Diurnal Patterns of Cavitation in Red Maple, Paper Birch and White Ash at Harvard Forest 2011-2012
Previous work at Harvard Forest has suggested that woody plants cavitate and re-dissolve embolisms in xylem on a daily basis. Here we investigated the common assumption that severing stems and petioles under water preserves the hydraulic continuity in the xylem conduits opened by the cut when the xylem is under tension. In red maple and white ash, higher PLC in the afternoon occurred when the measurement segment was excised under water at native xylem tensions, but not when xylem tensions were relaxed prior to sample excision. Bench drying vulnerability curves in which measurement samples were excised at native versus relaxed tensions showed a dramatic effect of cutting under tension in red maple, a moderate effect in sugar maple, and no effect in paper birch. These results suggest that sampling methods can generate PLC patterns indicative of repair under tension by inducing a degree of embolism that is itself a function of xylem tensions at the moment of sample excision.
Site Location and Environmental Characteristics for 83 Locations of 6-163 Years Old Black Spruce, Alaska Paper Birch, and Aspen Stands Accoss Interior Alaska. Sampled in 2008-2010 and 2013-2015.
This dataset contains the GPS location, slope, orientation, elevation, forest type based on dominant tree biomass, Age, sampling year, total vascular cover, total lchen cover, deciduous index (Alexander et al. 2012, Ecosphere), basal area of black spruce, Alaska paper birch, trembling aspen, large deciduous shrubs and trembling aspen, organic layer depth, pH, heatload, approximated moisture class for all sites (Johnstone et al. 2008), gravimetric moisture content, and volumetric moisture content. This dataset was part of the site-level covariates used in a study of bryophyte post-fire succession in deciduous and coniferous successional trajectories. NOTE: there is some overlap between the >20 years old sites that were sampled by Heather Alexander with some of the data she submitted in relation to her 2012 Ecosphere paper.
Vegetation Data Collected with Point Frame for 83 Locations of 6-163 Years Old Black Spruce, Alaska Paper Birch, and Aspen Stands Across Interior Alaska. Sampled in 2008-2010 and 2013-2015.
This dataset contains point frame data for vegetation less than 1.3 m, including vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, leaf litter and bare ground, as well as species codes used, as described in Jean et al. 2017 Canadian Journal of Forest Research. Samples of all encountered unknown species were collected for identification in the lab. Bryophyte nomenclature followed Anderson et al. (1990).
Bryophyte Cover Summary Data for 83 Locations of 6-163 Years Old Black Spruce, Alaska Paper Birch, and Aspen Stands Across Interior Alaska. Sampled in 2008-2010 and 2013-2015.
This dataset contains the summarized bryophyte (percent cover) data obtained from point frame measurements, as used in Jean et al. 2017 Canadian Journal of Forest Research. ?Samples of all encountered unknown species were collected for identification in the lab. Bryophyte nomenclature followed Anderson et al. (1990).
Alaska paper birch NPP per tree calculated from dendrometer bands annually from 1994 to 2008
This data set is derived from BNZ LTER inventory plots, where band dendrometers are in place on trees within each diameter size class (typically 10 trees per 10 cm increment diameter size class). Dendrometer bands are read in the fall each year. Biomass is calculated from allometric equations, from which annual biomass increments are derived. Data are reported as the average annual growth per tree across all trees within a given landscape and successional stage and reported as kg biomass/tree/year.
Alaskan paper birch tree diameter vs age in mid-successional and late-successional long-term Bonanza Creek LTER inventory plots
This data lists age and diameter for Alaskan paper birch trees of varying diameters growing in mid- and late-successional long-term BNZ LTER inventory plots in upland and floodplain landscapes.
Tree-Ring Data for Co-Occurring White Spruce and Paper Birch at an Intermediate Aged Stand in the Bonanza Creek LTER Regional Site Network - 2018
This dataset contains tree ring widths of co-occurring white spruce and Alaska paper birch. The data were published as part of a 2021 article in Journal of Ecology.
Measurements of 10 year old Alaskan paper birch saplings before and one-year after exposed to varying intensities of leaf stripping
This dataset contains woody, leaf, and resin gland measurements of Alaskan paper birch saplings before and one-year after a leaf stripping experiment. Saplings were all growing in the Boundary fire (within CPCRW and the rocket range) and thus 10 years old.
Murphy Dome: Moss-associated N-fixation measurements in a moss transplant and leaf litter manipulation experiment in black spruce and paper birch stands
This dataset contains nitrogen fixation measurements from the moss transplant experiment in the state forest on Murphy Dome (Cache Creek Road). Fixation rates were measured in August 2015 in two moss species: Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi in black spruce and paper birch stands and associated with leaf litter manipulations.
Sap Flux and Microclimate Data for Co-Occurring White Spruce and Paper Birch at an Intermediate Aged Stand in the Bonanza Creek LTER Regional Site Network 2013-2018
This dataset contains hourly mean sap flux density and microclimate data for co-occurring white spruce and Alaska paper birch from early June of 2013 to mid-September of 2018. The data were published as part of a 2021 article in Journal of Ecology.
