Hydroelastic response of the scaled model of a floating offshore wind turbine platform in waves: HELOFOW Project Database

This dataset contains the data measured during the HELOFOW model test campaign, performed at the Ocean and Hydrodynamic Engineering wave tank of Ecole Centrale Nantes (ECN): decay tests, regular wave tests and irregular waves tests. The preprocessed measured data is contained in MAT files.

The model, the measurements and the tests are described in the appended Excel files. A Matlab(R) function is given as a short example to show how the MAT files are structured and how data may be handled for a plot.

As stated in the reference paper (Leroy et al., Ocean Engineering, 2022):

"As the size of floating wind turbines continues to increase, floating platforms reach dimensions that make their elastic and hydro-elastic behaviour significant. Several works in connection with the numerical modelling of the elastic behaviour of these wind turbines have been carried out but few validation data are available. This study focuses on the hydro-elastic response of a large floating wind turbine, in regular waves and severe sea-states. A new experimental wind turbine model has been designed to represent a 1:40 Froude-scaled spar platform carrying the DTU 10 MW turbine. The main challenge is here to reproduce a 1st bending mode frequency and hydrodynamic loads representative of a realistic large floating wind turbine. The platform model is made of a flexible backbone, reproducing the correct flexibility, and light floaters fixed on it provide the correctly scaled geometry. This experimental model is tested in various conditions including regular waves of several periods and steepness, and irregular waves of various intensity, including extreme 50-year return period conditions."

This work was carried out within the framework of the WEAMEC, West Atlantic Marine Energy Community, and with funding from the Pays de la Loire Region and Europe (European Regional Development Fund).

HELOFOW project on the WEAMEC website.

The approach chosen to offer a viable and reliable solution for this application is based on the use of the well-known advantages of the GNSS system as the main driver for enhancing the accuracy of positioning. For this purpose, the data reported in this work are captured through a GNSS receiver operating over multiple frequency bands (L1, L2, L5) and combining signals from different constellations of navigation satellites (GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS), and they are processed through the precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques. Furthermore, aiming to improve global positioning, the processing unit fuses the results obtained with the data acquired through an inertial measurement unit (IMU), reaching final accuracy of a few centimeters. To validate the system designed and developed in this proposal, three different sets of tests were carried out in a (i) rotary table at the laboratory, (ii) GNSS simulator, and (iii) real conditions in an oceanic buoy at sea. The real-time positioning solution was compared to solutions obtained by post-processing techniques in these three scenarios and similar results were satisfactorily achieved.

Observed ocean surface albedo from a fixed offshore platform

The ocean surface albedo (OSA) is an important parameter in numerical ocean models and air‒sea heat flux calculations. Radiation observations were conducted to study the OSA in the northern South China Sea using a fixed offshore tower-based platform. The platform was located at 21.44° N, 111.39° E, with an average water depth of approximately 16 m. It consisted of a main tower and two auxiliary towers. The auxiliary towers were approximately 6 m from the main tower and their lower edges were approximately 6 m from the mean sea surface.

A four-component net radiometer (CNR4) was installed on the lower edge of the southeast auxiliary tower through a 2-m long boom to simultaneously measure the upward and downward broadband solar radiation having spectral bands between 305 and 2800 nm. A bottom-mounted Nortek acoustic Doppler current profiler was used to measure surface waves. Other ancillary meteorological instruments were used to measure meteorological parameters, including wind speed and water vapor pressure.

The observation period lasted from September 2017 to December 2018. The measured broadband radiation was collected in 30-min segments. To obtain an accurate and reliable radiation dataset, three specific types of data were removed from the dataset: (1) local afternoon data; (2) data with solar altitude angles < 10°; (3) data with downward solar radiation of < 30 W m−2. After this quality control, 2433 segments of data can be used to study the OSA.

Offshore platforms as novel ecosystems: a case study from Australia's Northwest Shelf

The decommissioning of offshore oil and gas platforms typically involves removing some or all of the associated infrastructure and the consequent destruction of the associated marine ecosystem that has developed over decades. There is increasing evidence of the important ecological role played by offshore platforms. Concepts such as novel ecosystems allow stakeholders to consider the ecological role played by each platform in the decommissioning process. This study focused on the Wandoo field in Northwest Australia as a case study for the application of the novel ecosystem concept to the decommissioning of offshore platforms. Stereo-baited remote underwater video systems were used to assess the habitat composition and fish communities at Wandoo, as well as two control sites: a sandy one that resembled the Wandoo site pre-installation, and one characterised by a natural reef as a control for natural hard substrate and vertical relief. We found denser macrobenthos habitat at the Wandoo site than at either of the control sites, which we attributed to the exclusion of seabed trawling around the Wandoo infrastructure. We also found that the demersal and pelagic taxonomic assemblages at Wandoo more closely resemble those at a natural reef than those which would likely have been present pre-installation, but these assemblages are still unique in a regional context. The demersal assemblage is characterised by reef-associated species with higher diversity than those at the sand control and natural reef control sites, with the pelagic community characterised by species associated with oil platforms in other regions. These findings suggest that a novel ecosystem has emerged in the Wandoo field. It is likely that many of the novel qualities of this ecosystem would be lost under decommissioning scenarios that involve partial or complete removal. This study provides an example for classifying offshore platforms as novel ecosystems.
