Plant & lichen species composition data for Saddle Nodal Plots, 1971 - ongoing.

To study long-term changes in alpine tundra plant communities, thirty permanently marked plots were surveyed in 1971. These same plots were surveyed at twenty, thirty, forty and fifty year intervals from the initial sampling date; in 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021. Due to covid and other events, data for the 50-year time point was collected over three summers, from 2021-2023. Plots are one by ten meters, divided into ten subplot quadrats, and marked with rebar. The presence or absence of each vascular plant species was recorded per plot. The cover was recorded for each species that appeared in a one meter by ten centimeter strip at the base of each quadrat within each plot. The cover of non-vascular plants, soil, rocks, and lichens was also recorded within the strip in most sampling years. Lichen were also surveyed in 1971 and 2021.These data have been used to study the changes in vascular plant and lichen communities and cover across habitats following a moisture gradient on the saddle portion of Niwot Ridge; these habitats include dry fellfield, dry meadow, moist meadow, wet meadow, snow bank, and shrub tundra. While we have observed some changes in species richness and cover in the plots, overall the plant communities seem fairly stable over time. Lichen species richness has increased in some habitats, while some lichen species have been disappearing from others.

Individual plant phenology data for Saddle nodal plots, 1984 - 1992.

Phenological data were collected weekly for permanently tagged plants located in 14 permanent plots (refered to as the nodal plots) in the Niwot Ridge Saddle area. 12 of the plots represent the 6 plant communities or noda (two from each nodum) identified in the Saddle (May 1973). The two remaing plots were located adjacent to two temporary snowfences erected near Saddle grid stake 49. The plots were 1x10 m, and were further divided into 10, 1x1 m quadrats. Plant species studied include Acomastylis (Geum) rossii, Bistorta (Polygonum) bistortoides and Bistorta (Polygonum) vivipara. Ten individuals of each species present in a plot were randomly selected. Plants were tagged approximately two inches behind each plant with an aluminum tag labelled with the species abbreviation and plant number. Tagged plant locations were determined using a Cartesian coordinate system with the outside corner of quadrat 1 serving as the origin. These locations are on permanent file at INSTAAR. Data collection began on 1 June, or as plots became snow free, and continued until senescence. Missing tags were replaced during the first week of data collection. Missing plants were replaced by a new plant in immediate area and the new coordinates were recorded.

Soil chemical and physical property data for Saddle nodal plots, 1986.

Samples were collected from various soil horizons during installation of tension soil solution samplers adjacent to nodal plots in the Saddle. Excavation was limited to minimize disturbance. Consequently, complete soil profile descriptions were not made. Samples were analyzed in the laboratory for various constituents.

Aboveground biomass data for Saddle nodal plots, 1982 - 1990.

Estimates of annual primary productivity were made from clip harvests taken within 10 permanently marked plots representing five plant communities. The names of the plant communities (noda) and the associated plot numbers were as follows: fellfield (1 and 12), dry meadow (2 and 11), moist meadow (3 and 10), wet meadow (7 and 9), and snowbed (16 and 19). Maps showing the location of these plots can be found in the JFREA plant laboratory hard copy filing cabinet. Harvested material was separated into 8 above-ground standing crop and 4 composite fractions and weighed.

Soil moisture data for Saddle nodal plots, 1982 - 1989.

Soil moisture sampling in the Saddle area was performed at the ends (outside of) 12 permanent plots representing 6 plant communities or noda (two from each nodum) in the Saddle (May 1973). The design and location of the nodal plots was described in Pollak et al. (1988). Soil moisture data were collected from the 12 nodal plots weekly during the growing season from 1 June (Julian day 152) 1982 through mid-August 1988. Less-intensive sampling was done during the 1989 growing season. Sampling began when the plots became snow-free. The last sampling date varied among years and depended upon when plants had dehisced, weather, and available personnel. Soil moisture percentages were determined gravimetrically using soil samples collected outside of but adjacent to the ends of the plots (within 0.5 m of plot end). A #6 cork borer (64 mm^2) was used to remove a soil sample from each plot end (two per plot). Samples were taken from the rooting zone to a depth of 5 to 10 cm. A length of 5/8-inch diameter pipe (198 mm^2) was used instead of the cork borer in 1988. If rocks prevented an adequate sample depth, collection of a new sample was attempted nearby. Prior to the 1986 season a metal probe was used to detect below-ground rocks. Extracted cores were pushed into film canisters which were then sealed and labeled. Samples were collected before noon and were weighed within 10 hr. The wet soil samples were placed on aluminum pans, weighed, and oven dried at 100 degrees C for at least 24 hr. Dried soil was removed from the oven and immediately weighed. Prior to 1986 dried soil was placed in a dessicator for 15 min before weighing. Dried soil cores were saved and returned to the core holes. Wet+pan weights, dry+pan weights, and pan weights were recorded. Soil moisture was calculated as (((wet + pan weight) - (dry + pan weight)/((dry + pan weight) - pan weight)) * 100.

Saddle nodal plot soil analyses

During the summer of 1991, soil samples were collected from directly adjacent to the permanent plots on the Niwot Ridge Saddle. These permanent plots included 12 nodal plots that had been established in the early 1970s by Pat Webber and Diane Ebert-May. Results of analyses performed on soil samples collected at those plots during 1971 were reported in May (1973, 1976). The 1991 analyses were intended to repeat the earlier measures for comparative purposes. Soil cores (0-5 cm) were removed from the field using a 7.5-cm diameter corer.
