Carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotope compositions from particulate organic matter samples from lagoon, river, and open ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing
Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods, and analyzed for particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) content and stable isotopic composition.
Particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen concentrations and stable isotope composition of seawater sampled during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the Austral Summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen concentrations and stable isotope composition (delta 13C and delta 15N) sampled during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) Leg 1-3. Water samples were collected from the underway seawater supply every 3 hours, filtered onto pre-combusted glass fibre filters, acidified to remove inorganic compounds and analysed for both elements on the same filter using an elemental analyser. These samples provide an estimate of the organic carbon and organic nitrogen concentration and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope composition of living and detrital particles > 0.7 micrometres in size.</p> <p><strong>Dataset contents</strong></p> <ul> <li>README.txt, metatdata, text</li> <li>data_file_header.txt, metadata, text</li> <li>ace_uw_poc_pon_blanks_20200512CURRSGCMR.csv, data file, comma-separated values</li> <li>ace_uw_poc_pon_20200512CURRSGCMR.csv, data file, comma-separated values</li> </ul>
Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) from Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017
Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen are measured from discrete bottle samples collected during CTD-rosette casts on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017). Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were filtered and collected on combusted glass fiber filters, pelletized using ultra clean tin disks, and combusted using a Flash EA1112 CHN analyzer to calculate concentrations of particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen in micromoles per liter. Values are also reported as concentrations in micrograms per liter and carbon to nitrogen molar ratio.
Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) concentrations in discrete water column samples collected from lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2024, ongoing)
An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This dataset addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) found at specific depths in lakes across the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.
Total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon in surficial sediment and settling particulate material from Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs in 2019 and 2021
This dataset includes measurements of sediment properties (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon) in surficial sediment and sedimenting material from two reservoirs: Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs, both located in Vinton, VA, USA. To measure surficial sediment properties, sediment cores were collected at the deepest site in each reservoir using a gravity corer, and the top 1 cm was frozen then lyophilized. Sediment cores were collected approximately once per month in both reservoirs throughout the stratified period (May–November) in 2019 and 2021, though sampling frequency and duration varied by reservoir and year. Sedimenting material was sampled using sediment traps suspended approximately 1 m above the sediment in both reservoirs. Iron-bound organic carbon was measured using the citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite method, and we used a CN analyzer (Elementar VarioMax, Ronkonkoma, NY, USA) to determine the amount of OC per unit mass of sediment.
Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements at selected depths in the water column in the CCE region since 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
Water column bottle samples at multiple depths are taken during CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) at various CTD stations, filtered, and stored at -20°C. Measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) are performed onshore in the lab where samples are acidified, dried and analyzed by high-temperature combustion. The sample and tin capsule react with oxygen and combust at 1000°C, and the sample is broken down, thus converting organic carbon to CO2 and reducing nitrogen oxides to N2 gas. Both gases are measured by thermal conductivity. Samples analyzed within the CCE constrain the mean C:N ratio of small particulates and by difference relative to measured living biomass, the biomass of suspended detritus.

Fluxes of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and mass from the Station M abyssal time series in the northeast Pacific, (1989-2022)
<p>Overview:</p> <p>This dataset provides particulate fluxes to Station M in the NE Pacific, from 1989 to 2022. Samples were collected with McLane Parflux sequencing sediment traps deployed on moorings. Data are provided for traps 50 m above bottom and 600 m above bottom, with deployment bottom depths ranging from approximately 3900 m to 4500 m. Gaps reflect lapses in funding, weather disruptions, clogs in sediment traps, or the occasional spilled sample. Where available, GPS coordinates and ship-recorded bottom depth at deployment location are given. Where these are not available, approximate location and depth are given and noted.</p> <p> </p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>This program used McLane Parflux sequencing sediment traps. Attempts to avoid sediment trap clogs, which increasingly became an issue, included replacing manufacture-supplied plastic funnels with Teflon-coated fiberglass funnels (October 2014), doubling the size of sediment trap collection cups (from 250 ML to 500 ML starting in October 2014), and adding a function that periodically agitated material in the funnel constriction (starting in June 2015).</p> <p>Before deployment, sediment trap cups were acid-washed and filled with a preservative (mercuric chloride from 1989 to 2009, 3%–5% buffered formalin from 2009 to 2022). Formalin brine recipe followed that recommended by McLane. Following sample recovery, zooplankton that many have swum into the traps were identified visually and manually removed (KLS). Samples were returned to the lab, freeze-dried, and weighed to calculate mass flux. The freeze-dried sample was analyzed for inorganic carbon content using a coulometer (UIC), and total carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen using an elemental analyzer (Perkin-Elmer or Exeter Analytical, University of California Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute Analytical Laboratory). Dry mass was corrected for salt content using a AgNO3 titration (<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0967064519302395#bib99">Strickland and Parsons, 1972</a>). Data [mass flux, particulate organic carbon flux, and total nitrogen flux] from the 600 mab trap were used. Gaps in this data set were infilled using the linear relationship between data from the 600 mab and 50 mab traps. Full details of these methods can be found in Baldwin et al. (<a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022GL101018#grl65243-bib-0002">1998</a>).</p> <p>Data provided have been quality-controlled, and only usable data are included here.</p> <p> </p> <p>References:</p> <p>Baldwin, R. Meta-analytical data on soil organic, particulate organic, and mineral-associated organic carbon under nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased precipitation, drought, and their combined effects
Data were harvested from journal articles found on the Web of Science Core Collection and the ProQuest Agricultural and Environmental Database that studied soil organic matter fraction carbon responses to global changes (nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased and decreased precipitation, and combined effects). Soil organic carbon fractions were designated as particulate organic carbon or mineral-associated organic carbon based on size and density cutoffs. Relevant metadata, including article information (authors, publication year), environmental information (soil type, climate, and land use), and experiment information (rates, methods) were also added to the dataset.
McMurdo Dry Valleys Lake Bonney Autonomous Lake Profiler and Samplers (ALPS): Particulate Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Concentrations
Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate carbon and nitrogen found at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.

Bulk and amino acid nitrogen specific isotope data from particulate organic matter and mesozooplankton (1000-2000 µm) from the Mekong River plume and southern South China Sea
<p><strong><span><span>The mean trophic position (TP) of mesozooplankton largely determines how much mass and energy is available for higher trophic levels like fish. Unfortunately, the ratio of herbivores to carnivores in mesozooplankton is difficult to identify in field samples. Here we investigated changes in the mean TP of mesozooplankton in a highly dynamic environment encompassing four distinct habitats in </span></span></strong>the southern South China Sea:<strong> </strong><span>the </span>Mekong River plume, coastal upwelling region, shelf waters, and offshore oceanic waters<strong><span>. </span></strong><span>We used a set of parameters derived from bulk and amino acid nitrogen stable isotopes from particulate organic matter (POM) and four mesozooplankton size fractions to identify changes in the nitrogen source and structure of the planktonic food web across these habitats.</span> We found clear indications of a shift in N sources for biological production from nitrate in near-coastal waters towards an increase in diazotroph-N inputs in oceanic waters where diazotrophs shaped the phytoplankton community. The shift in N source was accompanied by a lengthening of the food chain (increase in the TP), which may provide further support for the connection between diazotrophy and the indirect routing of N through the marine food web. Our combined bulk and amino acid δ15N approach also allowed us to estimate the trophic enrichment (TE) of mesozooplankton across the entire regional ecosystem. When put in the context of literature values, our high TE of 5.1‰ suggested a link between ecosystem heterogeneity and the less efficient transfer of mass and energy across trophic levels.</p>

Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements from Go-Flo bottles sampling the water column from a zodiac during Palmer LTER station seasons at Palmer Station Antarctica, 1991 - 2012.
All organisms are composed of organic matter. Organic matter is synthesized from dissolved inorganic carbon (dissolved CO2) and inorganic nutrients by phytoplankton photosynthesis, and consumed (oxidized) by respiration by heterotrophs (zooplankton and bacteria). The organic matter in seawater is a variable mixture of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM). Typically DOM predominates over POM by an order of magnitude, but the relative amount of POM can be highly enhanced during large phytoplankton blooms. The principal elemental components of POM include organic carbon (POC), organic nitrogen (PN), there is no particulate inorganic N) and phosphorus (POP). These elements exist in a relatively stable, characteristic ratio of 106:6:1 (C:N:P) in seawater, known as the Redfield Ratio. Marine particulate matter is a complex mixture of live and dead plankton and detritus, and of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. POC and PN are enhanced in the euphoric zone, reflecting their origin by photosynthesis. The particulate pool is also a complex assemblage of particles of different sizes, shapes and densities. A simplified scheme divides the particles into large, rapidly sinking particles (10s - 100s of meters per day) and smaller, suspended particles. The transition between small particles and dissolved organic matter is typically specified by filtration through GF/F filters. POC and PN are analyzed for all samples in the upper 50 meters at Palmer Station B (75 m depth) and the upper 65 m at Station E (200 m depth). There is a gradient of POM from higher values inshore to much lower values in deep ocean water beyond the continental shelf break (sampled on the annual cruise).
