Experimental data for 'Scaling laws for coastal overwash morphology'
<p>This dataset contains the experimental data described in Lazarus, ED (2016) Scaling laws for coastal overwash morphology, <em>Geophysical Research Letters</em>, 43, 12113–12119, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/2016GL071213">https://doi.org/10.1002/2016GL071213</a>.</p> <p>The physical experiments that produced these data were conducted at St Anthony Falls Laboratory (University of Minnesota, USA) in December 2014. The experiments were conducted in a 3 x 5 x 0.6 m tank filled with well-sorted coarse river sand. The tank and the experimental trials are detailed in Text S1 of the Supporting Information for Lazarus (2016): <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/action/downloadSupplement?doi=10.1002%2F2016GL071213&file=grl55284-sup-0001-SI.pdf">https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/action/downloadSupplement?doi=10.1002%2F2016GL071213&file=grl55284-sup-0001-SI.pdf</a></p> <p>This dataset consists of two *.csv files:</p> <ul> <li>'...THROATS.csv' – morphometric data for <strong>erosional</strong> (throat) features in the experimental barrier</li> <li>'...WASHOVER.csv' – morphometric data for <strong>depositional</strong> (washover) features on the back-barrier floodplain</li> </ul> <p>Both files have the same general column headings: feature width (in the alongshore dimension) [m], feature length (in the cross-shore dimension) [m], feature area [m<sup>2</sup>], feature volume [m<sup>3</sup>], alongshore spacing (centroid-to-centroid distance to neighbouring feature) [m], and real alongshore position [m].</p> <p>All features were formed along an initially geometrically uniform (topographically homogenous) trapezoidal barrier under inundation-type forcing (denoted in 'forcing' column). These data report the compiled results of three experimental trials (denoted in 'trial' column).</p> <p>Note that these data are also available as part of the Supporting Information for Lazarus (2016), but the format in which they were originally uploaded is not conducive to straightforward integration into open-source analysis. Publishing them here, in this tidier format, is an effort to rectify that.</p>
High-frequency observations of overwash water and bed elevations from five MeOw (Measuring Overwash) stations: Smith Island, VA, August-November 2019
Water and bed surface elevation measurements from five MeOw (Measuring Overwash) stations installed on Smith Island, VA, from 21 August 2019 to 22 November 2019. The five MeOw stations consist of one ultrasonic distance sensor inside a stilling well to measure water levels, and a second attached to an arm extending outwards from the well to measure the elevation of the sediment surface (when dry) or the water surface (when inundated). Note: Station MeOw2 was damaged and produced no data, and so is not included in this dataset.
Dune Overwash and Breaching data set produced at the CIEM flume, Hydralab III
<p>The data set here presented helps to to improve the understanding of dune overwash and breaching processes during storm surges in nearly prototype scale. The experiments were done at the CIEM wave flume at UPC, Barcelona, as part of Hydralab III. The large scale movable-bed hydraulic experiments measure hydrodynamics and sediment processes involved in onshore and offshore sediment transport, dune breaching and overwash.</p> <p>Due to its size, the data set can not be placed on this repository and will be provided on demand. The columns are: map: base map number (i.e., the map number that Dolan/Hayden used for their rectangular blocks of coastline) trans: transect number from south to north for that map The remaining columns refer to a point on the transect at which there is a transition between vegetation communities (as defined by McCaffrey and digitized by LTER): utm1: first utm co-ord for transition point utm2: second utm co-ord for transition point unit: unit number for the vegetation community type that we are moving INTO. We are moving along the transect from the sea side to the mainland side of the island. The unit numbers are the numbers that you used when digitizing the map. For example, note that the first observation for every transect has unit number 7 since this is the number for sand. Editors note: Vegetation unit number refers to the mapping units used by McCaffrey, C.A. and R.D. Dueser. 1990. Plant associations on the Virginia Barrier Islands. HOLOCENE OVERWASH OCCURRENCE AGE IN THE ISUMI RIVER LOWLAND, EASTERN BOSO PENINSULA, JAPAN
<p>Analysis of the chronological data and observation of a lagoonal sediment core reveal sand washover events between around 2.4 to 2.5 cal. ky BP in the Isumi River lowland. We conducted radiocarbon dating with AMS and constructed an age-depth model using the latest calibration curve and appropriate model routine. In the middle to lower part of the core, dark-gray sand layers are repeatedly deposited. Sand layers may exhibit an erosional surface at the base with fining upward grading. The overwash layers are composed of well-rounded sand with occasional gravel, indicative of transportation. overwash sediment characteristics are consistent with proximal marine deposits, suggesting an ocean origin (though riverine sediment is also similar in character). The age-depth model indicates very high sediment accumulation rates associated with overwash deposits. Based on the amount of accumulated sediment, relatively large scale redeposition events occurred during this period but more information is needed to constrain the mechanism(s) causing the events. We also present a local reservoir age correction compatible with the Marine20 calibration curve.</p>
