Leaf angle as a leaf and canopy trait: Rejuvenating its role in ecology with new technology

<p>Life on Earth depends on the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy by plants through photosynthesis. A fundamental challenge in optimizing photosynthesis is to adjust leaf angles to efficiently use the intercepted sunlight under the constraints of heat stress, water loss, and competition. Despite the importance of leaf angle, until recently, we have lacked data and frameworks to describe and predict leaf angle dynamics and their impacts from leaves to the globe. We review the role of leaf angle in studies of ecophysiology, ecosystem ecology, and earth system science and highlight the essential yet understudied role of leaf angle as an ecological strategy to regulate plant carbon-water-energy nexus and to bridges leaf, canopy, and earth system processes. Using two models, we show that leaf angle variations have significant impacts on not only canopy-scale photosynthesis, energy balance, and water use efficiency but also light competition within forest canopy. New techniques to measure leaf angles are emerging, opening opportunities to understand the rarely-measured intraspecific, interspecific, seasonal, and interannual variations of leaf angles and their implications to plant biology and earth system science. We conclude by proposing three directions for future research.</p>

Social representations and interface layout: a new way of enhancing persuasive technology applied to organ donation

<p>Although campaigns promoting organ donation have proved their effectiveness, increasing the number of people who explicitly agree to become donors is still difficult. Based on the social marketing notion of persuasive technology, we reasoned that it was timely to focus on the design of this persuasive technology and to analyze its contribution in particularly challenging contexts such as organ donation. More specifically, the originality of the present study lay in the way we linked the field of persuasive technology to the theory of social representations, and combined them with an analysis of the ergonomic aspects of interface layout. This study had two complementary goals. The first was to determine whether the sociocognitive salience of the central elements of social representations (i.e., the most frequent and important themes related to the subject&mdash;here, organ donation&mdash;for individuals), can be used to achieve persuasive outcomes. The second was to determine whether interface layout, in terms of information location and background characteristics (color and contrast), can strengthen the persuasive impact. University students (<em>N</em> &gt; 200) were exposed to a computer screen displaying a message involving either central or peripheral elements of the social representations of organ donation (status), placed either in the middle or on one side of the screen (location), and shown against either a white or a blue background (background). Eye-tracking data were recorded, in addition to self-reported data. In line with the elaboration likelihood model, results showed that participants who were exposed to central (vs. peripheral) elements of the social representations of organ donation followed the central route in processing information. Moreover, they had stronger attitudes, and more of them stated that they were <em>actual</em> organ donors. Importantly, however, at least for some variables, these status-related effects were not independent of the interface layout. More specifically, the persuasive impact of the central elements was enhanced when the information was displayed in the middle (vs. the side) of the screen and when it was displayed on a white (vs. blue) background. We discuss the theoretical and practical issues raised by these results.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

The sustainable development of coal mines by new cutting roof technology

<p>China consumes more than 3.6 billion tons of coal every year, accounting for over 60% of the energy consumption. Therefore, the sustainable development of coal mine is a problem needed to be solved by the Chinese government. During the coal resources recovery, the protective coal pillars between the adjacent working faces cause the serious loss for coal resources. In order to solve the problem, it was put forward that the new technology of roof cutting with chain arm to retain roadway in the paper. Firstly, the process of retaining roadway, roof-cutting parameters and the damage ranges of roadway surrounding rock induced by roof cutting with chain arm were analyzed. Then, it was given that the working resistance of the temporary support equipment in technology of roof cutting with chain arm to retain roadway. Next, the roof-cutting height, the type of temporary support equipment, working resistance of portal support and support parameters of the bolt and anchor cables were optimized by the numerical calculation. Finally, the industrial experiment of retaining roadway by roof cutting with chain arm was carried out in a working face. The surrounding rock damage was minimal with the use of chain arm-roof cutting technology, and the variation range of the uniaxial compressive strength was only 5%, resulting in the roof damage rate to 82 mm. From the studies, it was concluded that this technology could be of a great asset to the coal mining community.</p>

Data from: Clinical Outcomes Associated with the use of the NexSite™ Hemodialysis Catheter with New Exit Barrier Technology: Results from a Prospective, Observational Multi-center Registry Study

Purpose: Decreasing the risk of catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) remains a key focus for improving outcomes and reducing cost of care for hemodialysis (HD) patients. Recent studies demonstrate CRBSI rates can be improved by managing bacterial colonization at the catheter exit site. Herein we present the results of a study documenting the clinical performance of the NexSite® HD catheter, a new tunneled central venous catheter which incorporates Exit Site Management (ESM) technology. Methods: We conducted an observational study using a prospective, multi-center registry of HD patients implanted with the NexSite® HD catheter. The primary endpoint for the study was CRBSI rate for a period up to 180-days following catheter placement. Secondary endpoints included device placement success rate, exit site healing, development of an exit site or tunnel infection, and early or late non-infectious catheter-related complications. All reasons for early non-elective catheter removal were recorded. Results: A total of 115 HD patients at 6 sites were included in the final analysis. Cumulative catheter use was 10,924 days with a mean duration of 95 days. Seven patients experienced CRBSIs during the study period resulting in a CRBSI rate of 0.64 per 1,000 catheter-days. Seventy-four patients (64.3%) had either elective catheter removal (n=56) or utilized the catheter for the entire 180-day observation period (n=18). Thirty-five patients (30%) underwent non-elective device removal either due to CRBSI (n=5), low flow (n=16), exit site issues (n=7), or for other causes (n=7). Six patients died during the observation period with 1 death due to CRBSI-associated complications and the remaining 5 deaths attributed to non-device related causes. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the NexSite HD catheter equipped with ESM technology can achieve a CRBSI rate in compliance with the NKF KDOQI (National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiatives) Clinical Performance Guidelines stated goal of less than 1.0/1,000 catheter-days when used in hemodialysis patients using current standard of care nursing protocols.
