Sensitized photon avalanche nanothermometry in Pr3+ and Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 colloidal nanoparticles

<p>ABSTRACT</p> <p>Photon avalanche (PA) is a highly nonlinear luminescence phenomenon that occurs in lanthanide doped materials. PA exhibits a very steep power law relationship between luminescence intensity and the optical pump power. Due to the mechanism of PA emission, even weak perturbations to the energy looping and energy distribution within excited levels of lanthanide emitters are expected to significantly modify luminescent properties. Therefore, in this work, we experimentally study the impact of temperature (from &ndash; 175 to 175&thinsp;&deg;C, with 25&thinsp;&deg;C steps) on the sensitized PA emission in NaYF4 nanoparticles co-doped with 15% of Yb3+ and 0.5% of Pr3+ ions under 852&thinsp;nm pumping wavelength. Significant variations of the PA nonlinearity (<em>S</em>&thinsp;=&amp;thinsp;4.5&ndash;9), PA gain (from 50 up to 175), and PA threshold (from 100 up to 700&thinsp;kW/cm2) were observed under temperature rise from &ndash; 175 to 175&thinsp;&deg;C, respectively. The relative temperature sensitivities based on luminescence intensity changes were larger than 1.5%&thinsp;&deg;C&ndash;1 in the whole temperature range, reaching the maximal value of 7.5% &deg;C&ndash;1 at 0&thinsp;&deg;C. Moreover, a new thermometric parameter was proposed, namely, the PA pump power threshold, which exhibited over 0.5% &deg;C&ndash;1 relative sensitivities in the same wide temperature range. Owing to PA properties, the temperature sensitivity range and the corresponding relative sensitivities may be intentionally tuned by selecting the appropriate pump intensity in respect to the power dependence relationship. These studies not only provide a better understanding of fundamental processes and susceptibility of the sensitized photon avalanche emission to temperature variation, but also show the possibility of using PA materials as sensitive (nano)thermometers.</p>

Engineering the Compositional Architecture of Core-Shell Upconverting Lanthanide-Doped Nanoparticles for Optimal Luminescent Donor in Resonance Energy Transfer: The Effects of Energy Migration and Storage

<p>F&ouml;rster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between single molecule donor (D) and acceptor (A) is well understood from fundamental perspective and is widely applied in biology, biotechnology, medical diagnostics and bio-imaging. However, the reliability of molecular FRET measurements can be affected by numerous artefacts which eventually hamper quantitative and reliable analysis, mostly due to issues with the donor and acceptor molecules. Lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have demonstrated their suitability as alternative donor species. Nevertheless, while they solved most disadvantageous features of organic donor molecules, such as photo-bleaching, spectral cross-excitation and emission bleed-through, the fundamental understanding and practical realizations of bio-assays with UCNP donors remain challenging. Among others, the actual donor ions in individual donor UCNPs are the numerous activator ions randomly distributed in the nanoparticle at various distances to acceptors anchored on the nanoparticle surface. Further, the power dependent, complex energy transfer upconversion and energy migration between sensitizing and activating lanthanide ions within UCNPs complicate the decay based analysis of <strong><em>D</em></strong>-<strong><em>A</em></strong> interaction. In this work, the assessment of designed virtual core-shell nanoparticle (VNP) models led us to the new designs of UCNPs, such as &hellip;@Er, Yb@Er, Yb@YbEr, which were experimentally evaluated as donor nanoparticles and compared to the simulations. Moreover, the specific properties of lanthanide-based upconversion motivated us to analyze not only steady-state luminescence and luminescence decay responses of both the UNCP donor and the sensitized acceptor, but also the effects of their luminescence rise kinetics upon RET was discussed in newly proposed disparity measurements. The presented studies help to understand the role of energy-transfer and energy migration between lanthanide ion dopants (due to their concentration and spatial distribution) and how the architecture of core-shell UCNPs affects their performance as FRET donors to organic acceptor dyes.</p>

Data from: The thermoelectric properties of Au nanoparticle-incorporated Al-doped mesoporous ZnO thin films

Mesoporous Al-doped ZnO thin films incorporated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were synthesized using a sol-gel and evaporation-induced self-assembly process. In this work, the complementary effects of Au NP incorporation and Al doping on the mesoporous ZnO thin films' thermoelectric properties were analyzed. The incorporated Au NPs induced an increase in electrical conductivity but a detriment in the pore arrangement of the mesoporous ZnO thin film, which was accompanied by a decrease in porosity. However, the addition of the Al dopant minimized the pore structural collapse because of the inhibition of the grain growth in the ZnO skeletal structure, resulting in an enhancement of the pore arrangement and porosity. When the Au NPs and Al dopant were added at the same time, the degradation in the pore structure was minimized and the electrical conductivity was effectively increased but the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient was decreased. However, as a result, the thermoelectric power factor was increased by 2.4 times compared to the pristine mesoporous ZnO thin film. It was found that co-introducing the Au NPs and Al doping to the mesoporous ZnO structure was effective in preserving the pore structure and increasing the electric conductivity, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric property of the mesoporous ZnO thin film.
