Background music and cognitive task performance: systematic review dataset

<p>This repository contains the raw data used for a systematic review of the impact of background music on cognitive task performance (Cheah et al., 2022). Our intention is to facilitate future updates to this work.</p><p><strong>Contents description</strong></p><p>This repository contains eight Microsoft Excel files, each containing the synthesised data pertaining to each of the six cognitive domains analysed in the review, as well as task difficulty, and population characteristics:</p><ul><li><i>raw-data-attention</i></li><li><i>raw-data-inhibition</i></li><li><i>raw-data-language</i></li><li><i>raw-data-memory</i></li><li><i>raw-data-thinking</i></li><li><i>raw-data-processing-speed</i></li><li><i>raw-data-task-difficulty</i></li><li><i>raw-data--population</i></li></ul><p><strong>Files description</strong></p><p><i>Tabs organisation</i></p><p>The files pertaining to each cognitive domain include individual tabs for each cognitive task analysed (c.f. Figure 2 in the original paper for the list of cognitive tasks). The file with the population characteristics data also contains separate tabs for each characteristic (extraversion, music training, gender, and working memory capacity).</p><p><i>Tabs contents</i></p><p>In all files and tabs, each row corresponds to the data of a test. The same article can have more than one row if it reports multiple tests. For instance, the study by Cassidy and MacDonald (2007; cf. <i>Memory.xlsx</i>, tab: <i>Memory-all</i>) contains two experiments (immediate and delayed free recall) each with multiple test (immediate free recall: tests 25 – 32; delayed free recall: tests 58 – 61). Each test (one per row), in this experiment, pertains to comparisons between conditions where the background music has different levels of arousal, between groups of participants with different extraversion levels, between different tasks material (words or paragraphs) and different combinations of the previous (e.g., high arousing music vs silence test among extraverts whilst completing an immediate free recall task involving paragraphs; cf. test 30).</p><p>The columns are organised as follows:</p><ul><li>"TESTS": the index of the test in a particular tab (for easy reference);</li><li>"ID": abbreviation of the cognitive tasks involved in a specific experiment (see glossary for meaning);</li><li>"REFERENCE": the article where the data was taken from (see main publications for list of articles);</li><li>"CONDITIONS": an abbreviated description of the music condition of a given test;</li><li>"MEANS (music)": the average performance across all participants in a given experiment with background music;</li><li>"MEANS (silence)": the average performance across all participants in a given experiment without background music.</li></ul><p>Then, in horizontal arrangement, we also include groups of two columns that breakdown specific comparisons related to each test (i.e., all tests comparing the same two types of condition, e.g., L-BgM vs I-BgM, will appear under the same set of columns). For each one, we indicate mean difference between the respective conditions ("MD" column) and the direction of effect ("Standard Metric" column). Effects of personalized music listening on post-stroke cognitive impairment: A randomized controlled trial

<p><strong><span>Background and purpose:</span></strong><span> Previous studies have suggested that music listening has the potential to positively affect mood and cognitive functions in individuals with <a name="_Hlk140153246"></a>post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), with a preference for self-selected music likely to yield better outcomes. However, there is insufficient clinical evidence to suggest the use of music listening in routine rehabilitation care to treat PSCI. This randomized control trial (RCT) aims to investigate the effects of personalized music listening on mood improvement, <a name="_Hlk140153263"></a>activities of daily living (ADLs), and cognitive functions in individuals with PSCI.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Materials and methods:</span></strong><span> A total of 34 patients with PSCI were randomly assigned to either the music group or the control group. Patients in the music group underwent a three-month personalized music-listening intervention. The intervention involved listening to a personalized playlist tailored to each individual's cultural, ethnic, and social background, life experiences, and personal music preferences. In contrast, the control group patients listened to white noise as a placebo. Cognitive function, neurological function, mood, and ADLs were assessed. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><strong><span> </span></strong><span>After three months of treatment, the music group showed significantly higher <a name="_Hlk140153278"></a>Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores compared to the control group (<em>p=</em>0.027), particularly in the domains of delayed memory (<em>p=</em>0.019) and orientation (<em>p=</em>0.023). Moreover, the music group demonstrated significantly better scores in <a name="_Hlk140153297"></a>National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (<em>p=</em>0.008), <a name="_Hlk140153304"></a>Barthel Index (BI) (<em>p=</em>0.019), and <a name="_Hlk140153315"></a>Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI) (<em>p=</em>0.008) compared to the control group. No effects were found on mood as measured by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAMA) and the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD).</span></p>

Tapping to hip-hop: Effects of cognitive load, arousal, and musical meter on time experiences

<p>(Abstract) Experiences of time vary intra- and interindividually, depending on factors&nbsp;such as attentional resource allocation and arousal. Music as a temporal art that&nbsp;is structured by multiple temporal layers is ideal for investigating human time&nbsp;experiences. The current study used examples of hip-hop music that varied in&nbsp;arousal but were constant in tempo. Participants judged the passage of time to&nbsp;be quicker when cognitive load was high in a dual-task condition, and&nbsp;perceived duration to be shorter when performing a concurrent motor task&nbsp;(tapping along with the music). Perceived musical arousal did not affect&nbsp;subjective time. Attending to a higher metrical level by tapping with half notes&nbsp;resulted in shorter duration estimates and a quicker passage of time, compared&nbsp;to tapping with eighth notes of the same music. Results were not influenced by&nbsp;spontaneous motor tempo, musical expertise, preference or familiarity with the&nbsp;music. Taken together, these findings indicate consistent effects of cognitive&nbsp;load and attention to meter on time experiences.</p>

An integrative cognitive rehabilitation using neurologic music therapy in multiple sclerosis

<p>Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease, affecting both the sensorimotor and cognitive systems. The typical pattern of cognitive impairment includes reduced speed of information processing, decreased phonological and semantic speech fluency, deficits in verbal and visual episodic memory, as well as attention and executive dysfunctions. We aimed to investigate the influence of the neurologic music therapy (NMT) on mood, motivation, emotion status, and cognitive functions in patients with MS.</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>Thirty patients with MS were randomly divided in 2 groups: the control group (CG) undergoing conventional cognitive rehabilitation (CCR), 6 times a week for 8 weeks, and the experimental group (EG) undergoing CCR 3 times a week for 8 weeks plus NMT techniques, performed 3 times a week for 8 weeks. All the participants were submitted to the same amount of treatment. Each patient was evaluated before (baseline: T0) and immediately after the end of each training (T1).</p> <p>Main outcomes measures:</p> <p>We used as main outcome measure: the brief repeatable battery of neuropsychological test to assess various cognitive abilities; and the multiple sclerosis quality of life-54 (MSQoL-54).</p> <p>Results:</p> <p>Both the groups benefit from 8 weeks of CR. In particular, the EG got better results in cognitive function, with regard to selective reminding test long term storage (<em>P</em> &lt; .000), long term retrieval (<em>P</em> = .007), and delayed recall of the 10/36 spatial recall test (<em>P</em> = .001), as compared with the CG. Moreover, the improvement in emotional status, motivation, mood and quality of life (with regard to the mental component;&nbsp;<em>P</em> &lt; .000) was more evident in the EG.</p> <p>Conclusions:</p> <p>NMT could be considered a complementary approach to enhance CCR in patients affected by MS.</p>
