Processed Net N2 Flux and Nitrous Oxide Production Rates from a mesocosm experiment, North River, MA, 2022
The data documented here show nitrogen cycling rates (net N2 flux and net N2O flux) from a tidal, freshwater wetland under two stressors in isolation and in combination over two different disturbance regimes. We used intact core mesocosms to examine how nitrogen cycling changed in response to increased temperature and salinity under pulse and press disturbances. We found that net N2 flux rates, defined as the balance between nitrogen fixation and denitrification did not directionally change in response to stressor pulse or press. Instead, it became more variable under both disturbance regimes. Nitrous oxide production rates, however, decreased and became more stable over time in the press scenario, but remained highly variable in the pulse scenario. These findings provide valuable knowledge on the functional potential of the nitrogen cycling microbial communities in tidal, freshwater wetlands when facing future climate variability.
Identification of factors determining the process of aggregation/agglomeration of metal oxide nanoparticles in a biological medium

The model allows to identify factors determining the process of aggregation/agglomeration of metal oxide nanoparticles in a biological medium and to verify the importance of ion adsorption and protein adsorption in this process.

Model confirms the significant effect of protein adsorption on the hydrodynamic diameter of metal oxide particles in the biological medium, and does not confirm the significant effect of ion adsorption in this process. It’s an example of modeling the properties of nanoparticles, where apart from the descriptors describing the structure of nanoparticles, there are also parameters characterizing the medium.

Isotopic and GDGTs analysis of methane-related biological processes (methane production and oxidation) in a Miocene sedimentary pool

Methane is one of the most important greenhouse gases. A substantial proportion of this gas originates from marine environments where both its biological formation and oxidation occur. Variations in seawater properties due to climatic perturbations are likely to be reflected in the living conditions of both methanotrophic and methanogenic microbiota. The debate about the fate of the marine methane cycle facing global change may benefit from the inclusion of data concerning marine palaeoenvironments, especially salt-bearing sediments, which are a relic of the evaporitic sea. The study presents a GDGT-derived palaeorecord of methane-related biological processes in Miocene Wieliczka Formation sediments (a remnant of the Paratethys sea) as well as a description of present-day microbial communities subsisting in evaporates using activity measurements and high throughput sequencing. The results revealed that GDGT-based indices corresponded with the reconstructed sedimentary conditions and microbial ecophysiology which confirms their applicability of reconstruction for biological methane formation and oxidation in saline environments.

The magnetic recording stability of vortex state irregularly shaped natural iron oxides: raw data, processing and micromagnetic modelling results

Magnetic minerals, especially those existing within the vortex domain state, serve as the primary natural archives of ancient magnetic fields. In this investigation, we introduce an innovative method to examine the magnetic stability of remanence-bearing minerals. This method involves integrating Synchrotron-based Ptychographic X-ray Computed Nano-tomography (PXCT) with micromagnetic modelling. PXCT, a tomographic technique, is a non-destructive resource, which enables its application to valuable (unique) samples. When applied to a microscopic sample of weakly magnetic carbonate rock, PXCT revealed numerous nanoscopic grains of magnetite/maghemite, each exhibiting diverse morphologies, alongside various non-magnetic minerals present in the rock matrix. Subsequently, micromagnetic models were employed to predict the properties of these grains and investigate the potential impacts of irregular morphologies.

A statistical method to optimize the chemical etching process of Zinc Oxide thin films

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is an attractive material for micro and nanoscale devices. Its desirable semiconductor, piezoelectric, and optical properties make it useful in applications ranging from microphones to missile warning systems to biometric sensors. This work introduces a demonstration of blending statistics and chemical etching of thin films to identify the dominant factors, and interaction between factors, and develop statistically enhanced models on etch rate and selectivity of ZnO thin films. Over other mineral acids, ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) solutions have commonly been used to wet etch microscale ZnO devices because of their controllable etch rate and near-linear behavior. Etchant concentration and temperature were found to have a significant effect on etch rate. Moreover, this is the first demonstration that has identified multifactor interactions between temperature and concentration and between temperature and agitation. A linear model was developed relating etch rate and its variance against these significant factors and multifactor interactions. An average selectivity of 73:1 was measured with none of the experimental factors having a significant effect on the selectivity. This statistical study captures the significant variance observed by other researchers. Furthermore, it enables statistically enhanced microfabrication processes for other materials.
