Physico-chemical properties of Saharan dust samples deposited across Europe in March 2022 and collected through a participatory approach
<p>A particularly long and dense episode of airborne dust transport crossed Spain, France and part of Europe from 15 to 18 March 2022. This episode led to significant dust deposits on cars, roofs, etc., which may have caused surprise or concern among the general public. Based on association reports, several media published articles stating that this dust contained an artificial radionuclide, cesium-137 (<sup>137</sup>Cs), the source of which was attributed to the French nuclear tests conducted in the Sahara early in the 1960s.</p> <p>In order to provide a solid and representative scientific basis for a better characterisation of this dust and its radionuclide content, a participatory call for the collection of about ten grams of dust in different sites in France and Europe was launched on 17 March 2022 on the social network Twitter by Olivier Evrard. It was then relayed by Germán Orizaola, generating numerous reactions and the collection of several dozen samples in France, Spain and other neighbouring countries in Europe.</p> <p>The current dataset provides general information about the location/time of sample collection (<em>n</em>=110 samples) and data about the content of dust samples in cesium-137 (<sup>137</sup>Cs), an artificial radionuclide emitted by nuclear atmospheric tests and accidents (Evrard et al., 2020). Samples (2-80g) were analysed using the ultra-low background Germanium HyperPure gamma spectrometry detectors of LSCE installed in the underground facilities at both University Paris-Saclay (Gif-sur-Yvette) and Modane (Underground Lab of Modane, France). Filters were analysed for 80,000 to 200,000 s to obtain sufficient counting statistics (for the detection of the <sup>137</sup>Cs peak at 662 keV). All results were expressed in Bq kg<sup>−1</sup> with activities decay-corrected to the sampling date. Counting efficiencies and reliability were conducted using certified International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards (IAEA-444, 135, 375, RGU-1 and RGTh-1) prepared in the same containers as the samples.</p> <p>Additional data regarding other physico-chemical properties analysed in these dust samples has been added in June 2024.</p>
Formalizing Objectives and Criteria for Urban Agriculture Sustainability with a Participatory Approach
<p>The last few years have seen an exponential development of urban agriculture projects within global North countries, especially professional intra-urban farms which are professional forms of agriculture located within densely settled areas of city. Such projects aim to cope with the challenge of sustainable urban development and today the sustainability of the projects is questioned. To date, no set of criteria has been designed to specifically assess the environmental, social and economic sustainability of these farms at the farm scale. Our study aims to identify sustainability objectives and criteria applicable to professional intra-urban farms. It relies on a participatory approach involving various stakeholders of the French urban agriculture sector comprising an initial focus group, online surveys and interviews. We obtained a set of six objectives related to environmental impacts, link to the city, economic and ethical meaning, food and environmental education, consumer/producer connection and socio-territorial services. In addition, 21 criteria split between agro-environmental, socio-territorial and economic dimensions were identified to reach these objectives. Overall, agro-environmental and socio-territorial criteria were assessed as more important than economic criteria, whereas food production was not mentioned. Differences were identified between urban farmers and decision makers, highlighting that decision makers were more focused on projects' external sustainability. They also pay attention to the urban farmer agricultural background, suggesting that they rely on urban farmers to ensure the internal sustainability of the farm. Based on our results, indicators could be designed to measure the sustainability criteria identified, and to allow the sustainability assessment of intra-urban farms.</p>
Data from: Using a participatory impact assessment framework to evaluate a community-led mangrove and fisheries conservation approach in West Kalimantan, Indonesia
<ol> <li>Community-based conservation (CBC) has been identified as a solution to biodiversity loss, climate change, and the reduction of rural poverty. The heterogeneity in social and economic inequalities often acts as a barrier to community engagement in resource management and further inhibits the distributional equity of social and ecological outcomes.</li> <li>This study presents a participatory impact assessment (PIA) framework that evaluated the outcomes of a cross-sector community-led conservation initiative. Community members involved in the program identified activities and outcomes for the Conservation Cooperative (CC), ranking the influence of the former on the latter as well as their daily life through multiple focus group discussions (FGDs). Participants were asked to rank the impact of activities on outcomes and the scale of the outcome which was totaled to identify the most impactful program activities and outcomes during the project period.</li> <li>Community members reported improved income, health, education and the creation of a locally-led natural resource management system. Members also reported improved crab harvest rates and reduced mangrove deforestation. Environmental outcomes identified by community members through the PIA were verified through a secondary spatial analysis and mud-crab independent fisheries monitoring.</li> <li>The results support the hypothesis that environmental NGOs need to consider a multi-dimensional view of human well-being, and that cross-sector integrated interventions may be effective at improving multiple outcomes.</li> <li>Future steps should focus on spatial replication of the CC program which will provide further insights by testing for differences in outcomes between villages, how those are impacted by preexisting social and ecological systems, and comparing outcomes between control sites that did not receive interventions.</li> </ol>
Data from: A place-based participatory mapping approach for assessing cultural ecosystem services in urban green space
1. Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) encompass a range of social, cultural and health benefits to local communities, for example recreation, spirituality, a sense of place and local identity. However, these complex and place-specific CES are often overlooked in rapid land management decisions and assessed using broad, top–down approaches. 2. We use the Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment (TESSA) to examine a novel approach to rapid assessment of local CES provision using inductive, participatory methods. We combined free-listing and participatory geographic information systems (GIS) techniques to quantify and map perceptions of current CES provision of an urban green space. The results were then statistically compared with those of a proposed alternative scenario with the aim to inform future decision-making. 3. By identifying changes in the spatial hotspots of CES in our study area, we revealed a spatially-specific shift toward positive sentiment regarding several CES under the alternative state with variance across demographic and stakeholder groups. Response aggregations in areas of proposed development reveal previously unknown stakeholder preferences to local decision-makers and highlight potential trade-offs for conservation management. Free-listed responses revealed deeper insight into personal opinion and context. 4. This work serves as a useful case study on how the perceptions and opinions of local people regarding local CES could be accounted for in the future planning of an urban greenspace and how thorough analysis of CES provision is important to fully-inform local-scale conservation and planning for the mutual benefit of local communities and nature.
Data from: A trait‒environment relationship approach to participatory plant breeding for organic agriculture
<p>The extent of intraspecific variation in trait‒environment relationships is an open question with limited empirical support in crops. In organic agriculture, with high environmental heterogeneity, this knowledge could guide breeding programs to optimize crop attributes. We propose a three-dimensional framework involving crop performance, crop traits, and environmental axes to uncover the multidimensionality of trait‒environment relationships within a crop. </p> <p>We modeled instantaneous photosynthesis (<em>A</em><sub>sat</sub>) and water-use efficiency (WUE) as functions of four phenotypic traits, three soil variables, five carrot (<em>D. carota</em>) varieties, and their interactions in a national participatory plant breeding program involving a suite of farms across Canada. We used these interactions to describe the resulting 12 trait‒environment relationships across varieties. </p> <p>We found one significant trait‒environment relationship for <em>A</em><sub>sat</sub> (taproot tissue density‒soil phosphorus), which was consistent across varieties. For WUE, we found that three relationships (petiole diameter‒soil nitrogen, petiole diameter‒soil phosphorus, and leaf area‒soil phosphorus) varied significantly across varieties. As a result, WUE was maximized by different combinations of trait values and soil conditions depending on the variety. </p> <p>Our three-dimensional framework supports the identification of functional traits behind the differential responses of crop varieties to environmental variation and thus guides breeding programs to optimize crop attributes from an eco-evolutionary perspective. </p>
