CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania
<p>Dataset linked to the manuscript "CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania", submitted to Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene.</p> <p>Abstract: Methane (CH4) emissions to the atmosphere from the oil and gas sector in Romania remain highly uncertain, despite their relevance for the European Union’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Measurements of the isotopic composition of CH4 can be used for source attribution, which is important in top-down studies of emissions from extended areas. We performed isotope measurements of CH4 in atmospheric air samples collected from an aircraft (24 locations) and ground vehicles (83 locations), around oil and gas production sites in Romania, with focus on the Romanian Plain. Ethane to methane ratios (C2:C1) were derived at 412 locations of the same fossil fuel activity clusters. The resulting isotopic signals (δ13C and δ2H in CH4) covered a wide range of values, indicating mainly thermogenic gas sources (associated with oil production) in the Romanian Plain, mostly in Prahova county (δ13C from -67.8 to -22.4 per mille V-PDB; δ2H from -255 to -138 per mille V-SMOW) but also the presence of some natural gas reservoirs of microbial origin in Dolj, Ialomia, Prahova and likely Teleorman counties. The classification based on C2:C1 ratios was generally in agreement with the one based on CH4 isotopic composition, and confirmed the characterisation of the gas origin. In several cases, the CH4 enhancements sampled from the aircraft could directly be linked to the underlying production clusters using wind data. The combination of δ13C and δ2H signals determined on these samples confirm that the oil and gas production sector is the main source of CH4 emissions in the target areas.</p>

Insecticidal activity of Lantana camara extract oil on controlling maize grain weevils
<p>Currently farmers are faced by serious post-harvest problems from weevils especially in storage of grains. When grains exposed to insects they become less marketable and loss quality of grain. In this study the insecticidal property of methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate extracted oil from Lantana Camara leaf for controlling of maize weevils, Sitophilus Zeamais were studied. Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to identify the chemical composition and Functional group of solvent extracted oil respectively. Adult weevil's repellency and mortality were studied by the effect of extract oil concentration at 0% (w/w), 2% (w/w), 3% (w/w), 5% (w/w), 7% (w/w), and 10% (w/w) to weight of grain maize and exposed days. Repellency effect was also conducted at 6, 12 and 24 h at different concentration oil. The number of weevil's death increases significantly as exposed time increases. The extracted oil by the three-solvent fraction had direct repellent and toxic effect to the weevil. From all treatment applied, extracted by methanol fraction had showed highest percentage mortality (74%). The lowest mortality rate was observed in ethyl acetate fraction oil (26%), at 2% (w/w) concentration. The effect of lantana Camara leaf powder and extracted oil on repellency and mortality was showed directly proportional to concentration dosage.</p>

Assessing the Impact of Supply-Side Policies on Oil Extraction, Health, and Employment in California
<p>California's ambitious goal to slash GHG emissions by 90% by 2045 marks a significant shift towards sustainability. Supply-side policies, such as Senate Bill 1137, which bans new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of sensitive areas, signal a commitment to environmental and public health protection. To gauge SB 1137's impact accurately, the existing model must be adapted to incorporate this setback distance. This capstone project aims to bridge this gap by updating the model and creating accessible educational materials for Californians. Objectives include updating the model, predicting well locations and oil extraction using machine learning, and developing a public online app with R Shiny. The MEDS capstone group will investigate the effects of the 3,200-foot setback distance on emissions, employment, and health, contributing to the evidence supporting SB 1137.</p>
