SBC LTER: Reef: Seasonal Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Taxon-specific seasonal net primary production (NPP) for macroalgae
This dataset provides estimates of seasonal net primary production (NPP) for all taxa of macroalgae sampled in fixed plots of the SBC LTER's seasonal kelp forest monitoring sites. The five reefs (Arroyo Quemada 34°28.048’N, 120°07.031’W; Carpinteria 34°23.474’N, 119°32.510’W; Isla Vista 34°23.275’N, 119°32.792’W; Mohawk 34°23.649’N, 119°43.762’W; and Naples 34° 25.342’N, 119° 57.102’W) ranged in depth from 5.8 m to 8.9 m (MLLW) and were chosen to represent a range of physical and biological characteristics known to influence subtidal macroalgal assemblages in the region. NPP of understory taxa was calculated using field measurements of irradiance and biomass (derived from abundance) and laboratory estimates of taxon-specific photosynthetic parameters. NPP for the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, was calculated using linear relationships between frond density in a given season and average NPP for that season.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>During the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017, seawater O2/Ar ratios were measured underway from the ship's flow-through seawater system. Net community production, nutrients, and hydrographic parameters in the South China Sea in summer 2017
<p>In summer, the Vietnam Offshore Current (VOC) and the Kuroshio intrusion are two important processes provoking considerable environmental fluctuations in the South China Sea (SCS). Net community production (NCP) is an important proxy of biological pump strength and can be estimated based on the dissolved oxygen to argon ratio (O<sub>2</sub>/Ar) in the mixed layer. To determine the influence of the VOC and Kuroshio intrusion on the NCP in the oligotrophic SCS, we conducted high-resolution underway measurements of O<sub>2</sub>/Ar and hydrographic parameters using membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS, HPR-40, Hiden, UK) and multi-parameter water quality logger (RBR Maestro, Canada) during the cruise in the northeastern SCS in summer 2017. NCP in the mixed layer was estimated using the supersaturation of O<sub>2</sub>/Ar (Delta O<sub>2</sub>/Ar) and gas transfer velocity (k). All the underway observation data were compiled into the 5-min interval. To monitor the nutritive fluctuations induced by the VOC and Kuroshio intrusion, we also collected surface water samples from Niskin bottles at sampling stations for the nutrients analysis; the nutrients were then determined by an auto-analyzer. We divided the cruise into three phases (Phase 1, 2, and 3); Phase 1 was dominated by the Kuroshio intrusion, while Phase 3 was influenced by the VOC. Because the upwelling driven by cyclonic eddies and typhoons could introduce considerable uncertainties to the NCP result, we excluded the data obtained in the upwelling regions.</p>

Net community production, nutrients, and hydrographic parameters in the South China Sea in October 2014 and June 2015
<p>Net community production (NCP) corresponds to the difference between photosynthesis and respiration and can be estimated based on the dissolved oxygen to argon ratio (O<sub>2</sub>/Ar) in the mixed layer. NCP is also an important proxy for the biological pump in the ocean. In order to figure out the influencing factors on NCP in the northern slope region of the South China Sea (SCS), we conducted high-resolution underway measurements of O<sub>2</sub>/Ar and hydrographic parameters using membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) and multi-parameter water quality logger (RBR Maestro) in the northern slope region of the SCS in October 2014 and June 2015, assisted by nutrients measurements. NCP in the mixed layer was estimated using the biological supersaturation of O<sub>2</sub>/Ar, Δ (O<sub>2</sub>/Ar), and gas transfer velocity (k). All the underway data were compiled into the 5-min interval. Surface water samples for the nutrients analysis were collected from Niskin bottles mounted on the conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) rosette at sampling stations, the nutrients were then photometrically determined by an auto-analyzer. The mixed layer depth (MLD) and the euphotic depth (Z<sub>eu</sub>) were calculated at stations where CTD casts were made based on potential density and chlorophyll fluorescence profile, respectively.</p>

At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) contains aboveground net primary productivity of Antennaria neglecta measurements in gramsPerMeterSquaredPerYear units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data.
