Sustainable power generation for at least one month from ambient humidity using unique nanofluidic diode
<p>The continuous energy-harvesting in moisture environment is attractive for the development of clean energy source. Controlling the transport of ionized mobile charge in intelligent nanoporous membrane systems is a promising strategy to develop the moisture-enabled electric generator. However, existing designs still suffer from low output power density. Moreover, these devices can only produce short-term (mostly a few seconds or a few hours, rarely for a few days) voltage and current output in the ambient environment. Here, we show an ionic diode–type hybrid membrane capable of continuously generating energy in the ambient environment. The built-in electric field of the nanofluidic diode-type PN junction helps the selective ions separation and the steady-state one-way ion charge transfer. This directional ion migration is further converted to electron transportation at the surface of electrodes via oxidation-reduction reaction and charge adsorption, thus resulting in a continuous voltage and current with high energy conversion efficiency.</p>
Experimental feeding validates nanofluidic array technology for DNA detection of ungulate prey in wolf scats
<p><span>The study of carnivores' diet is a key component to enhance knowledge on the ecology of predators and their effect on prey populations. Although molecular approaches to detect prey DNA in carnivore scats are improving, the validation of their accuracy, a prerequisite for reliable applications within ecological frameworks, is still lagging behind the methodological advances. Indeed, variation in detection probability among prey species can occur, representing a potentially insidious source of bias in food-habit studies of carnivores. Calibration of DNA-based methods involves the optimization of specificity and sensitivity and, whereas priority is usually given to the former to avoid false positives, sensitivity is rarely investigated so that false negatives may be largely overlooked. </span></p> <p><span>We conducted feeding trials with captive wolves (</span><em><span>Canis lupus</span></em><span>) to validate a nanofluidic array technology recently developed for detection of multiple prey species in scats. Using 371 scat samples from 12 wolves fed with a single-prey diet, the sensitivity of our nanofluidic array method varied between 0.45 and 0.95 for the six main ungulate prey species. The method sensitivity was enhanced by using multiple markers per species and by a relatively low threshold for the number of amplifying markers required to confirm a detection. Yet, at least two markers should be used to avoid false positives. By acknowledging sources of bias in sensitivity to reliably interpret results of DNA-based dietary methods, our study highlights the relevance of feeding experiments to optimally calibrate the relative thresholds to define a positive detection and investigate occurrence and extent of biases in sensitivity.</span></p>
Data compilation for "Label-free Imaging of Catalytic H2O2 Decomposition on Single Colloidal Pt Nanoparticles using Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy"
<p>Data compilation for "Label-free Imaging of Catalytic H2O2 Decomposition on Single Colloidal Pt Nanoparticles using Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy"</p> <p>This data set contains raw and evaluated data for the publication mentioned above and is structured into three parts which are packed as .zip files. The file labeled with MAIN 1 contains data for the figures 1 to 3 and MAIN 2 for figures 4 to 6 of the main manuscript. The file labeled with SI contains all data related to the supplementary information.</p> <p>The data itself has three main types. There are .tif images which contain the raw darkfield microscopy images, usually as image stack of several single pictures. Some of these .tif images have been processed according to the description in the publication and single frames exported as .png images.<br> The .xlsx files contain the evaluated data that has been extracted from the microscopic images and was used to draw the corresponding graphs in the publication. The individual tables and the respective columns/rows have a basic labeling identifying their contents.<br> In addition, the data set also contains SEM/TEM images that show mainly the platinum particles used in the experiments. There is also one Comsol simulation for the flow in a nanochannel that is being filled with a bubble, which was created with Comsol 5.5.</p>
