Data for: Nonlinear dynamics of the near-shore boundary layer of a large lake (Lake Geneva)
<p>We examined near-shore and pelagic current variability in Lake Geneva, a large and deep lake in western Europe, using observations from several measurement locations and a three dimensional numerical model, based on the period 2014–2016. The data include measurements from Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) campaigns and vertical temperature profiles along with the corresponding modelling results. The model used in this study is based on the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm, <a href="http://mitgcm.org/">http://mitgcm.org/</a>, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/96JC02775">https://doi.org/10.1029/96JC02775</a>).</p>
Experimental datasets of networks of nonlinear oscillators: Structure and dynamics during the path to synchronization
<p>The analysis of the interplay between structural and functional networks require experiments where both the specific structure of the connections between nodes and the time series of the underlying dynamical units are known at the same time. However, real datasets typically contain only one of the two ways (structural or functional) a network can be observed. Here, we provide experimental recordings of the dynamics of 28 nonlinear electronic circuits coupled in 20 different network configurations. For each network, we modify the coupling strength between circuits, going from an incoherent state of the system to a complete synchronization scenario. Time series containing 30000 points are recorded using a data-acquisition card capturing the analogic output of each circuit. The experiment is repeated three times for each network structure allowing to track the path to the synchronized state both at the level of the nodes (with its direct neighbors) and at the whole network. These datasets can be useful to test new metrics to evaluate the coordination between dynamical systems and to investigate to what extent the coupling strength is related to the correlation between functional and structural networks.</p> <p>We provide the times series of N=28 Rössler electronic oscillators for 20 different network configurations (compressed file with tag R1 to R20). For each network structure, we recorded the times series for 101 different coupling strengths between oscillators. Each one of the 101 corresponding files is labeled as ST_X_Y.dat where X is a value between X=0 and X=100 that corresponds, respectively, to the minimum and maximum coupling strength. The value of Y corresponds to the repetition number, which can be 1, 2 of 3 (i.e., we repeated the same experiment three times). Data files contain the second variable of the 28 nodes arranged in columns with a length of 30000 points. In a second file named Structure.zip, all the network structures are given, each file having a name Net_R.dat, where R=1, 2… 20. The degree of each node (i.e., number of output connections) is the same for all network configurations, where the specific neighbors of each node are re-arranged randomly.</p>
Experimental data for nonlinear dynamics and energy harvesting of bistable cantilever shells (grant 2021/41/B/ST8/03190 from the National Science Centre, Poland)
<p>An experimental tests on a cantilever composite bistable shell with a piezoelectric patch is reported. The shell is characterized by two stable configurations. Periodic force is applied at the shell’s clamped side through an electrodynamic shaker and the dynamic response is measured through an embedded strain gauge. Selected dynamic regimes are recorded by performing excitation frequency and amplitude sweeps. The resonance scenarios around the two natural frequencies corresponding to the stable configurations show different softening behavior. The excitation amplitude threshold level for snap-through motion is identified. The thested thin-walled pseudo-conical shell has been made of carbon-epoxy composite prepreg tape (AS4-GP-12K_40gsm-<br>300mm-ThinPreg135EP). The composite single layer is characterized by unidirectional reinforcement, thickness 0.04 mm. The manufacturing standard samples for strength tests in the autoclave process reduces to about 0.038 mm. </p>

First-passage probability estimation of high-dimensional nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems by a fractional moments-based mixture distribution approach
<p>First-passage probability estimation of high-dimensional nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems is a significant task to be solved in many science and engineering fields, but remains still an open challenge. The present paper develops a novel approach, termed ‘fractional moments-based mixture distribution’, to address such challenge. This approach is implemented by capturing the extreme value distribution (EVD) of the system response with the concepts of fractional<br> moment and mixture distribution. In our context, the fractional moment itself is by definition a high-dimensional integral with a complicated integrand. To efficiently compute the fractional moments, a parallel adaptive sampling scheme that allows for sample size extension is developed using the refined Latinized stratified sampling (RLSS). In this manner, both variance reduction and parallel computing are possible for evaluating the fractional moments. From the knowledge<br> of low-order fractional moments, the EVD of interest is then expected to be reconstructed. Based on introducing an extended inverse Gaussian distribution and a log extended skew-normal distribution, one flexible mixture distribution model is proposed, where its fractional moments are derived in analytic form. By fitting a set of fractional moments, the EVD can be recovered via the proposed mixture model. Accordingly, the first-passage probabilities under different<br> thresholds can be obtained from the recovered EVD straightforwardly. The performance of the proposed method is verified by three examples consisting of two test examples and one engineering problem.</p>
Nonlinear dynamic model and rollover threshold of a liquid tank semi-trailer
<p>A refined dynamic model of a tractor-semitrailer, including the nonlinear tire force and tank swing force, is established, and the fluid force and torque in the liquid tank are obtained through simulation by using the fluid mechanics software Fluent. Two kinds of tests, the tire corner stiffness test and tire roll stiffness test, are designed and performed using the KHAT flat bed test rig for tires, and a nonlinear model of the tire is obtained. The driving vehicle body state and handling stability of the liquid tank semi-trailer are studied through the model. The roll angle and lateral accelerationare used as the rollover characterization parameters. The dynamic lateral load transfer rate (LTR) is used as the rollover index to characterize the rollover threshold. The conclusions are of great significance for running status monitoring, rollover early warning and rollover avoidance controlfor liquid tank semi-trailers.</p>
Data from: Compensatory dynamics of lotic algae break down nonlinearly with increasing nutrient enrichment
<p>One important mechanism governing the temporal maintenance of biodiversity is asynchrony in cooccurring competitors due to fluctuating environments (i.e. compensatory dynamics). Temporal niche partitioning has evolved in response to predictable oscillations in environmental conditions so that species may offset competition, but we do not yet have a clear understanding of how novel anthropogenic stressors alter seasonal patterns of succession. Many primary producers are nutrient-limited, and enrichment may decrease the importance of environmental fluctuations that govern which species are effective competitors under naturally low nutrient regimes. Consequently, elevated nutrient concentrations may synchronize species responses to seasonality. By studying benthic algal assemblages over two years from 35 streams that spanned a wide gradient of nutrient enrichment, we found that compensatory dynamics characterizing seasonal succession under natural nutrient regimes broke down at relatively low levels of total phosphorus (P) enrichment (~ 25 μg L<sup>-1</sup>). With increasing P more species were able to coexist at any given time, and seasonal variation in assemblage composition was characterized by synchronous swings in species biovolumes. We also observed much higher instability in assemblage biovolumes with declines in compensatory dynamics, which indicates that anthropogenic alteration of nutrient regimes can affect community stability by changing the dominant mode of seasonal succession. Our findings indicate that compensatory fluctuations of stream algae are driven by seasonality, and provide insight about how nutrient enrichment alters evolved drivers of species coexistence.</p>
