Moving vessel profiler (MVP) transects from PolarFront 2022-05 cruise

MVP transects 2022-05

The Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) was deployed to collect data with high-spatial resolution along transects aiming to cross the front. Instruments contained in the profiling unit ("fish") of the winch were a CTD (AML µCTD), a fluorescence sensor (WETLABS) and a laser optical plankton counter (LOPC).

Together the instruments yield data on the physical environment, phytoplankton, zooplankton and other particle distributions.

Weather conditions during the cruise allowed sampling along two transects (S1 and parts of S2). However, S1 did not cross the polar front due to too thick ice cover in the North. The south (waves to high) and north (ice) of transect S2 were sampled by a different platform, data elsewhere, together resulting in a complete transect crossing the front.

Coverage

Transect S1 start: 75 N, 29 30' E, 20 May at 06:57 UTC
Transect S1 end: 75 55' N, 29 54' E, 20 May at 16:16 UTC

Transect S2 start: 75 24' N, 29 E, 23 May at 16:03 UTC
Transect S2 end: 76 43' N, 29 30' E, 24 May at 03:43 UTC

S1: 2022-05-20T06:57Z/2022-05-20T06:57Z
S2: 2022-05-23T16:16Z/2022-05-24T03:43Z

Moving vessel profiler (MVP) transect from PolarFront 2023-08 cruise

The Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) was deployed to collect data with high-spatial resolution along our transect crossing the front. Instruments contained in the profiling unit ("fish") of the winch were a CTD (AML µCTD), a fluorescence sensor (WETLABS) and a laser optical plankton counter (LOPC).

Together the instruments yield data on the physical environment, phytoplankton, zooplankton and other particle distributions

During the entire deployment of the MVP, weather conditions were optimal with very low wind speeds and calm sea. Apart from one stop at the surface due to a fishing vessel in our transect (20 min stop), no sampling issues whatsoever were experienced. A few breaks along the transect were taken to collect water samples and to set out the Sailbuoy and Seaglider.

Transect start: 75N, 29 30' E, 17 August at 02:13 UTC

Transect end: 78N, 29 30' E, 18 August at 11:09 UTC

In total the transect was 333 km long and 382 profiles to 25 m above bottom were collected, resulting in a spatial resolution of, on average, 1 profile every 870 m.

Shotgun MVP: Reducing risk in highly unpredictable ML products

Machine learning products do not fit neatly into the agile methodology. There are different reasons for this, the primary one being the lack of certainty behind which directions will be successful (due to data quality and similar issues). Thus, what often happens in organizations is pilotitis - the disease of launching MVP after MVP without tangible progress and commitment.

There is a method to address this issue while still alleviating the uncertainty behind planning MVPs - the Shotgun MVP. As a first step, several MVP initiatives are launched simultaneously (staffed to the bare minimum needed). Thus, all possible approaches are covered. This process continues for several sprints until a clear frontrunner becomes apparent - based on a "success" metric. There is flexibility in defining this metric, and possible examples include performance metrics (i.e., model accuracy) and solution complexity (such as the workforce needed to complete further development iterations). After this MVP (MVP II in our case) is selected, resources are committed fully to it for the following sprints while keeping the other options as backup plans or possible enhancements for downstream work.

This simple procedure is not easy to perform and requires careful and restrained execution but can provide the shortest way to delivering a successful ML product.

Formato: Planilha Excel (.xlsx)

Conteúdo:

Perguntas e respostas do questionário aplicado
