range of air temperature (℃)
Bio08 Mean daily mean air temperatures of the wettest quarter (℃)
Bio09 Mean daily mean air temperatures of the driest quarter (℃)
Bio10 Mean daily mean air temperatures of the warmest quarter (℃)
Bio11 Mean daily mean air temperatures of the coldest quarter (℃)
Bio12 Annual precipitation amount (mm)
Bio13 Precipitation amount of the wettest month (mm)
Bio14 Precipitation amount of the driest month (mm)
Bio15 Precipitation seasonality (%)
Bio16 Precipitation amount of the wettest quarter (mm)
Bio17 Precipitation amount of the driest quarter (mm)
Bio18 Precipitation amount of the warmest quarter (mm)
Bio19 Precipitation amount of the coldest quarter (mm)

Others

More information related to bioclimatic variables can be found on https://chelsa-climate.org/bioclim/
