Predator selection on multicomponent warning signals in an aposematic moth

Aposematic prey advertise their unprofitability with conspicuous warning signals that are often composed of multiple color patterns. Many species show intraspecific variation in these patterns even though selection is expected to favor invariable warning signals that enhance predator learning. However, if predators acquire avoidance to specific signal components, this might relax selection on other aposematic traits and explain variability. Here we investigated this idea in the aposematic moth Amata nigriceps that has conspicuous black and orange coloration. The size of the orange spots in the wings is highly variable between individuals, whereas the number and width of orange abdominal stripes remain consistent. We produced artificial moths that varied in the proportion of orange in the wings or the presence of abdominal stripes. We presented these to a natural avian predator, the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), and recorded how different warning signal components influenced their attack decisions. When moth models had orange stripes on the abdomen, birds did not discriminate between different wing signals. However, when the stripes on the abdomen were removed, birds chose the model with smaller wing spots. In addition, we found that birds were more likely to attack moths with a smaller number of abdominal stripes. Together, our results suggest that bird predators primarily pay attention to the abdominal stripes of A. nigriceps, and this could relax selection on wing coloration. Our study highlights the importance of considering individual warning signal components if we are to understand how predation shapes selection on prey warning coloration.

This dataset contains the figures, as well as the necessary plotting scripts and data to reproduce them, for the article "A fast, low-cost, and stable memory algorithm for implementing multicomponent transport in direct numerical simulations" by Aaron J. Fillo, Jason Schlup, Guillaume Beardsell, Guillaume Blanquart, and Kyle E. Niemeyer (2019). In addition, the code used to generate the eigenvalues in Table 1 is included.

The scripts were run in Matlab 2019a, though none of the versions used should be version-dependent. Furthermore, non-standard functions are included with dependencies hard-coded. We used export_fig (https://github.com/altmany/export_fig) to generate high-quality figures, and redistribute the version used here for reproducibility (export_fig was developed by Oliver J. Woodford and Yair M. Altman, and made available openly under the BSD 3-Clause License).

The code included in this dataset is released under the BSD 3-Clause License (see LICENSE.txt for details), other than the source of export_fig, as described. Data from: Cu-Al mixed oxide-catalysed multicomponent synthesis of gluco- and allofuranose-linked 1,2,3-triazole derivatives

A series of carbohydrate linked-1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthetized in good yields from glucofuranose and allofuranose diacetonides using as key step a three-component 1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition catalyzed by a Cu-Al mixed oxide. In this multicomponent reaction, Cu-Al mixed oxide/sodium ascorbate system serves as highly reactive, recyclable and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for regioselective synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles. The reported protocol has significant advantages over classical CuI/DIPEA or CuSO4/sodium ascorbate conditions in terms of efficiency and reduced synthetic complexity. In addition, the selective deprotection of synthesized di-O-isopropylidene derivatives was also carried out leading to the corresponding mono-O-isopropylidene products in moderate yields. Some of the synthesized triazole glycoconjugates were tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), as well as fungus (Aspergillus niger) and yeast (Candida utilis). The results revealed that these compounds exhibit moderate to good antimicrobial activity mainly against Gram-negative bacteria.

Woodpecker drum evolution: an analysis of covariation in elements of a multicomponent acoustic display among and within species

Multicomponent signals are found throughout the animal kingdom, but how these elaborate displays evolve and diversify is still unclear. Here, we explore the evolution of the woodpecker drum display. Two components of this territorial, sexually selected signal, drum speed and drum length, are used by territory holders to assess the threat level of an intruding drummer. We explore the coevolution of these display components both among and within species. Among species, we find evidence for strong coevolution of drum speed and length. Within species, we find that drum speed and length vary largely independent of each other. However, in some species, there is evidence of covariation in certain portions of the drum length distribution. The observed differences in component covariation at the macro- and microevolutionary scales highlights the importance of studying signal structure both among and within species. In all cases of covariation at both evolutionary scales, the relationship between drum speed and length is positive, indicating mutual elaboration of display components, and not a performance trade-off.
