Imputed Forest Composition Map for New England Screened by Species Range Boundaries 2001-2006

Initializing forest landscape models (FLMs) to simulate changes in tree species composition requires accurate fine-scale forest attribute information mapped contiguously over large areas. Nearest-neighbor imputation maps have high potential for use as the initial condition within FLMs, but the tendency for field plots to be imputed over large geographical distances results in species frequently mapped outside of their home ranges, which is problematic. We developed an approach for evaluating and selecting field plots for imputation based on their similarity in feature-space, their species composition, and their geographical distance between source and imputation to produce a map that is appropriate for initializing an FLM. We applied this approach to map 13m ha of forest throughout the six New England states (Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine). The map itself is a .img raster file of FIA plot CN numbers. To access FIA data from this map, one has to link the mapcodes in this map to FIA data supplied by USDA FIA database (https://apps.fs.usda.gov/fia/datamart/datamart.html). Due to plot confidentiality and integrity concerns, pixels containing FIA plots were always assigned to some other plot than the actual one found there.

Functional Traits of Selected Tree Species in Harvard Forest, New Hampshire, and Southern Quebec 2015

Increasing evidence suggests that species' phenological responses may predict their performance with warming, but this work has generally ignored whether phenology is correlated with other traits known to drive plant performance. This is perhaps surprising given that interest in functional traits has also increased in recent decades, yet within the functional traits literature there has been an equally limited consideration of phenology, perhaps because robustly estimating it is time-intensive, and simple field estimates will show extreme variation across sites of different latitudes and climate regimes. Here we collected a suite of trait data on the same species for which we collected phenological data (see related dataset HF314, Leaf and Flower Phenology of Woody Plant Species at Harvard Forest and Southern Quebec 2015) to help address this gap. We focused on populations of trees in temperate forests in the Northeast face, which face different environmental conditions across their ranges. This project measured functional traits of trees at two to four sites, to provide a foundation for studies on the relationship between range shift, phenology, and functional traits.

Bee species abundance and composition in three ecosystem types at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA

This study was designed to examine community- or population-level fluctuations in bee species at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, both intra- and inter-annually. From 2002 to 2019, passive funnel traps were used to collect bees at three sites, each representing a different ecosystem type of the southwestern U.S. (Plains grassland, Chihuahuan Desert grassland, and Chihuahuan Desert shrubland). Bees were collected during each month from March through October, and were identified to species by taxonomic experts.

Potential Tree Species Richness in the Forests of New Caledonia

<h1>Description</h1> <p>This dataset aims to represent, in geographic space, the potential distribution of biological tree richness in New Caledonian forests according to a 1 ha grid based on the observed distribution of 148,085 occurrences for 1112 tree species.</p> <p>For each species, we constructed the environmental niche based on 7 abiotic variables (rainfall, slope, elevation, compound topographic index, substrate, sunshine index, distance to the east coast; cf. Pouteau et al., 2015, 2019 for details). We used species distribution models (SDM) and stacked species distribution models (S-SDM) through the R-package SSDM (Schmitt et al., 2017).</p> <p>According to the S-SDM model, the potential richness ranges between 18 and 355 tree species per hectare in New Caledonia. We adjusted this range to the richness observed on 24 1 ha plots from the Permanent Plant Inventory Network of New Caledonia (NC-PIPPN), which ranges between 35 and 121 tree species per hectare. Finally, we clipped the resulting raster with the forest map of New Caledonia (version 2024, Birnbaum et al., 2024) to produce the raster of potential distribution of biological tree richness in the New Caledonian forests at 1 ha resolution.</p> <h1>Content</h1> <p>This dataset was produced, analyzed, and verified using a combination of open-source software, including QGIS, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Python, R, and the GDAL library, all running on Linux.</p> <ul> <li>amap_raster_forest_richness.tif is a GeoTIFF utilizing the WGS84 international coordinate system and consists of a single band with graduated values ranging from 35 to 121 potential tree species per hectare. The NoData value was set to 0.</li> <li>amap_raster_forest_richness.png is a image illustrating the spatial distribution of the data and values</li> </ul> <h1>Limitations</h1> <p>This dataset is strictly based on the relationship between a few environmental variables and a limited set of tree species occurrences. While it provides a valuable overview of potential tree species richness, it represents only a part of the complex biotic and abiotic interactions that lead to the effective presence or absence of a species in the environment. Consequently, the projection of these probabilities onto the geographical space provides only an overview of the potential richness of forest fragments, which should not be considered as the observed diversity.</p> <p>Additionally, due to a lack of occurrence data, only the Grande-Terre forest is covered in this raster.</p>

Molecular and Taxonomic Reevaluation of the Digitaria filiformis Complex (Poaceae) including a Globally Extinct, Single Site Endemic from New Hampshire, USA, and a New Species from Mexico

<p>We examine the <em>Digitaria filiformis </em>complex, to determine the proper taxonomic rank and rarity of each taxon. The taxonomy of the <em>D. filiformis </em>complex is highly debated and includes two widespread species, <em>D. filiformis </em>and <em>D. villosa</em>; a possibly extinct species endemic to a single-site in New Hampshire, <em>D. laeviglumis</em>; and a rare species of southern Florida and the West Indies, <em>D.</em><em> dolichophylla. </em>We conducted morphologic comparisons and molecular analysis of the four members of the <em>D. filiformis</em> complex, together with specimens from Mexico and Venezuela purportedly identified as <em>D. laeviglumis</em> (morphology only). Based on results of phylogenetic analyses of plastid and nuclear ITS sequences and morphologic comparisons, we recognize five species in the <em>D. filiformis </em>complex, including a newly described Mexican endemic <em>D. glabrifloris. </em>After field investigation we have moved the global rank of <em>D. laeviglumis </em>from globally historical (GH) to extinct (GX), as there is virtually no likelihood of rediscovery. <em>Digitaria</em><em> dolichophylla </em>is much rarer than previously recognized, moving from secure (T5) to imperiled with extinction (G2).</p>

Long-term species-level measurements of fall season aboveground net primary production in the Monsoon Rainfall Manipulation Experiment (MRME), Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA

Anticipated intensification of the North American Monsoon in the southwestern United States is predicted to shift growing season rainfall patterns, historically characterized by frequent small rain events, to a more extreme precipitation regime consisting of fewer, but larger rain events. Atmospheric nitrogen deposition is also increasing throughout this dryland region as a result of anthropogenic activities. Alterations in rainfall size and frequency, along with changes in nitrogen availability, are likely to have significant consequences for aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and plant community dynamics in drylands, where ecological processes are limited by water and nitrogen availability. This data package accompanies an associated manuscript in which we used fourteen years (2007-2020) of growing season ANPP measurements from the long-term Monsoon Rainfall Manipulation Experiment (MRME), located in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, to investigate how changes in rainfall regimes, along with chronic nitrogen enrichment, impact ANPP in a northern Chihuahuan Desert grassland.

Seedling emergence and biomass data of nine dryland plant species characterizing the impact of soil residual auxin herbicide across two soil types and water pulse events on greenhouse growth; Las Cruces, New Mexico, Spring 2021.

Synthetic-auxin herbicides are often used to control woody plants and aid in grassland restoration. Seed-based restoration is common alongside herbicide applications and there may be unintended effects of these herbicides on dryland plant species at the seed and seedling stages. Additionally, abiotic conditions at the time of herbicide application may influence herbicide-soil-plant interactions. We conducted a greenhouse study to examine the effects of a common shrub-control herbicide mix and its interaction with soil type and a post-herbicide water pulse on common desert plant seeds and seedlings. In this greenhouse study, we found that a subset of species responded negatively to soil residual herbicide activity of a mixture of aminopyralid, clopyralid, and triclopyr at the seed and seedling stages. Species sensitive to soil herbicide residues were primarily shrub and forb species that are often the target species of herbicide applications for woody plant control, such as Prosopis glandulosa (honey mesquite) and Larrea tridentata (creosote bush). However, two shrub species (Atriplex canescens [four-wing saltbush] and Yucca elata [soaptree yucca]) and one perennial grass species (Digitaria californica [Arizona cottontop]), which are used in dryland restoration projects, were found to be particularly sensitive to soil residual herbicide activity. Thus, if using these herbicides to control woody plants and restore herbaceous vegetation via active seeding or relying on the in situ seed bank, considerations should be given to what species are used in the seed mix, what species are already present in the soil seed bank, and other details of the circumstances of herbicide application.

Ecophysiological variables of common shrub and grass species during the growing season following simulated sandblasting trials at the Jornada Experimental Range, New Mexico, USA, 2018 and 2019

In this dataset, we report ecophysiological variables of contrasting perennial grass (Bouteloua eriopoda, Sporobolus airoides, and Aristida purpurea) and shrub (Prosopis glandulosa, Atriplex canescens, and Larrea tridentata) functional groups before and after a series of simulated sandblasting events with various intensities and frequencies. We hypothesized that grass species are more susceptible to the resulting "sandblasting" (i.e., abrasive damage by wind-blown particulates) than shrubs, thus contributing to the shift from grass to shrub dominance. To test this, we conducted a wind tunnel experiment at the USDA Jornada Experimental Range in 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. Potted plants were subjected to different levels of sandblasting in a novel portable wind tunnel, and plants’ ecophysiological responses including leaf gas exchange and nighttime leaf stomatal conductance were quantified. All tested plants were then grown in benign greenhouse conditions to investigate plant recovery post sandblasting. This dataset contains data about plant biomass and height, leaf chlorophyll content, leaf gas exchange, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency (WUE) under the experimental treatments above. This study is complete.

High water temperature significantly influences swimming performance of New Zealand migratory species
