DU00-W-212 airfoil polars, mimicked DanAero inflow

<p>Averaged lift and drag coeffficients of a DU00-W-212 profile in turbulent inflow&nbsp;generated with an active grid at Reynolds numbers 500,000&nbsp;and 900,000. CTU-SME-11: a labeled dataset with real benign and malicious network traffic mimicking a small medium-size enterprise environment

<p>As technology advances, the number and complexity of cyber-attacks increase, forcing defense techniques to be updated and improved. To help develop effective tools for detecting security threats it is essential to have reliable and representative security datasets. Many existing security datasets have limitations that make them unsuitable for research, including lack of labels, unbalanced traffic, and outdated threats.</p> <p>CTU-SME-11 is a labeled network dataset designed to address the limitations of previous datasets. The dataset was captured in a real network that mimics a small-medium enterprise setting. Raw network traffic (packets) was captured from 11 devices using tcpdump for a duration of 7 days, from 20th to 26th of February, 2023 in Prague, Czech Republic. The devices were chosen based on the enterprise setting and consists of IoT, desktop and mobile devices, both bare metal and virtualized. The devices were infected with malware or exposed to Internet attacks, and factory reset to restore benign behavior.&nbsp;</p> <p>The raw data was processed to generate network flows (Zeek logs) which were analyzed and labeled. The dataset contains two types of levels, a high level label and a descriptive label, which were put by experts. The former can take three values, benign, malicious or background. The latter contains detailed information about the specific behavior observed in the network flows. The dataset contains 99 million labeled network flows. The overall compressed size of the dataset is 80GB and the uncompressed size is 170GB.</p>

Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: growth and enzyme activity traits of soil fungi isolated from CCASE in July 2017, grown under a common garden experiment in the laboratory that mimicked CCASE soil temperature treatments

Projections for the northeastern U.S. indicate that mean air temperatures will rise and snowfall will become less frequent, causing more frequent soil freezing. To test fungal responses to these combined chronic and extreme soil temperature changes, we conducted a laboratory-based common garden experiment with soil fungi that had been subjected to different combinations of growing season soil warming, winter soil freeze/thaw cycles, and ambient conditions for four years in the field. We found that fungi originating from field plots experiencing a combination of growing season warming and winter freeze/thaw cycles had inherently lower activity of acid phosphatase, but higher cellulase activity, that could not be reversed in the lab. In addition, fungi quickly adjusted their physiology to freeze/thaw cycles in the laboratory, reducing growth rate and potentially reducing their carbon use efficiency. Our findings suggest that less than four years of new soil temperature conditions in the field can lead to physiological shifts by some soil fungi, as well as irreversible loss or acquisition of extracellular enzyme activity traits by other fungi. These findings could explain field observations of shifting soil carbon and nutrient cycling under simulated climate change. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Mimicking Natural Deterrent Strategies in Plants using Adhesive Spheres

<p>With a continuous increase in world population and food production, chemical pesticide use is growing accordingly, yet unsustainably. As chemical pesticides are harmful to the environment and pests develop resistance, sustainable and effective pesticide alternatives are needed. Inspired by nature, we mimic one defense strategy of plants, glandular trichomes, to shift away from using chemical pesticides by moving towards a physical immobilization strategy via adhesive particles. Through a controlled oxidation of a biobased starting material, triglyceride oils, an adhesive material is created while monitoring the reactive intermediates. After being milled into particles, nanoindentation shows these particles to be adhesive even at low contact forces. A suspension of particles is then sprayed onto chrysanthemum leaves and found to be highly effective at immobilizing a target pest, thrips, \textit{Frankliniella occidentalis}. Typical of small arthropod pests, thrips cause crop damage predominantly through virus transfer, which is prevented by their immobilization. We show that through this scalable fabrication process, biosourced materials can be used to create an effective, sustainable physical pesticide.</p>
