Dataset of "Key Aspects in Designing High-Throughput Workflows in Electrocatalysis Research: A Case Study on IrCo Mixed-Metal Oxidese"
<p>With the growing interest of the electrochemical community in high-throughput (HT) experimentation as a powerful tool in accelerating materials discovery, the implementation of HT methodologies and the design of HT workflows has gained traction. We identify 6 aspects essential to HT workflow design in electrochemistry and beyond to ease the incorporation of HT methods in the community’s research and to assist in their improvement. We study IrCo mixed-metal oxides (MMOs) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media using the mentioned aspects to provide a practical example of possible workflow design pitfalls and strategies to counteract them. </p>
"I'm something of an untrained, unofficial cultural anthropologist myself. Ihave a business interviewing people to capture their personal histories. I'm always interested how people fit into their world and how they affect their world. I'm a graphic designer who works in the same building as the printing presses that I recorded. Iwalk past the presses every day on my way to talk to the folks in the prepress department. I'm on friendly but not drinking terms with the pressmen. I'm a friend with the prepress manager. Three Heidelberg presses are installed side by side in an open warehouse-like room. The presses are about twenty feet long and about five feet high. With their series of four humps or mounds where each printing cylinder is located, the presses remind one of giant, gray, mechanical caterpillars. Each press has a cyan cylinder, a magenta cylinder, a yellow cylinder and a black cylinder – so the humps are brightly colored. The presses are well lit by banks of fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling over each press. When you walk into the press room you hear the sound of rock music blaring from a boom box radio mixed with the general din of the presses. It is only when you walk up to a press like Idid for the recordings that you really start to hear the individual strains of clicking, clacking and mechanical, syncopated chattering. When I made my recordings I was intrigued by the subtle variations in the sounds produced by these machines that aren't apparent when you first walk through the door. The pressmen were kind enough to allow me to walk right up to the presses and poke my microphone quite close to the rotating press cylinders. Iuse a Danish Pro Audio microphone about the size of a pencil eraser. An extremely sensitive mic with the capacity for capturing loud sounds such as the presses up close. Rotating the mic to one side or the other focused on the unique sounds coming from one cylinder or the other." [Kevin/KMerrell]18 in Collecting Sounds. Seed mix design and floral resources drive multi-trophic interactions in prairie restoration
<ol> <li>Ecological restoration often targets plant community recovery, but restoration success may depend on the recovery of a complex web of biotic interactions to maintain biodiversity and promote ecosystem services. Specifically, management that drives resource availability, such as seeding richness and provenance, may alter species interactions across multiple trophic levels. Using experimentally seeded prairies, we examine three key groups – plants, pollinators, and goldenrod crab spiders (<em>Misumena vatia</em>, predators of pollinators) – to understand the effects of species richness and admixture seed sourcing of restoration seed mixtures on multi-trophic interactions.</li> <li>Working with prairie plants, we experimentally manipulated seed mix richness and the number of seed source regions (single-source region or admixture seed sourcing). In each experimental prairie, we surveyed floral abundance and richness, pollinator visitation, and plant-<em>M. vatia</em> interactions.</li> <li>A high-richness seed mix increased floral abundance when seeds were sourced from a single geographic region, and floral abundance strongly increased pollinator visitation, <em>M. vatia</em> abundance, and prey capture. Seeding richness and admixture seed sourcing of the seed mixture did not affect floral species richness, but floral species richness increased pollinator visitation.</li> <li>Pollinators interacted with different floral communities across seeding treatments, indicating a shift in visited floral species with restoration practices.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Long-term success in prairie restoration requires the restoration of plant-arthropod interactions. We provide evidence that seed mix richness and admixture seed sourcing affect arthropod floral associations, but effective restoration of plant-arthropod interactions should consider total floral resource availability. Incorporating a food web perspective in restoration will strengthen approaches to whole ecosystem restoration.</li> </ol>
Perception of Mixed-Reality Shopping Assistant System to develop Design Principles : Interview Transcripts (MRDP)
<p>The dataset is a collection of transcripts where 35 participants were interviewed to collect users’’ feedback and perceptions about the mixed-reality MR shopping assistant system. The interviews were a part of the research where a personal shopping assistance system based on optical see-through mixed-reality (MR ) technology was designed. Microsoft HoloLens 2 was leveraged as the archetype to realize this novel system to facilitating consumer information search and decision making. The design incorporated various shopping assistance elements (i.e., product information, reviews, recommendations, product availability, videos, a virtual cart, and an option to buy). Users can interact with these elements with gesture-based inputs to navigate through the interface.</p> <p>Derived from the qualitative feedback from the 35 participants, we proposed six design principles that aim to support future designs and developments of mixed-reality MR shopping applications for head-mounted displays in omnichannel retail: Rigor, Informativeness, Tangibility, Summary, Comparability and Holism. </p> <p> </p>

Data from: Superiority of extra-pair offspring: maternal but not genetic effects as revealed by a mixed cross-fostering design
Extra-pair copulations (EPC) are a rule rather than an exception in socially monogamous birds. Despite widespread occurrences, the benefits of female infidelity remain illusive. Most attention has been paid to the possibility that females gain genetic benefits from EPC. Fitness comparison between maternal half-siblings is considered to be a defining test of this hypothesis. Recently it was shown that these comparisons may be confounded by within-brood maternal effects. One such effect may be the distribution of half-siblings in the laying order. This possibility is difficult to study since it would be necessary to detect from which egg the chick hatched. Here we used a new approach for egg-chick assignment. We cross-fostered eggs on an individual basis among a set of nests of the collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis. After hatching, chicks were ascribed to mothers and therefore to individual eggs by molecular-genetic methods. Extra-pair young predominated early in the laying order. Under natural conditions, this should give them a competitive advantage over their half-siblings mediated by hatching asynchrony. However, we experimentally synchronized hatching. After this treatment extra-pair young did not outperform within-pair young in any studied trait including survival up to recruitment and several indicators of reproductive success and attractiveness. We obtained only modest sample size for the last two traits and did not test for extra-pair success of male offspring. Thus we cannot exclude the possibility of slight advantages of EPY during their adult phase of life. However, our data tentatively suggest that more likely reason for females' EPCs is the insurance against the infertility of a social mate.
