Long-term soil properties after different biochar feedstock treatments in a Southwest Virginia Pasture, 2024

Biochar is an agricultural amendment that can improve soil health and promote carbon (C) sequestration. Effects of biochar can vary and depend on the biochar feedstock, method of production, soil conditions, and amendment method and frequency. These data include soil physicochemical properties from plots amended with hay, softwood, and hardwood biochar types produced under similar conditions (479°C – 522°C for 3.5-10.2 hours) with and without a nitrogen addition (porcine blood meal) in a randomized complete block design after 4.5 years. Plots were first established at the Virginia Tech Catawba Sustainability Center in Catawba, VA in June of 2019 and sampled in March 2024. Soil measurements include total nitrogen, total carbon, carbon:nitrogen ratios, gravimetric moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NO3 and NH4), bulk density, and moisture from bulk density measurements. These data contribute to a long-term understanding of different biochar feedstock effects on Southwest Virginia pasture soils.

Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group T7.5 Derived semi-natural pastures and old fields

<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>T7.5 Derived semi-natural pastures and old fields</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>

PBG03 Disk pasture meter measurements to estimate plant standing biomass in the Patch-Burn Grazing experiment at Konza Prairie

"PBG" datasets are associated with a long-term, large-scale study that is addressing the effects of fire-grazing interactions in the context of a Patch-Burn Grazing management system designed to promote grassland heterogeneity. Effects of patch-burn grazing management on plant and animal diversity and the nature and variety of wildlife habitat are being assessed in two replicate management units, each consisting of three pastures (watersheds) designated C03A/C03B/C03C and C3SA/C3SB/C3SC. In each patch-burn grazing unit, one watershed is burned and two that are left unburned in a given year. The burning treatments are rotated annually so that each pasture is burned every third year. Each patch-burn grazing unit is paired with an annually-burned pasture for comparison with traditional grazing systems (C01A and C1SB). All grazing units are stocked with cow/calf pairs from approximately 1 May until 1 Oct at a stocking density equal to 3.2 ha per cow/calf. To examine the impact of patch burning and grazing in all 8 units, we monitor changes in plant species composition, residual biomass, grassland bird populations, insect populations, small mammal populations, soil nutrients, and stream water quality1 (1C3SA/C3SB/C3SC unit only). The KSU Department of Animal Science monitors cattle performance, including weight gain and body condition to assess the economic feasibility of using patch-burn management on a widespread basis. This dataset includes both the annual calibration data for the disk pasture meter measurements (PBG031) and the actual disk pasture meter measurements in the PBG experiment (PBG032). Measurements were taken at a total of 64 transects (8 watersheds x 4 sites per watershed x 2 pasture meter transects per site). Each cattle-grazed watershed (designated as of May 2011 C3A, C3B, C3C, and C1A) and the four Shane cattle-grazed watersheds (C1B, C3SA, C3SB, and C3SC) includes 4 plant composition sampling transects (A-D). Pasture meter measurements were taken alo

Earthworms in abandoned tropical pastures

Plant community succession alters the quantity and chemistry of organic inputs to soils. These differences in organic input may trigger changes in soil fertility and faunal activity. We examined earthworm density and community structure along a successional sequence of plant communities in abandoned tropical pastures in Puerto Rico. The chronological sequence of these plant communities were pasture, grass-vine-fern, shrub-small tree, and forest. Earthworm density was the highest in pasture (831 worms/m2 in top 0.25 m soil), decreased as secondary succession proceeded, and reached the lowest (32 worms/m2) in the forest. Whereas only soil feeding Pontoscolex corethrurus was present in the pasture and grass-vine-fern communities, both soil and litter feeding worm species were found in the shrub-small tree and forest communities. Ground litter biomass had a negative correlation with earthworm density. Soil water content differed slightly among the successional communities, but were unlikely to play an important role in triggering differences in worm density among these abandoned lands. Soil pH values did not differed along the successional changes. These results suggest that decrease in earthworm density and increase in worm community diversity during secondary succession may result from changes in the quantity and chemistry of organic inputs, rather than in soil properties. We conclude that successional development from grass-dominated pastures to woody species-dominated forests reduces earthworm density and diversifies worm community structure in humid tropical soils. Sabana pasture permanent plot vegetation sampling

Permanent plot data is expected to show these temporal patterns: (1) rapid increases in percent cover and tree stem density, and (2) rapid turnover from early to late successional plant species. Plant-plant competition should show quick increases in intensity with native grass species and exotic as top competitors. These may lead to exclusion of some trees common after landslide disturbance. Spatial patterns of invading trees should include edge effects due to dispersal limitation with clumping of bird-dispersed species before the first five years after cow exclusion. Because of intact soil and low vegetation in the pasture trees should grow, as measured by biomass(productivity), height, and basal diameter increases, significantly faster compared to colonization of landslides. Typically covers 50&mdash;75% of the area, with significant open ground (with or without herbaceous understory) between them, where shrub canopies are less than 10 meters in diameter, and tree cover is below 10%, meaning they do not form a continuous or semi-continuous canopy.</li> </ul> <p>The dataset is organized in 69 global mosaics (25 years for each time series) in COG (Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF) format, WGS84 Coordinate Systems (EPSG:4326) and pixel size equal to 0.00025 degrees, including:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Probabilities</strong>&nbsp;of cultivated grassland (values range from 0&ndash;100),</li> <li><strong>Probabilities</strong>&nbsp;of natural/semi-natural grassland (values range from 0&ndash;100), and</li> <li><strong>Probabilities</strong> of open shrubland (values range from 0&ndash;100), and</li> <li><strong>Dominant</strong> class (0-other land cover, 1-cultivated grassland and 2-natural/semi-natural grassland, 3-open shrubland).</li> </ul> <p>All raster files are in unsigned&nbsp;<code>8-bit integer format</code>&nbsp;and use&nbsp;<code>255</code>&nbsp;as no-data value (pixels ignored by prediction), following an specific naming convention:</p> <ol> <li>Project name: Global Pasture Watch (<code>gpw</code>)</li> <li>Class name: cultivated grassland (<code>cultiv.grassland</code>), natural/semi-natural grassland (<code>nat.semi.grassland</code>), open shrubland (<code>open.shrubland</code>) &nbsp;and dominant grassland (<code>grassland</code>)</li> <li>Procedure combination: Random Forest (<code>rf</code>), median filter (med.filt) and balanced threshold (<code>bthr</code>).</li> <li>Variable type: probability (<code>p</code>) and factor class (<code>c</code>)</li> <li>Spatial resolution: 30m</li> <li>Begin of time reference: date of first Landsat composite used by the modeling (<code>20240101</code>)</li> <li>End of time reference: date of last Landsat composite used by the modeling (<code>20241231</code>)</li> <li>Spatial extent: global (<code>go</code>)</li> <li>Coordinate system: World Geodetic System 1984, used in GPS (<code>epsg.4326</code>)</li> <li>Version: v2</li> </ol> <h3>Related resources</h3> <ul> <li><strong>Maps of dominant grassland:</strong><br><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15646181">2000-2002</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15644486"> 2003-2005</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15644623"> 2006-2008</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15647042"> 2009-2011</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15647681"> 2012-2014</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15648306"> 2015-2017</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15648551"> 2018-2020</a><a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15648751"> 2021-2023</a> <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15649332">2024</a></li> <li><strong>Probability maps of cultivated grassland:</strong><br><a href="https://zenodo.org/records/13890401/files/ggc-30m.csv?download=1">2000-2024 (All URLs)</a></li> <li><strong>Probability maps of natural/semi-natural grassland:</strong><br><a href="https://zenodo.org/records/13890401/files/ggc-30m.csv?download=1">2000-2024 (All URLs)</a></li> <li> <div><strong>Grassland reference samples based on VHR imagery (2000&ndash;2024):</strong><br><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15631655">GeoPackage files</a></div> </li> <li><strong>Global machine learning models (Random Forest):</strong><br><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13952806">Parquet and joblib python files</a></li> <li><strong>Reference sampling design derived by FSCV:</strong><br><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11391517">GeoPackage and raster files</a></li> <li><strong>Harmonized reference samples based on existing LULC dataset:</strong><br><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13951976">GeoPackage and raster files</a></li> <li><strong>Source code for reproducibility:<br></strong><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13952867">GitHub release</a><strong><br></strong></li> <li><strong>Mapping feedback tool:</strong><br><a href="https://geo-wiki.org">GeoWiki</a></li> <li><strong>Data catalogues:</strong><br><a href="https://stac.openlandmap.org/gpw_ggc-30m/collection.json?.language=en">OpenLandMap STAC</a> <a href="https://global-pasture-watch.projects.earthengine.app/view/ggc-30m">Google Earth Engine</a></li> </ul> <p><strong>Support</strong></p> <p>For questions of bugs/inconsistencies related to the dataset raise a GitHub issue in&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/wri/global-pasture-watch">https://github.com/wri/global-pasture-watch</a></p>

Jornada Experimental Range (USDA-ARS) monthly stocking data and pasture shape files from 1915 to 1952

This data package contains two types of data for the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) from 1915 to 1952: 1) shape files containing polygons and attribute tables that represent the pasture configurations on the Jornada Experimental Range and 2) monthly stocking data from these pastures. The livestock represented in the stocking data comprise cattle, horse, sheep, and goats. Grazing goats were infrequent and are grouped with sheep in the source data. As such for this data set, they are included in the sheep category. Stocking data are expressed in animal unit months (AUM), which is based on metabolic weight. This data package provides finer resolution AUM data than knb-lter-jrn.210412001, which presents the annual stocking data for the entire JER from 1916 to 2001. The stocking data in this package begins in June of 1915 and continues through December of 1952, the last year for which the researchers on this project have verified and digitized historical pasture configurations on the JER. https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-jrn&amp;identifier=210412001
