Biomass %N, %C, natural abundance 15N and 13C isotopic signatures for common and rare under- and overstory plants in long unburned and burned (1999) boreal forest stands, Caribou-Poker Creek and Delta Junction
This dataset contains leaf, aboveground stem, and fruit carbon and N concentration and natural abundance isotope data for new and old tissue fractions of common and rare plant species in burned and unburned black spruce forest stands. Stands were located in either Caribou-Poker Creek or Delta Junction, in either unburned areas, or in areas burned in 1999 fires. Biomass was collected between 2000 and 2001 in mid-July at peak biomass.
Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Foliar Nitrogen and Natural Abundance Nitrogen Isotopic Composition
Foliar nitrogen and natural abundance stable isotopes of nitrogen in foliage were measured on all Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) plots. There are six plots total (each 11 x 14 m). Two are warmed 5 degrees C throughout the growing season (Plots 3 and 4). Two others are warmed 5 degrees C in the growing season and have snow removed during winter to induce soil freezing and then warming cables turn on to create thaws; each soil freeze/thaw cycle includes 72-hours of soil freezing followed by 72-hours of thaw (Plots 5 and 6). Four kilometers (2.5 mi) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Two additional plots serve as controls for our experiment (Plots 1 and 2). This data set includes foliar nitrogen and natural abundance stable isotopes of nitrogen in foliage from 2012 to 2018. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
The natural abundance of stable water isotopes method may overestimate deep-layer soil water use by trees
<p>The dataset is the basic data of the author's paper 'The natural abundance of stable water isotopes method may overestimate deep-layer soil water use by trees'. The main content of this paper is to study the water use strategy of trees in deep vadose zone regions by first identifying the soil layer depths from which trees derive their water source using isotopic labeling in deep layers and then calculating water sources based on the natural abundance of stable isotopes. We also compared the results with the natural abundance of stable water isotopes method. Taking apple plantation as an example, the data set includes the soil moisture, isotopic value in soil water, xylem water and precipitation.</p>
