Extract from BluePrint sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest"
<p>This audio piece is a 3 minute extract of the sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest" (17 minutes in total) co-created by artist Sara Walmsley and the participants of the BluePrint project. This poetic reflection, which includes sonification of historic and predicted rainfall data*, draws on the lived experience of two communities who, in having to deal with the realities of flooding, are already learning to live with the impacts of climate change. </p> <p> Developed over 8 months (March to October 2024) of collaborative creative workshops and individual ethnographic interviews, this piece weaves together the voices and sounds that tell the stories of two devastating flood events that affected the people and places of Eglinton and Newtownstewart in 2017 and 2022. </p> <p>Within this extract of the sound installation you will hear the melodic, polyphonic harmonies of St. Eugene’s Church choir as they give music to the words of members of their community whose homes were destroyed and lives endangered by flood water. A play, performed by the Visible, Invisible and Self, takes us on a narrative journey through a community which saw their joyful totems of leisure and togetherness tumbled and sodden by a beloved natural element turned wild. A poem, written and performed by those who witnessed the rolling in of a sudden and unexpected storm, represents the voices of the key actors in a devastating event - the flooding victims, the community responders, and the river itself. Finally, we hear throughout the voices of those striving to adapt to our changing climate, those who are responding to the urgency by finding solace, hope, strength and courage in the unending and unsurprising resilience and creativity of our communities.</p> <p>Listeners are invited to remember that as they sit and experience this sound piece, that this is not a piece of art born from an imagined, dystopian future. The events described and represented all happened to real people and real places. As our climate changes at a rapidly accelerating rate, the island of Ireland is particularly vulnerable to an increased frequency of devastating flood events. While this project and this piece of art have aimed to highlight and celebrate the shining threads of hope, inspiration and creativity our communities have shown in meeting the challenges posed by climate change, a note of alarm and urgency has also been sounded. Social partners and temperature jointly affect morning foraging activity of small birds in winter
Daily foraging activity of small wintering birds is classically thought to be driven by the need to gather enough energy reserves to survive each night. A separate line of research has shown that sociality is a major driver in winter foraging activities in many species. Here, we use wintering birds as a study system to move towards an integrative understanding of the influence of energy requirements and sociality on foraging ecology. We used RFID-enabled feeders in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA in January-March 2019 to measure foraging activity in two species (downy woodpecker, <i>Picoides pubescens</i>, and white-breasted nuthatches, <i>Sitta carolinensis</i>). We analyzed the relationship between overnight temperature and morning foraging activity and found that lowest overnight temperature was negatively correlated with morning visitation at feeders. We then used a network approach to ask if flock associations explain similarity in birds' foraging activity. In both species, individuals with stronger associations in a social network were more likely to share similar feeder activity, and an index of social partners' activity explained foraging activity better than overnight temperature. This brings forth new questions about the interplay between individual response to temperature and social factors in shaping how small animals cope with harsh winter conditions.
Pharmacodynamics parameters underlying the manuscript: The effect of morning versus evening administration of empagliflozin on its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics characteristics in healthy adults: a two-way crossover, non-randomised trial
<p><b>Background</b>: Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor approved for use in patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (DMT2) with- or without other cardiovascular disease. Empagliflozin is taken once daily without rationale on the optimal timing for administration. This study aimed<b> </b>to determine the chronopharmacological effects of morning vs evening administration of empagliflozin 10 mg in Healthy Egyptian adults, by investigating the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics parameters of empagliflozin depending on the intake time. </p> <p><b>Methods: </b>An open label, sequential, two‐way crossover trial comprised two periods with a washout period of 7 days. Pharmacokinetics parameters (t<sub>max</sub> (h), C<sub>max</sub> (ng/ml), AUC <sub>0-t</sub> (ng.h/ml)) as primary endpoints, and (AUC <sub>0 to ∞</sub>(ng.h/ml)) as secondary endpoint were assessed. Method validation was done prior to injection in LC/MS/MS and samples were processed by Liquid-Liquid extraction. The pharmacodynamic profile (UGE <sub>0-24</sub>) was determined after method validation (glucose hexokinase method).</p> <p><b>Results: </b>T<sub>max</sub> increased by (35%) in the evening phase compared to the morning phase, while C<sub>max</sub> decreased by (-6.5%)in the evening dose compared to the morning dose. Besides, AUC<sub>0 to ∞</sub> increased in the evening phase by (8.25%) compared to the morning phase. The mean cumulative amount of glucose excreted; UGE (<sub>0-24</sub>) increased by (43%) in the evening dose compared to the morning dose</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Despite there was a significant difference between morning and evening doses, it didn't reach the significant level, thus, it can be concluded that there is no difference between the morning and evening doses.</p>
Data from: Experience counts: the role of female age in morning incubation and brooding behavior in relation to temperature
<p>Reproductive experience can impact how individuals allocate time and energy to reproduction and generate differences in reproductive behavior that leads to experience dependent variation in reproductive success. In order to understand if individual variation in parental behavior is related to environmental temperature and breeding experience, we observed the timing and duration of the first morning off bout in a wild, open cup nesting passerine bird during the incubation and early nestling period. We compared incubation behaviors and nest temperature of inexperienced (second year = first breeding season) and experienced (after second year) female hooded warblers <i>Setophaga citrina</i>. Females left the nest earlier on colder mornings suggesting an energetic constraint due to the long overnight on bout during colder temperatures. During incubation, females increased the duration of the first morning off bout with increasing temperature. Similarly, during the early nestling period, experienced females had shorter off bout duration on colder mornings and increased duration with warmer temperatures. In contrast, inexperienced females increased off bout duration with colder morning temperatures. Experienced females maintained higher nest temperatures and higher minimum nest temperatures compared to inexperienced females. We also found evidence that experienced females nested in microhabitats with higher minimum morning temperature which may buffer older females from colder daily extremes and enable older females to maintain higher nest temperatures. While we found no relationship between incubation and brooding behaviors and fledging success, the proportion of the clutch that hatched was positively related to minimum nest temperature. The ability of experienced females to maintain higher minimum nest temperatures and to adjust brooding behaviors during colder mornings is a potential mechanism that has consequences for nestling condition in a wild population. Our results highlight the need to examine experience related parental care behaviors in responding to environmental variation.</p>

Data from: Gene flow, divergent selection and resistance to introgression in two species of morning glories (Ipomoea)
Gene flow is thought to impede genetic divergence and speciation by homogenizing genomes. Recent theory and research suggests that strong enough divergent selection can overpower gene flow, leading to islands of divergence. However, there are alternative explanations for these patterns. Independent evidence that islands of divergence are due to divergent selection would allow these explanations to be distinguished, but such evidence is scarce. Here we present multiple lines of evidence that islands of divergence in a pair of sister morning glory species, Ipomoea cordatotriloba and I. lacunosa, are the outcome of divergent selection in the face of gene flow. We analyzed a SNP dataset across the genome to assess the amount of gene flow, resistance to introgression, and patterns of selection on genes resistant to introgression. We show that differentiation between the two species is much lower in sympatry than in allopatry, consistent with gene flow between the species in sympatry. In addition, highly differentiated SNPs were subject to divergent selection. Finally, despite gene flow in sympatry, SNPs that are highly differentiated in allopatry are resistant to homogenization in sympatry. Our investigation reveals the complex interplay between selection and gene flow that can occur during the early stages of speciation.
Data for: Complex cross incompatibility in morning glories is consistent with a role for mating system in plant speciation
<p><span>Reproductive isolation between selfing and outcrossing species can arise through diverse mechanisms, some of which are directly associated with differences in mating system. We dissected cross incompatibility between the highly selfing morning glory <em>Ipomoea</em> <em>lacunosa</em> and its mixed-mating sister species <em>I. cordatotriloba</em>. We found that cross incompatibility is complex, with contributions acting both before and after fertilization. We then investigated whether the transition in mating system may have facilitated the evolution of these reproductive barrier components through mismatched floral morphology, differences in reproductive context, or both. We found evidence that morphological mismatch likely contributes to reproductive isolation in at least one cross direction and that other pollen-pistil interactions are present. We also identified hybrid seed inviability consistent with the predictions of the weak-inbreeder, strong-outbreeder hypotheses, suggesting endosperm misregulation plays an important role in cross incompatibility. In contrast, we did not find evidence consistent with the pre-zygotic weak-inbreeder, strong-outbreeder hypothesis. Our study highlights the complexity of reproductive isolation between outcrossing and selfing species and the extent to which evolutionary consequences of mating system transitions can facilitate speciation.</span></p>
