Dynamics of Old-Growth Forests on Wachusett Mountain in Princeton MA 1996-1997

One of the largest old-growth forests in southern New England was recently "discovered" on the exposed upper slopes of Wachusett Mountain, one of the most heavily used recreational areas in Massachusetts, less than 50 miles from urban Boston. Presettlement and early post-settlement data suggest that most of the area's forests were comprised of a mixture of Quercus rubra and northern hardwood species. Individual species abundances and recruitment dynamics in the four stands exhibit highly variable spatial and temporal patterns across sites that differ in aspect and exposure. Three uneven-aged hardwood stands contain Quercus rubra in the largest size classes, various amounts of Fagus grandifolia, Acer and Betula species in the middle size classes and dense thickets of Acer pennsylvanicum, Acer spicatum, and Hamamelis virginiana in the small size classes. Several individuals of Q. rubra, B. lenta, and B. alleghaniensis are at or very near the maximum longevity known for these species. Of particular significance is the presence of Q. rubra exceeding 250 - 300 years of age. A Tsuga canadensis stand contains unimodal size and age distributions, with trees less than 60-cm dbh and 100 to 300 years old. Widespread Quercus rubra recruitment occurred on all sites from the 1600s through the early 1800s, when it dropped precipitously except for scattered individuals on more open talus sites, and was replaced by either Tsuga or Acer and Betula species. The historical change in recruitment from Quercus to more shade-tolerant species evidently was driven by a change in disturbance regime from an early period when fire was a major factor controlling forest dynamics to a period over the last two centuries when hurricanes (1815 and 1938), frequent wind, ice, and snow damage, but no fire, are documented. Northern red oak regeneration in burned and unburned stands in the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, USA, 2023-2024

This project aimed to determine whether prescribed burning of managed forest stands improves the regeneration of Quercus rubra near its northern range limit in New Hampshire. We measured oak seedling density and growth rates in three pairs of managed stands in which one had received a prescribed burn since 2017. We also measured the density of competing seedlings and shrubs, leaf area index above seedling height, soil nutrients, mycorrhizal colonization, foliar carbon/nitrogen ratio, and stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon. We found greater oak seedling density and faster oak seedling growth rates in burned stands relative to unburned stands. A subset of these measurements were also collected in additional burned and unburned study stands in the region. A companion mesocosm experiment showed faster growth in oak seedlings grown in soil from burned vs. unburned stands. Together these studies show that the benefits of fire to oak regeneration are mediated both via greater light availability as well as effects mediated via soil.

This data set includes counts of the number of adult birds (males and females) per 10 ha at HBEF (1969 - present) and on three additional plots within the White Mountain National Forest (1986 - 2000). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Loma Mountains National Park Forest Aboveground Biomass Plots

<p>This dataset is part of my MSc Thesis:&nbsp;<em>Carbon loss hotspots in Loma Mountains National Park:&nbsp;Spatio-temporal carbon loss due to deforestation in Sierra Leone</em></p> <p>Based on a random sampling&nbsp;at the edges of the park, 14 transects, consisting of 3-4 plots were measured. Within each plot, tree height and diameter at breast height was measured, which could then be used to calculate the aboveground biomass. The diameter and length of dead wood pieces was also measured. An attempt was made to identify tree species present in the plots, by matching the local names provided by our field guides to a database of Sierra Leone&#39;s trees, which includes vernacular names.&nbsp;</p> <p>A full description of the methods and context of this data can be found in my MSc Thesis.</p>

Long-term (1962-2019) tree demography on permanent plots in old-growth northern hardwood forests of the Huron Mountains, Marquette Co., Michigan.

This package contains tree demographic data from multiple remeasurements of several sets of permanent study plots in old-growth hemlock-northern hardwood forests in northern Marquette Co., Michigan. Plots were established from 1962-2001, with five to nine censuses over the study period. Plots are distributed over a large and diverse area of old-growth forests protected since ca. 1880, with no commercial management and active management limited to maintenance of trails and tracks. Most plots have not experienced stand-originating disturbances for at least 400 years (based on increment cores); three plots are in stands originating following a fire ca. 1830 ("Bourdo plots" 7094-7096). Forests are dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis); secondary species include yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), basswood (Tilia americana), and hop-hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). Soils are variable, ranging from deep sandy outwash to thin layers of rocky till over bedrock. Mortality and diameter growth of all trees were recorded at each remeasurement. Protocols for measurement and stem-mapping are described in Methods. Several publications use some of the data included in this package -- see 'journal citations'. (identified as Kalkaska series) are developed on deep sandy glacial outwash. The plot is within a much larger region of old-growth forest, protected since ca. 1880, with only minimal disturbance associated with access tracks and trails. Numerous other forest community and dendrochronological studies support the interpretation that the area around the study plot has not experienced stand-initiating disturbance for at least 400 years. Initial mapping and measurements (1993-1995 for 2.52 ha; an additional 0.2 ha added in 1999) used a 20x20 m grid established in a near-level area of uniform substrate. Permanent plot data for old-growth white pine - hemlock - hardwood forests in the Huron Mountains, Marquette County, Michigan: 2006-2022

This study was initiated by Dr. Dennis A. Riege with a focus on the role of white pine (Pinus strobus) in old-growth mixed white pine-hemlock-northern hardwood forests. Study areas within the lands of the Huron Mt. Club were selected for prominent presence of canopy white pine. Several permanent study plots, totaling about 3.3 ha, were established, with all trees >5 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) identified, mapped and measured. Initiatl establishment was from 2006-2008. All plots were remeasured in 2011, 2016 and 2021-22. Mortality and new recruits were documented in remeasurements. Reference coordinates for each plot are included in 'Methods'. Data tables in this package include all of these measurements. Additional information, including maps of downed logs, is included in material included under 'other entities'.

Biomass accumulation in trees and downed wood at Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, the Bowl Natural Research Area, and the White Mountain National Forest, NH, USA

Standing trees and downed wood were inventoried in all of the chronosequence stands in the White Mountains, New Hampshire to characterize biomass. Live and standing dead trees were inventoried in the chronosequence stands in 1994, 2004, 2012, and 2021. Coarse (≥ 7.6 cm diameter) and fine woody debris (3.0 – 7.6 cm) were inventoried at the same stands in 2004 and 2020. Twigs (FWD < 3.0 cm) were inventoried in 2004 and 2020. The Bowl and Mt. Pond old-growth sites were inventoried (standing trees and downed wood) in 2021.

Nutrient and microbial characteristics of mountain stream fine benthic organic matter in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, 1995 to 1996

Numerous studies have examined qualitative shifts in leaf litter composition in the early to middle stages of decomposition. (Suberkropp, Godshalk and Klug 1976, Petersen and Cummins 1974, Findlay and Arsuffi 1989) which have shown that changes in leaf species and composition lead to marked differences in microbial processing rates (Suberkropp and Klug 1976) and that leaf and woody debris decomposition rates are related to both litter C:N and extracellular enzyme activities (Taylor et al. 1989, Sinsabaugh et al. 1992, Sinsabaugh and Linkins 1993). Since most organic matter moves through streams as fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) (Sinsabaugh et al. 1992) it is a potentially important link between terrestrial and aquatic environments. Although there is increasing interest in understanding FPOM dynamics, there have been few studies of factors influencing stream sediment FBOM chemical or microbial characteristics.

White Mountain National Forest Boundary: GIS Shapefile

This dataset contains the White Mountain National Forest Boundary. The boundary was extracted from the National Forest boundaries coverage for the lower 48 states, including Puerto Rico developed by the USDA Forest Service - Geospatial Service and Technology Center. The coverage was projected from decimal degrees to UTM zone 19. This dataset includes administrative unit boundaries, derived primarily from the GSTC SOC data system, comprised of Cartographic Feature Files (CFFs), using ESRI Spatial Data Engine (SDE) and an Oracle database. The data that was available in SOC was extracted on November 10, 1999. Some of the data that had been entered into SOC was outdated, and some national forest boundaries had never been entered for a variety of reasons. The USDA Forest Service, Geospatial Service and Technology Center has edited this data in places where it was questionable or missing, to match the National Forest Inventoried Roadless Area data submitted for the President's Roadless Area Initiative. Data distributed as shapefile in Coordinate system EPSG:26919 - NAD83 / UTM zone 19N.

Calling activity of Birds in the White Mountain National Forest: Audio Recordings (2016 and 2018)

We collected 410 10-minute sound recordings of birds in and near the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Recordings, which encompassed most of the bird breeding season in each of two years, included 130,776 vocalizations from 46 taxa. In the associated publication, we report species lists, rarefaction curves, and vocalization descriptions. We also provide analyses of habitat associations, phenology, and spatial patterning in vocalization activity. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Calling activity of Birds in the White Mountain National Forest: Manifest of 99,778 acoustic recordings from bird plots in the Hubbard Brook Forest: 2016 - 2023

During 2016 - 2023, during the bird breeding season, we collected 99,778 files of bioacoustic recordings in and near the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Here, we provide a manifest of the sound files. Most files are one-hour recordings collected at 32 kHz and saved in FLAC format (~ 25 MB per file, ~ 13 TB total). Typical recording configuration was 05:00 - 08:00 and 17:30 - 20:30 local time. The full sound files have been saved in three respositories: two copies at Dartmouth College (Ayres lab) and one copy at the Macauley Library, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. The full sound files are available upon request. The file attributes within the manifest include date, start time, and recorder group: e.g., Main, 10ha, Oven, VW, AshBirch, and Ridge. Each recorder group had 5 - 20 recorders at plots separated by >100 m. Coordinates of each recorder are associated with plot names within metadata. The bird species expected to occur in these recordings are those from Holmes et al. (2021). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).
