The influence of boating noise on the parental care behaviors of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) during the summer of 2024 at Douglas Lake, Michigan, USA.

Anthropogenic noise is on the increase and in aquatic systems one of the major sources of noise is boat traffic. For organisms in lakes, rivers, and oceans that are capable of hearing, anthropogenic noise may alter behavior in a number of different ways. Here we did a combination of field and experimental work by locating smallmouth bass nests that were actively being guarded by males. Using an underwater drone, we monitored nest guarding behavior before and after a boat ran by the nest. In addition, we monitored behavior during this period while simultaneously recording boat motor noise. The results showed that the sequence of behavior performed by bass was altered during and after the boat ran by the nest.

Dataset of The latent factor structure and assessment of childbirth-related PTSD in fathers and co-parents: psychometric characteristics of the City Birth Trauma Scale – French version (partner version)

<p>Little is known about the latent factor structure of CB-PTSD symptoms in co-parents (i.e.,&nbsp;(a non-expecting mother or father). The City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) was developed to assess childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder following childbirth (CB-PTSD), based on the PTSD criteria of the DSM-5. Still, no validated French questionnaire exists to assess&nbsp;CB-PTSD symptoms in co-parents. This study aimed (1) to establish the latent factor structure of CB-PTSD, and (2) to validate the French version of the City BiTS (partner version).&nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset contains data on the mental health (i.e., CB-PTSD, depression, anxiety) of 282 co-parents who had an infant within the last 12 months. Sociodemographic data such as age,&nbsp;marital status, educational level, weeks of gestation, type of delivery, history of traumatic childbirth, or history of a traumatic event is available.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Comparing effects of auditory and visual disturbances on smallmouth bass parental care behaviors during the summer of 2025 at Douglas Lake, Michigan, USA

A prevalent source of sensory pollution within aquatic systems is recreational motorboats that can impact aquatic organisms through several exposure mechanisms. Auditory and visual sensory disturbances are particularly important as fish may utilize these cues during critical reproductive behaviors such as parental care. Here, we conducted a field study in Douglas Lake, Michigan, and located wild smallouth bass nests actively guarded by males. We exposed smallmouth bass to two sequential treatments of playback auditory noise and visual disturbances. Using an underwater drone, parental care behaviors of smallmouth bass were monitored before, during, and after both auditory and visual disturbances. The results show that auditory and visual disturbances may alter smallmouth bass parental care behaviors differently.

SSR genotypes of oak parents and progeny in Pentalofos Forest Greece

<p>Two files (datasets) with multi-locus genotypes at 17 nuclear microsatellites; one containing the genotypes of all 59 adult trees within a mixed oak forest stand in the Pentalofod Forest in Evros County in Greece and the other the genotypes of 110 juvenile trees in&nbsp;the same stand. <div> <div> <div> <div>Early and prolonged parent-child separation due to parental migration or immigration may result in attachment disruption that can threaten the long-term mental health and functioning of affected children, and these risks can persist following reunification and through adulthood. Although sending infants back to the home country for rearing is often practiced among <em>Chinese</em>&nbsp;immigrants, especially low-income families, research has been sparse in understanding the long-term impact of early and prolonged parent-child separation and reunification on disparities in mental health and functioning among separated-reunited children and the mechanism through which such relationships may operate.</div> <div>Funded by&nbsp;National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMH), we collected semi-structured interview data from 24 parent-child dyads who have experienced separation. Data from: Telomere heritability and parental age at conception effects in a wild avian population

<p>Individual variation in telomere length is predictive of health and mortality risk across a range of species. However, the relative influence of environmental and genetic variation on individual telomere length in wild populations remains poorly understood. Heritability of telomere length has primarily been calculated using parent–offspring regression which can be confounded by shared environments. To control for confounding variables, quantitative genetic 'animal models' can be used, but few studies have applied animal models in wild populations. Furthermore, parental age at conception may also influence offspring telomere length, but most studies have been cross-sectional. We investigated within- and between- parental age at conception effects and heritability of telomere length in the Seychelles warbler using measures from birds caught over 20 years and a multi-generational pedigree. We found a weak negative within-paternal age at conception effect (as fathers aged, their offspring had shorter telomeres) and a weak positive between-maternal age at conception effect (females that survived to older ages had offspring with longer telomeres). Animal models provided evidence that heritability and evolvability of telomere length was low in this population, and that variation in telomere length was not driven by early-life effects of hatch period or parental identities. qPCR plate had a large influence on telomere length variation and not accounting for it in the models would have underestimated heritability. Our study illustrates the need to include and account for technical variation in order to accurately estimate heritability, as well as other environmental effects, on telomere length in natural populations. </p>
