<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <ol> <li>In migratory animals, the developmental period from inexperienced juveniles to breeding adults could be a key life stage in shaping population migration patterns. Nevertheless, the development of migration routines in early life remains underexplored. While age-related changes in migration routes and timing have been described in obligate migrants, most investigations into the ontogeny of partial migrants only focused on age-dependency of migration as a binary tactic (migrant or resident), and variations in routes and timing among individuals classified as ‘migrants’ is rarely considered. </li> <li>To fill this gap, we study the ontogeny of migration destination, route and timing in a partially migratory red kite (<em>Milvus milvus</em>) population. Using an extensive GPS-tracking dataset (292 fledglings and 38 adults, with 1 – 5 migrations tracked per individual), we studied how 9 different migration characteristics changed with age and breeding status in migrant individuals, many of which become resident later in life.</li> <li>Individuals departed later from and arrived earlier at the breeding areas as they aged, resulting in a gradual prolongation of stay in the breeding area by two months from the first to the fifth migration. Individuals delayed southward migration in the year prior to territory acquirement, and they further delayed it after occupying a territory. Migration routes became more direct with age. Individuals were highly faithful to their wintering site. Migration distance shortened only slightly with age and was more similar among siblings than among unrelated individuals.</li> <li>The large gradual changes in northward and southward migrations suggest a high degree of plasticity in temporal characteristics during the developmental window. However, the high wintering site fidelity points towards large benefits of site familiarity, prompting spatial migratory plasticity to be expressed through a switch to residency. </li> <li>The contrasting patterns of trajectories of age-related changes between spatial and temporal migration characteristics might reflect different mechanisms underlying the expression of plasticity. Investigating such patterns among species along the entire spectrum of migration tactics would enable further understanding of the plastic responses exhibited by migratory species to rapid environmental changes.</li> </ol>

Age-dependent timing and routes demonstrate developmental plasticity in a long-distance migratory bird
<p>1. Longitudinal tracking studies have revealed consistent differences in the migration patterns of individuals from the same populations. The sources or processes causing this individual variation are largely unresolved. As a result, it is mostly unknown how much, how fast, and when animals can adjust their migrations to changing environments. 2. We studied the ontogeny of migration in a long-distance migratory shorebird, the black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa limosa), a species known to exhibit marked individuality in the migratory routines of adults. By observing how and when these individual differences arise, we aimed to elucidate whether individual differences in migratory behaviour are inherited or emerge as a result of developmental plasticity. 3. We simultaneously tracked juvenile and adult godwits from the same breeding area on their south- and northward migrations. To determine how and when individual differences begin to arise, we related juvenile migration routes, timing, and mortality rates to hatch date and year of birth. Then, we compared adult and juvenile migration patterns to identify potential age-dependent differences. 4. In juveniles, the timing of their first southward departure was related to hatch date. However, their subsequent migration routes, orientation, destination, migratory duration, and likelihood of mortality were unrelated to the year or timing of migration, or their sex. Juveniles left the Netherlands after all tracked adults. They then flew non-stop to West Africa more often and incurred higher mortality rates than adults. Some juveniles also took routes and visited stopover sites far outside the well-documented adult migratory corridor. Such juveniles, however, were not more likely to die. 5. We found that juveniles exhibited different migratory patterns than adults, but no evidence that these behaviours are under natural selection. We thus eliminate the possibility that the individual differences observed among adult godwits are present at birth or during their first migration. This adds to the mounting evidence that animals possess the developmental plasticity to change their migration later in life in response to environmental conditions as those conditions are experienced.</p>
Do departure and flight route decisions correlate with immune parameters in migratory songbirds?
<p>Many songbirds migrate twice a year to exploit seasonally available resources. These journeys are energetically demanding and the energy reserves of these small birds are limited. Accordingly, most of the time migrating is spent during stopovers that serve to rest, replenish resources and recover. While external influences, like prevailing weather conditions and resource availability, are well studied with regard to stopover behavior and departure decisions, studies on how birds' individual physiological conditions and stopover decisions may be linked are scarce.</p> <p>We used a large-scale radio-telemetry network covering the German Bight (SE North Sea) to study how birds' immunological constitution at stopover may correlate with departure and flight behavior in five species of short- to medium-distance migratory songbirds. We measured markers of the innate (bacterial killing activity, lysozyme concentration, natural antibodies, and complement titers) and acquired immune function (immunoglobulin Y) in the birds' plasma. After sampling, we tracked the birds' behavior in terms of stopover duration as well as flight routes and flight distances within the telemetry network after departure.</p> <p>We found that stopover durations were positively related to natural antibodies and immunoglobulin Y across species and to the bacterial killing ability solely in song thrushes in spring, while no relations became apparent in fall. Flight distances were linked positively to immunoglobulin Y concentrations in both spring and fall, though not in all of the investigated species. Coastal and offshore-oriented routes were taken independent of the birds' immune status.</p> <p>Our study for the first time shows that the migratory behavior of songbirds in the wild is correlated with their immune status, not only during but also beyond stopover. Further, birds with increased complement titers and Immunoglobulin Y concentrations, either due to recent infection or greater investment in their immune function, took additional time at their stopover sites, probably to reach their breeding grounds in good condition. During the less time-constrained fall season, stopovers were generally prolonged, independent from the birds' immune status, and any delays taken to improve immune status are most likely not detrimental in terms of fitness.</p>

The strength of migratory connectivity is a measure of the cohesion of populations among phases of the annual cycle, including breeding, migration, and wintering. Many Nearctic-Neotropical species have strong migratory connectivity between breeding and wintering phases of the annual cycle. It is less clear if this strength persists during migration when multiple endogenous and exogenous factors may decrease the cohesion of populations among routes or through time along the same routes. We sampled three bird species, American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla), and wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina), during spring migration through the Gulf of Mexico region to test if breeding populations differentiate spatially among migration routes or temporally along the same migration routes and the extent to which within-population timing is a function of sex, age, and carry-over from winter habitat, as measured by stable carbon isotope values in claws (δ13C). To make quantitative comparisons of migratory connectivity possible, we developed and used new methodology to estimate the strength of migratory connectivity (MC) from probabilistic origin assignments identified using stable hydrogen isotopes in feathers (δ2H). We found support for spatial differentiation among routes by American redstarts and ovenbirds and temporal differentiation along routes by American redstarts. After controlling for breeding origin, the timing of American redstart migration differed among ages and sexes and ovenbird migration timing was influenced by carry-over from winter habitat. The strength of migratory connectivity did not differ among the three species, with each showing weak breeding-to-spring migration MC relative to prior assessments of breeding-wintering connectivity. Our work begins to fill an essential gap in methodology and understanding of the extent to which populations remain together during migration, information critical for a full annual cycle perspective on the population dynamics and conservation of migratory animals.
Magnetic susceptibility-weighted imaging mapped the migratory route of a paragonimus in brain
<p>A 53-year-old man with a recent history of left temporal lobe hemorrhage presented with weakness of left upper limb for 4 days. Paragonimus eggs were detected in patient's sputum. Work up revealed paragonimiasis, a lung fluke worm infection endemic to East Africa, West Africa and South America which rarely involves in brain. Characteristic tunnel sign was visualized on brain MRI. Notably, susceptibility-weighted imaging revealed a migratory pattern of the parasite from the left temporal lobe to the right parietal lobe and resultant patchy hemorrhage. Treatment with praziquantel resulted in favorable outcome without residual deficits.</p>

Map of Kusunda migratory route and present settlements in Nepal (colour version)
<p>This map shows the approximate migratory route that the two remaining bands of Kusunda people took around the turn and into the first quarter of the 20th century, with the center in Balkōṭ, formerly in Gulmī district, now in Arghākhām̐cī. As the members of the exogamous Kusunda clans in these bands did not find suitable partners to marry, they had to marry sedentary partners of other ethnic and caste groups. Gradually, all Kusunda settled down, and the present Kusunda population in the various districts of western Nepal still reflect the old migration pattern. </p> <p>This map was created by Yeshy T. Sotrug based on analysis by Timotheus A.
