Nutrient mineralization from green leaves in litterbags of three mesh sizes in the LUQ-LTER Canopy Trimming 2 Experiment
Hurricanes generate disturbances in forests that alter physicochemical characteristics of the habitat by opening the canopy and depositing fresh wood and leaves. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of simulated hurricane driven changes to nutrient fluxes from litter to soil immediately following canopy disturbance. This study used three complete replicated blocks with two canopy treatments, control and trim+debris. Measurements were made in three 5 x 5 m subplots within 20 x 20 m plots nested in the 30 x 30 m treatment areas. Anion and cation resin membranes were inserted into the fermentation layer at the litter-soil interface and retrieved after one week. The measurement intervals were 2-4 weeks before canopy trimming, 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 and 4-5 weeks after trimming. Nutrient mineralization differed significantly between control and trim+detritus. Total N and P fluxes occurred at 4-5 weeks after canopy trimming. Litter decomposition depends primarily on the interaction among climate, litter quality and biota, so consequently any change in habitat will result in changes in these factors. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of hurricane driven changes to forests on green litter decomposition, invertebrate communities and nutrient mineralization. This study used three complete replicated blocks with two canopy treatments, control and trim+debris. Measurements were made in three 5 x 5 m subplots within 20 x 20 m plots nested in the 30 x 30 m treatment areas. Green leaves were enclosed in litterbags of three different mesh sizes in each subplot. Litterbags were retrieved after 21, 35, 84 and 168 days; decomposer fauna was extracted and identified, mineralized nutrients were measured using ion resin membranes, and weight loss was determined. Growth, nutrient uptake, blood metabolites and bone properties in broilers consuming feed with mineral-enriched whole black soldier fly larvae
<p>Recycling critical minerals like phosphorus is essential for future circular agriculture. This study explored adding mineral-enriched black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), grown on substrates with sewage sludge recyclates (SSR), to broiler feed to reintroduce minerals from restricted waste streams into the nutrient cycle. Results showed that including 15% mineral-enriched BSFL in broiler diets for 42 days had no adverse effects on growth, nutrient intake, or bone condition, and maintained acceptable levels of heavy metals.</p>
Cover crop application on dredged sediments increases corn yield through microorganism-associated enzyme-driven nutrient mineralization.
Common strategies to mitigate soil degradation of agricultural soils include cover crop application and soil amendment addition. Applying dredged sediments as a soil amendment is gaining popularity since they often provide benefits other amendments lack; however, their use with a cover crop is largely unexplored. To understand how cover crop use changes the restorative properties of dredged sediments, we assessed soil physical and chemical properties, enzymatic activities, and corn yield for plots of dredged sediments with and without a cover crop. Cover crop application on dredged sediments increased corn yields by ~24% when compared to dredged sediments alone. Increases in corn yield were driven by changes in nutrient mineralization, specifically within the nitrogen cycle. The physical and chemical properties of dredged sediments remained unchanged regardless of cover crop application. Our results suggest that when cover crops are applied to dredged sediments, crop yield increased through microorganism-driven nutrient mineralization. However, the physical and chemical environment remained optimal for corn growth within dredged sediments, regardless of cover crop application. This research is a vital step into understanding the use of dredged sediments in agricultural soil systems.

Food composition database for nutrient intake: selected vitamins and minerals in selected European countries
<p>Following a request from the European Commission for a review of European dietary reference values (DRVs), the EFSA’s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) has prepared a number of Scientific Opinions on DRVs for micronutrients. The DATA Unit supported this activity by estimating the nutrient intake of a number of micronutrients in nine selected European countries and different age groups. In addition, the DATA Unit also provided information on average content of food sources of the respective nutrients per country based on the composition database, as well as main food group contributors to nutrient intakes and assessed the comparability of the provided data with pertinent published intake data.</p> <p>Intake estimates have been assessed using food consumption data from the EFSA Comprehensive Food Consumption Database (EFSA, 2011a) and the EFSA Nutrient composition database. Food composition data used to populate the Nutrient composition database were provided to EFSA through the EFSA procurement project ‘<em>Updated food composition database for nutrient intake’</em> (Roe at al., 2013). Data were provided following the EFSA specification for standard sample description for food and feed and were classified according to the FoodEx2 classification system of EFSA (EFSA, 2011b).</p> <p>The food composition data used in these assessments and here published cover the following vitamins and minerals: calcium (Ca); copper (Cu); cobalamin (vitamin B12); magnesium (Mg); niacin; phosphorus (P); potassium (K); riboflavin; thiamin; iron (Fe); selenium (Se); vitamin B6; vitamin K, zinc (Zn), and vitamin E<sup>1</sup>. The food composition dataset contains data from seven<sup>2</sup> countries: Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, and United Kingdom. <p>Exploring alternative fertilizers is crucial in agriculture due to the cost and environmental impact of inorganic options. This study investigated the potential of biofertilizers derived from sewage treatment on the growth and physiology of <em>Amaranthus cruentus</em> plants. Various treatments were compared, including control treatments with inorganic fertilizer and treatments with biofertilizers composed of microalgae, biosolids and reclaimed water. The following traits were investigated: photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, growth, and leaf nutrient concentrations. Results show that the concentrations of N, P, Cu, Fe Zn and Na nutrients, in the dry microalgae and biosolids, were quite high for the needs of the plants. The wet microalgae presented high concentration of Cu, Fe and Zn nutrients while reclaimed water contained high concentration of N, K, Ca and S. Na and Zn nutrients increased in the leaf of plants treated with dry microalgae and biosolid, respectively. At the beginning of the flowering phase, total chlorophyll and carotenoids contents were lower for plants grown with wet microalgae while for plants grown with higher doses of biosolid or reclaimed water total chlorophyll was increased, and carotenoids were not affected. Lower photosynthetic pigments under wet microalgae resulted in lower photosynthetic rates. On the other hand, amendments with dry microalgae and biosolid increased photosynthetic rates with the biosolid being the most effective. Higher applications of biosolid, wet and dry microalgae produced a considerable increase in shoot biomass of amaranth, with the dry microalgae being the most effective. Additionally, reclaimed water obtained after tertiary treatment of sewage with microalgae and biosolids applied alone showed promising effects on plant growth. Overall, these findings suggest that organic fertilizers derived from sewage treatment have the potential to enhance plant growth and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.</p>
