Coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean simulation of Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Description

This dataset provides the output of the coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean simulation of Hurricane Dorian from August 29 to September 7, 2019. The simulation is a composite of two separate simulations:

From 00 UTC August 29 to 00 UTC September 1, 2019

From 00 UTC September 1 to 00 UTC September 7, 2019

The first simulation serves as "spin-up" for the hurricane and its environment prior to landfall. The second simulation is initialized from the output of the first simulation, while relocating the Dorian vortex to its correct position on September 1. Due to the size of the dataset only the surface fields are made available.

Model configuration

Atmosphere: Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF, https://github.com/wrf-model/WRF) model v4.2.2, with the Advanced Research WRF (ARW) dynamical core. Destructive potential of planetary meteotsunami waves: ATAL ocean model results

Based on the well-documented Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai volcano explosive eruption on 15 January 2022, we developed the "Atmospheric Tsunami Associated with Lamb waves" or ATAL ocean model and performed 12 realistic and process oriented numerical simulations to assess the sea-level hazards posed by planetary meteotsunami waves. Here, we provide the ATAL model results of maximum sea-levels during day 1 and day 2 after the eruption for:

- the baseline simulation: trying to reproduce the event as realistically as possible

- the 10 resonance simulations (_r_): trying to derive the speed of the Lamb waves which will generate the maximum resonance (i.e., Proudman resonance) in the ocean basins by dividing the baseline speed by r = 1.25, 1.40, 1.50, 1.60, 1.65, 1.75, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00. The full Proudman resonance was obtained for r = 1.50

- the amplification simulation (_amp_): trying to match the Proudman resonance amplification by multiplying by 10 the Lamb waves amplitudes

Global characterization of the ocean's internal gravity wave vertical wavenumber spectrum from Argo float profiles

Oceanic internal gravity wave energy levels E (m^2/s^2), vertical wavenumber spectral slopes s, and vertical wavenumber scale m* (1/m) estimated by fitting the Garrett Munk model vertical wavenumber shape function to strain spectra obtained from Argo float hydrographic profiles based on the finestructure method, as discussed in Pollmann (2020): "Global Characterization of the Ocean’s Internal Wave Spectrum" (Journal of Physical Oceanography 50.7: 1871-1891).
This dataset contains data from ROMS simulations near the U.S. West Coast with realistic atmospheric forcing, tidal forcing and remote internal wave forcing. FS800b has remote internal wave forcing while FS800a does not have remote internal wave forcing at the open boundaries. The ROMS simulations have 4-km horizontal resolution and 60 sigma-layers. All data is along the local x- and y- axis of the rotated C-grid. Data is stored in netcdf format. We also include the altimeter dataset (see Buijsman et al., 2020; doi: 10.1016/j.ocemod.2020.101656) used in validating the semidiurnal internal tides.

More details and context of this data can be found in the article: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2022.102154 . Dataset in support of "Laboratory wave and stress measurements quantify the aerodynamic sheltering in extreme winds" by Tan et al. (2023, JGR: Oceans)

Data introduction:

There are three datasets used in this research: dataset 1 from Wind-Only (WO) experiment, dataset 2 from JONSWAP experiment with 10-cm significant wave height (J10), and dataset 3 from monochromatic wave experiment with 7.5-cm amplitude (M7.5).

Each dataset contains quality-controlled data of the respective experiment mentioned above. The data files are in the mat (MATLAB) format. There are 9 mat files in each dataset, and each file represents data collected under a specific wind forcing condition, with the fan frequency in the 10-50 Hz range with 5 Hz interval.

Each file contains four variables: seg (water elevation time series collected by the wave-wire with the units of m, demeaned and detrended), U (along-tank, downwind component of wind sampled by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of m/s), V (cross-tank component of wind sampled by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of m/s), and W (vertical component of wind collected by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of m/s). All four variables were collected at a sampling frequency of 20 Hz.

Data for: Saturation of ocean surface wave slopes observed during hurricanes

Observational wave data and modeled wind data to accompany the article "Saturation of ocean surface wave slopes observed during hurricanes," which is currently in revision for publication in Geophysical Research Letters (a preprint is attached as a supplement). The observations include targeted aerial deployments into Hurricane Ian (2022) and opportunistic measurements from the free-drifting Sofar Ocean Spotter global network in Hurricane Fiona (2022). Surface wind speeds are modeled using the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System for Tropical Cyclones (COAMPS-TC). The datasets are table-like and include the following: 1) hourly records of surface wave statistics in the form of scalar energy spectra, directional moments, derived products (including mean square slope), and modeled wind speeds; 2) data to reproduce the binned mean square slopes and model wind speeds presented in the article; 3) data to reproduce the mean energy density versus wind speed plot; and 4) data to reproduce the mean energy density versus wave age plot.
