PARAGON 1 - KM2112 - Particulate Carbon and Nitrogen Timecourse Incubations

<p>This dataset contains measurements of particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations collected during the PARAGON 1 expedition (KM2112) in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Measurements come from time-course incubation experiments initiated with whole seawater collected at 150 m using trace metal clean techniques and modified with various additions of organic carbon, iron, and/or nitrogen. Samples for measurements of particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations were collected at multiple time points for each experimental biological replicate by filtering 4 L of seawater from polycarbonate incubation bottles onto pre-combusted 25 mm glass fiber filters (GF/F, Whatman) under positive pressure. Filters were then transferred to polystyrene Petri dishes lined with pre-combusted aluminum foil and stored at -20&deg;C until analysis onshore. Filters were then analyzed by high temperature combustion using an Exeter CE-440 Elemental Analyzer according to Grabowski et al. (2019). Particulate carbon concentrations are measurements of total particulate carbon, including both organic and inorganic carbon. Timestamp is in UTC.</p>

Vertical fluxes of particulate carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus from a sediment trap deployed west of Palmer Station, Antarctica at a depth of 170 meters, 1992-2019.

Particulate organic matter is exported from the upper ocean euphotic zone in the form of large sinking particles and as dissolved material. Particle fluxes to depth link the surface and mesopelagic realm and supply food to the benthos. Sedimentation flux is typically measured with sediment traps of various designs. Palmer LTER has deployed a time-series trap near 64.5degrees S, 66.0degrees W since late 1992. The trap is moored in 300 m depth and collects sinking particles at 150 m. Deployments and analyses were performed by David Karl, University of Hawaii until 2002 when Hugh Ducklow took over the sediment trap operations.Sedimentation at the PAL site of the West Antarctic Peninsula demonstrates extreme seasonality, with a well-defined pulse in the Austral summer following sea ice retreat. Daily sedimentation rates during the summer flux event are among the highest recorded globally. During the Austral winter when the ocean is covered by sea ice and shrouded in darkness, fluxes are among the lowest observed anywhere. Sedimentation rates at PAL typically vary by 4 orders of magnitude. There is also order of magnitude variability in the total annual flux (area under the curve).

Total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon in surficial sediment and settling particulate material from Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs in 2019 and 2021

This dataset includes measurements of sediment properties (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon) in surficial sediment and sedimenting material from two reservoirs: Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs, both located in Vinton, VA, USA. To measure surficial sediment properties, sediment cores were collected at the deepest site in each reservoir using a gravity corer, and the top 1 cm was frozen then lyophilized. Sediment cores were collected approximately once per month in both reservoirs throughout the stratified period (May–November) in 2019 and 2021, though sampling frequency and duration varied by reservoir and year. Sedimenting material was sampled using sediment traps suspended approximately 1 m above the sediment in both reservoirs. Iron-bound organic carbon was measured using the citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite method, and we used a CN analyzer (Elementar VarioMax, Ronkonkoma, NY, USA) to determine the amount of OC per unit mass of sediment.

Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements at selected depths in the water column in the CCE region since 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).

Water column bottle samples at multiple depths are taken during CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) at various CTD stations, filtered, and stored at -20°C. Measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) are performed onshore in the lab where samples are acidified, dried and analyzed by high-temperature combustion. The sample and tin capsule react with oxygen and combust at 1000°C, and the sample is broken down, thus converting organic carbon to CO2 and reducing nitrogen oxides to N2 gas. Both gases are measured by thermal conductivity. Samples analyzed within the CCE constrain the mean C:N ratio of small particulates and by difference relative to measured living biomass, the biomass of suspended detritus.

Exported particulate carbon and nitrogen measurements from 4-day sediment trap deployments in the CCE region, 2007 - 2019 (ongoing).

Sediment traps are used to measure particulate export flux of organic matter from the euphotic zone at various depths (up to 100), so to better understand what flows through the water column regarding food chains in the CCE. Tubes are filled with dense seawater to create a density gradient, and are attached to a wire connected to a drifting float for up to 4 days. Samples from the recovered array of the trap material (fecal matter and other sinking particles - zooplankton removed) are filtered onto precombusted filters for analyses of particulate carbon and nitrogen flux rates for each cycle in the CCE Process cruises (since 2007, ongoing)

Fluxes of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and mass from the Station M abyssal time series in the northeast Pacific, (1989-2022)

<p>Overview:</p> <p>This dataset provides particulate fluxes to Station M in the NE Pacific, from 1989 to 2022.&nbsp; Samples were collected with McLane Parflux sequencing sediment traps deployed on moorings. Data are provided for traps 50 m above bottom and 600 m above bottom, with deployment bottom depths ranging from approximately 3900 m to 4500 m. &nbsp;Gaps reflect lapses in funding, weather disruptions, clogs in sediment traps, or the occasional spilled sample. &nbsp;Where available, GPS coordinates and ship-recorded bottom depth at deployment location are given. Where these are not available, approximate location and depth are given and noted.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>This program used McLane Parflux sequencing sediment traps. Attempts to avoid sediment trap clogs, which increasingly became an issue, included replacing manufacture-supplied plastic funnels with Teflon-coated fiberglass funnels (October 2014), doubling the size of sediment trap collection cups (from 250 ML to 500 ML starting in October 2014), and adding a function that periodically agitated material in the funnel constriction (starting in June 2015).</p> <p>Before deployment, sediment trap cups were acid-washed and filled with a preservative (mercuric chloride from 1989 to 2009, 3%&ndash;5% buffered formalin from 2009 to 2022). Formalin brine recipe followed that recommended by McLane. Following sample recovery, zooplankton that many have swum into the traps were identified visually and manually removed (KLS). Samples were returned to the lab, freeze-dried, and weighed to calculate mass flux. The freeze-dried sample was analyzed for inorganic carbon content using a coulometer (UIC), and total carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen using an elemental analyzer (Perkin-Elmer or Exeter Analytical, University of California Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute Analytical Laboratory). Dry mass was corrected for salt content using a AgNO3&nbsp;titration (<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0967064519302395#bib99">Strickland and Parsons, 1972</a>). Data [mass flux, particulate organic carbon flux, and total nitrogen flux] from the 600 mab trap were used. Gaps in this data set were infilled using the linear relationship between data from the 600 mab and 50 mab traps. Full details of these methods can be found in Baldwin et&nbsp;al.&nbsp;(<a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022GL101018#grl65243-bib-0002">1998</a>).</p> <p>Data provided have been quality-controlled, and only usable data are included here.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>References:</p> <p>Baldwin, R. McMurdo Dry Valleys Lake Bonney Autonomous Lake Profiler and Samplers (ALPS): Particulate Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Concentrations

Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate carbon and nitrogen found at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.

Total Particulate Carbon and Nitrogen Concentration from R/V Melville MV1015 in the S. Pacific from Arica, Chile to Easter Island, 2010 (C-MORE project)

<p>&quot; The South East Pacific (SEP) is characterized by very high nutrient concentrations in the waters adjacent to the Chilean coast, but very low nutrient concentrations (oligotrophic) in the mid- South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG), near Easter Island. The steep gradient in nutrient concentrations across the region affects the level of marine production, the composition of the microbial community, and the operation of major biogeochemical cycles in ways that are not fully understood. Despite the remarkable diversity of trophic conditions, strong gradients and even some unique singularities, the SEP is still the most sparsely sampled oceanic region of the global ocean from hydrodynamic, biological and biogeochemical points of view. The SPSG is also the most oligotrophic of all sub-tropical gyres. Previous expeditions and remote sensing studies have described the nutrient and chlorophyll field, but there have been few simultaneous measurements of chemical properties with microbial community structure and function. This expedition is designed to investigate the impact of elemental nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, silicon, carbon) ratios on marine productivity and microbial community composition. Samples for PC (particulate carbon) and PN (particulate nitrogen) were collected on a combusted 25mm glass fiber filter (GF/F) and stored in a -80 freezer until analysis. Samples were further analyzed using a Carlo Erba NA 1500 Elemental Analyzer.&quot; Time is in GMT. Note: it is questionable if the 500m sample collected on 2010-11-27 was really taken at 500m (see comment on data sheet). This &ldquo;best guess&rdquo; for depth was included in the data for CMAP visualization purposes.</p> <p>This description has been reproduced using the following source:<br> &nbsp;<br> http://dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org/jg/info/BCO-DMO/CMORE/bigrapa/PCPN%7Bdir=dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org:80/jg/dir,data=dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org:80/jg/serv/BCO-DMO/CMORE/bigrapa/PCPN.html1%7D?</p>
