"I'm something of an untrained, unofficial cultural anthropologist myself. Ihave a business interviewing people to capture their personal histories. I'm always interested how people fit into their world and how they affect their world. I'm a graphic designer who works in the same building as the printing presses that I recorded. Iwalk past the presses every day on my way to talk to the folks in the prepress department. I'm on friendly but not drinking terms with the pressmen. I'm a friend with the prepress manager. Three Heidelberg presses are installed side by side in an open warehouse-like room. The presses are about twenty feet long and about five feet high. With their series of four humps or mounds where each printing cylinder is located, the presses remind one of giant, gray, mechanical caterpillars. Each press has a cyan cylinder, a magenta cylinder, a yellow cylinder and a black cylinder – so the humps are brightly colored. The presses are well lit by banks of fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling over each press. When you walk into the press room you hear the sound of rock music blaring from a boom box radio mixed with the general din of the presses. It is only when you walk up to a press like Idid for the recordings that you really start to hear the individual strains of clicking, clacking and mechanical, syncopated chattering. When I made my recordings I was intrigued by the subtle variations in the sounds produced by these machines that aren't apparent when you first walk through the door. The pressmen were kind enough to allow me to walk right up to the presses and poke my microphone quite close to the rotating press cylinders. Iuse a Danish Pro Audio microphone about the size of a pencil eraser. An extremely sensitive mic with the capacity for capturing loud sounds such as the presses up close. Cross-cultural music corpus: The Natural History of Song Discography (randomized 14s excerpts)
<p>This repository contains 14-second excerpts of the <em>Natural History of Song</em> Discography. The audio corpus was originally published in Mehr et al. (2019, Science) and the full audio files are available via DUA on the Harvard Dataverse (<a href="https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/SESAO1">https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/SESAO1</a>). This repository makes available the excerpts of each track, under Fair Use, given their brief length (14 seconds each). These were also used in other papers (e.g., Mehr & Singh et al., 2018, Current Biology; Bainbridge & Bertolo et al., 2021, Nature Human Behaviour; Hilton & Crowley-de Thierry et al., 2022, JEP:General; Yurdum et al., 2023, PNAS) and are concurrently posted on the Open Science Framework (<a href="https://osf.io/vcybz/">https://osf.io/vcybz/</a>). They are permanently archived here for easier accessibility.</p> <p>Other Natural History of Song data, including staff-notation transcriptions of all the songs, are available at <a href="https://osf.io/jmv3q/">https://osf.io/jmv3q/</a>. There is also an expanded version of the corpus, with 1007 songs (including all 118 of the original NHS songs, available on Zenodo at <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8237500">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8237500</a>.</p> <p>The audio excerpts are provided in MP3 format for use in perception experiments. There are 118 excerpts. Each row of <strong>NHSDiscography-metadata.csv </strong>corresponds to one song, and provides general information about each song, including original sources. <strong>NHSDiscography-codebook.pdf</strong> summarizes the types of metadata available. Both these documents were originally published in Mehr et al. Cross-cultural music corpus: The Expanded Natural History of Song Discography
<p>This repository hosts the <strong>Expanded Natural History of Song Discography</strong>. It contains 1007 audio recordings of vocal music gathered from many human societies, each annotated with a world region, language, and behavioural context. </p> <p>Each song file contains a 10-second excerpt of the source audio, selected at random from only portions of the recording that contain an audible singer. Given the short form of each excerpt, and the intended use of these files only for research purposes, they have been made available under Fair Use.</p> <p><strong>NHS2-songs.zip </strong>contains the audio files, volume-matched and with 1s fade in/out added, in MP3 format. These can be analysed as-is or used in experiments.</p> <p><strong>NHS2-metadata.csv </strong>contains annotations, where each row corresponds to a song.
