Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow regions of oil and gas platforms (SCUBA)
This dataset included fish counts that were surveyed in the shallow sections (0 – 40 meters) of the oil and gas platforms using Scuba. The oil and gas platforms are located in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. Each of the eleven platforms (GILDA, GINA, HOLLY, IRENE, HERMOSA, HIDALGO, GAIL, GRACE, HARVEST, C, and HENRY) were surveyed multiple times a year from 1995 to 2000. This scuba project was conducted and reported under a cooperative agreement (Agreement 1445-CA09-95-0836) between the U. S. Geological Survey (Biological Resources Division) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. This dataset is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, occurrence core). Characterising underwater noise and changes in harbour porpoise behaviour during the decommissioning of an oil and gas platform
<p>Many man-made marine structures (MMS) will have to be decommissioned in the coming decades. While studies on the impacts of the construction of MMS on marine mammals exist, no research has been done on the effects of their decommissioning. The complete removal of an oil and gas platform in Scotland in 2021 provided an opportunity to investigate the response of harbour porpoises to decommissioning. Arrays of broadband noise recorders and echolocation detectors were used to describe noise characteristics produced by decommissioning activities and assess porpoise behaviour. During decommissioning, sound pressure levels in the frequency range 100 Hz to 10 kHz were 30-40 dB higher than baseline, with the presence of vessels being the main source of noise. The study detected small-scale (< 2 km) and short-term levels of porpoise displacement during decommissioning, with porpoise occurrence increasing immediately after this. These findings can inform the consenting process of future decommissioning projects.</p>

Data to support manuscript: A Comparison of Two ROV Survey Methods Used to Estimate Fish Assemblages and Densities Around a California Oil Platform
This fish dataset was collected at platform Harmony, between Aug 25 and Aug 26, 2018. The ROV fish survey was done with two methods: industry (mimicking an inspection survey conducted for platform structural inspections) and biological method. Due to differences between the two methods in the positioning of the ROV vis a vis the jacket crossbeams, fish densities and diversities were different between the two methods at the platform bottom. This dataset provides fish counts and the relevant survey parameters (transect length and depth).

Santa Barbara Channel fish and invertebrate surveys at oil and gas platforms
Dataset contains occurrences of fish and invertebrates at nine oil and gas platforms between 1995 and 2011 in the southern California (Pt. Arguello to Long Beach). Observations were collected using a manned submersible at depths ranging from 29 – 224 meters (95 - 739 feet). Data are organized into two tables: (1) the fish count (1995-2000) and (2) the invertebrate count (1997-2011). Fish surveys were conducted primarily at nine Platforms (Irene, Hidalgo, Harvest, Hermosa, Holly, Gilda, Grace, Gina, Gail) in the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin. Invertebrate surveys were collected at these nine platforms plus Platform Edith, located off Long Beach (1998) and partial submersible surveys were completed around Platforms C, B, A, Hillhouse, Henry, Houchin, Hogan, and Habitat (2000). See additional methods under “Methods” and citations therein. The Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin are situated in a dynamic marine transition zone between the regional flow patterns of central and southern California. The Santa Barbara Channel is about 100 km long by about 50 km wide (60 x 20 miles) and is bordered on the south by the Northern Channel Islands (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa). The smaller Santa Maria Basin is located off Pt. Arguello to the northwest. The entire area is bathed in a complex hydrographic system of currents and water masses. The convergence of different water masses in the Santa Barbara Channel results in relatively large scale fluctuations in physical parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, oxygen, and nutrient concentrations) and biotic assemblages (e. g., flora and fauna).

Data from: Marine communities on oil platforms in Gabon, West Africa: high biodiversity oases in a low biodiversity environment
The marine biodiversity of Gabon, West Africa has not been well studied and is largely unknown. Our examination of marine communities associated with oil platforms in Gabon is the first scientific investigation of these structures and highlights the unique ecosystems associated with them. A number of species previously unknown to Gabonese waters were recorded during our surveys on these platforms. Clear distinctions in benthic communities were observed between older, larger platforms in the north and newer platforms to the south or closer to shore. The former were dominated by a solitary cup coral, Tubastraea sp., whereas the latter were dominated by the barnacle Megabalanus tintinnabulum, but with more diverse benthic assemblages compared to the northerly platforms. Previous work documented the presence of limited zooxanthellated scleractinian corals on natural rocky substrate in Gabon but none were recorded on platforms. Total estimated fish biomass on these platforms exceeded one ton at some locations and was dominated by barracuda (Sphyraena spp.), jacks (Carangids), and rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata). Thirty-four percent of fish species observed on these platforms are new records for Gabon and 6% are new to tropical West Africa. Fish assemblages closely associated with platforms had distinct amphi-Atlantic affinities and platforms likely extend the distribution of these species into coastal West Africa. At least one potential invasive species, the snowflake coral (Carijoa riisei), was observed on the platforms. Oil platforms may act as stepping stones, increasing regional biodiversity and production but they may also be vectors for invasive species. Gabon is a world leader in terrestrial conservation with a network of protected areas covering >10% of the country. Oil exploration and biodiversity conservation currently co-exist in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in Gabon. Efforts to increase marine protection in Gabon may benefit by including oil platforms in the marine protected area design process.
An Indo-Pacific damselfish on an oil-platform in the southwest Gulf of Mexico
<p>The damselfish <em>Neopomacentrus cyanomos</em> is a common fish on coral reefs throughout the Indo-west Pacific. This species, which is not native to the Atlantic, was first observed in the southwest Gulf of Mexico in 2013. Subsequent investigations show that it is widely distributed in that area. Current evidence supports the hypothesis that this species having been transported to the Gulf of Mexico by an offshore oil platform being relocated there from the Indo-Pacific. On inshore reefs in the Gulf of Mexico it is not particularly abundant. However, it is more common at Cayo Arcas, an offshore reef in the southwest corner of Campeche Bank, and superabundant on an oil-platform adjacent to that reef.
