Regional Conservation Partnerships in New England 2009-2012
Across New England, a new model of regional collaboration is increasingly being used by land conservation trusts, watershed associations, state agencies and others. Regional conservation partnerships (RCPs) serve multiple purposes, such as coordinating among the various active groups in the region and allowing them to leverage funding and staff capacity. However, their essential missions are the same--protect more land from development. We use interviews, geographic information systems (GIS), and statistical analysis on 20 case studies to document RCP growth and characteristics and to analyze which attributes most contribute to their ability to conserve land. Along with well-known factors of organizational development, we find that the RCPs that match the size of the partnership region with the territory and capacity of the host partner organization are better able to achieve measurable conservation gains.
Jewish Business Partnerships (JeBuPa)
<p><span><span>Räume bzw. Orte mit ausgeprägter jüdischer Siedlungskonzentration, die sich im frühneuzeitlichen Reich oft in Gebieten erkennen lassen, die von kleinräumigen und ungeschlossenen territorialen Verhältnissen geprägt waren. Das DFG-Projekt Fraktalität und die Dynamiken jüdischer Lebensformen im Süden des Alten Reiches geht von der Annahme aus, dass diese spezifischen Strukturen für die Existenz von Juden verantwortlich waren und danach befragt, wie die jüdischen Akteure diese zu nutzen wussten. Im Projekt wurde dieses Konzept mit den Methoden der Netzwerkanalyse verbunden, woraus sich Möglichkeiten ergaben, die Kategorie des Raums sozialgeschichtlich für die jüdische Geschichte fruchtbar zu machen sowie die territorialpolitische Komplexität jüdischer Siedlungsräume in ihrer Wirkung und Bedeutung erstmals umfassend zu beschreiben und zu erklären. Derart komplexe politische Strukturen kommen in besonderer Weise Akteuren entgegen, die es gewohnt waren, in multipolaren Netzwerken zu agieren, wie es für weite Teile der jüdischen Bevölkerung der Vormoderne nachweislich ist. Im Projekt Religiöse Differenz und wirtschaftliche Kooperation. Christlich-jüdische Geschäftsbeziehungen wurden nachgewiesen, dass es eine deutlich engere Zusammenarbeit dieser beiden Religionsgruppen im wirtschaftlichen Bereich als bisher angenommen hat. </span></span><br><span><span>Um diese Netzwerke offenzulegen, wurden im Rahmen der an der KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt laufenden DFG-Projekte zwei relationale Datenbanken erstellt, die ab jetzt online zur Verfügung stehen. Improved database of public-private partnerships from World Bank with imputed economic, institutional and conflict data.
<p>The <a href="https://ppi.worldbank.org/en/ppi">World Bank's database</a> on private participation in infrastructure (PPI) projects provides detailed information on these initiatives. However, the original dataset includes imputed macro-level data for the countries that is outdated, lacks assigned ISO country codes, and is not linked to other standard country-level variables necessary for proper analysis and control by territory. In the improved version of the database, 10,958 project observations from 1900 to 2021 have been supplemented with ISO 2 and 3 country codes, enabling accurate integration with other databases. Additionally, 49 new variables related to <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/?cid=ECR_GA_worldbank_EN_EXTP_search&s_kwcid=AL!18468!3!704632427243!b!!g!!world%20bank%20projects&gad_source=1">economic</a>, <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/worldwide-governance-indicators">institutional</a>, and <a href="https://www.start.umd.edu/gtd/">conflict data</a> are incorporated by country and year. This enhanced database ensures that researchers can retain critical World Bank information that might otherwise be lost in future updates, as it is not always preserved in repositories</p>

MERICS China Podcast: Finding a European answer to the China-Russia partnership, with Alice Ekman and Helena Legarda
<p>Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing on May 15 and 16 to meet with China’s leader Xi Jinping. This will be his first foreign trip after his reinauguration on May 7. The meeting will be another chance for the two leaders to emphasize how important and close the “no limits” partnership of Russia and China is. In this episode of the MERICS China Podcast, we look at the implications of the Sino-Russian relationship for the European Union, in particular due the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and their opposition to and undermining of the existing global order.</p> <p><strong>Johannes Heller-John</strong> is joined by <strong>Alice Ekman</strong>, Senior Analyst in charge of the Asia portfolio at the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris and <strong>Helena Legarda</strong>, Lead Analyst at MERICS. Interpreting the mammal deposits of Cloggs Cave (SE Australia), GunaiKurnai Aboriginal Country, through community-led partnership research
<p>Palaeontological animal bone deposits are rarely investigated through research partnerships where the local First Nations communities have a defining hand in both the research questions asked and the research processes. Here we report research undertaken through such a partnership approach at the iconic archaeological site of Cloggs Cave (GunaiKurnai Country, East Gippsland), in the southern foothills of SE Australia's Great Dividing Range.</p> <p>A new excavation was combined with detailed chronometric dating, high-resolution 3D mapping, and geomorphological studies. This allowed for the interpretation of a sequence of stratigraphic layers spanning from a lowermost excavated mixed layer dated to between 25,640–48,470 cal BP, to a dense set of uppermost, ash layers dated to between 1460–3360 cal BP. This long and well-dated chronostratigraphic sequence enabled temporal trends in the abundant small mammal remains to be examined.</p> <p>The fossil assemblage consists of at least 31 taxa of mammals which change in proportions through time. Despite clear evidence that the Old Ancestors repeatedly carried vegetation into the cave to fuel cool fires (no visible vegetation grows in Cloggs Cave), we observed little to no evidence of cooking fires or calcined bone, suggesting that people had little involvement with the accumulation of the faunal remains. Small mammal bones were most likely deposited in the cave by large disc-faced owls, <em>Tyto novaehollandae</em> (Masked Owl) or <em>Tyto tenebricosa</em> (Sooty Owl).</p> <p>Despite being well-dated and largely undisturbed, the Cloggs Cave assemblage does not appear to track known Late Quaternary environmental change. Instead, the complex geomorphology of the area fostered a vegetation mosaic that supported mammals with divergent habitat preferences. The faunal deposit suggests a local ancestral landscape characterised by a resilient mosaic of habitats that persisted over thousands of years, signaling that the Old Ancestors burned landscape fires to encourage and manage patches of different vegetation types and ages within and through periods of climate change.</p>

Data - Sow what you sell: strategies for integrating organic breeding and seed production into value chain partnerships
<p>Online survey targeting organic farmers on organic seed use; 25 questions in the survey. The survey was conducted between November 2018 and June 2019 and distributed through the networks of partners involved in the Horizon2020 project LIVESEED, including 23 breeding & research institutes, seven breeding companies, eight seed companies, and 11 organic associations. 752 complete entries by farmers from 20 countries from Central, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe could be used from the 1,475 total accesses to the survey.</p>
Woodland expansion in the presence of deer: 30 years of evidence from the Cairngorms Connect landscape restoration partnership
<ol> <li>Restoring native woodlands to areas where they have been lost is a key element for tackling the nature and climate crises. Natural regeneration offers the potential to achieve this cheaply and at scale, but browsing ungulates like deer can inhibit this or alter the pattern of regeneration. This issue is particularly pronounced in the Scottish Highlands, a heavily deforested region with high deer numbers.</li> <li>We describe the work of the 600 km<sup>2</sup> landscape restoration partnership, Cairngorms Connect, in speeding up natural woodland expansion. We use 30 years of regeneration monitoring to show a consistent, large-scale expansion of native woodland, largely through natural regeneration alongside deer culling, without the use of fences. This was achieved across the partnership, despite differing management histories and land-managing organisations (comprising two statutory agencies, one private landowner and one non-governmental organisation).</li> <li>During peak periods of woodland expansion, the area of new woodland (i.e. exceeding 100 trees per hectare) increased by 1.2%, 1.7%, 2.7% and 6.0% annually in the four landholdings' regeneration zones, equating to a total of approximately 164 ha annually of new woodland.</li> <li>Natural regeneration is however patchy and hard to predict. Higher levels of management intervention may be needed to increase species that are rarer, more palatable or further from seed sources; we recommend long-term field trials to inform this, such as those underway in Cairngorms Connect. Further research should develop techniques for remote-sensing of woodland expansion, verified against field data, combined with development of process-based models to enable us to predict the outcomes of different management scenarios.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications:</em> We show that collaborative deer management across multiple adjoining landholdings can achieve rapid landscape-scale native woodland expansion with minimal need for planting or fencing. Our results show the power of monitoring regeneration directly, to inform deer management for an area. We demonstrate that by uniting over a shared vision, organisations with differing management approaches and histories can build understanding alongside landscape-scale ecological restoration.</li> </ol>
