(PRE) Socio-economic and cultural dataset in relation to Persuasive Strategies to boost Energy Efficiency and in the UK, Spain, Greece and Austria
<p>The dataset has been created from obtaining answers from 303 participants of four different countries in the EU (the questionnaire can be studied in <strong>GreenSoul_Questionnaire.pdf</strong>). It is composed by several factors which are explained in different TXT files. All these factors are contained in a "<strong>all_code_final_zenodo.xlsx</strong>" along with their answers by participants. In the following a short descrition of each TXT which explian the dataset is provided.:</p> <p> * <strong>socio-economic_description_not_dependent_of_work</strong><br> - Contains all the information from participants which is irrespective of their current workplace. This file contains typical socio-demographic and cultural attributes from respondents.</p> <p> * <strong>socio-economic_description_dependent_of_work</strong><br> - Contains socio-economic and cultural information from participants which is relevant to the workplace in relation to energy efficient practices in such environment.</p> <p> * <strong>actions-at-work</strong><br> - Are a set of attributes which describe certain practices of employees in relation to energy efficiency.</p> <p> * <strong>persuasive_strategies</strong><br> - Explain the ratings from 1 to 5 that participants attributed to a set of persuasive strategies. <p>The dataset has been created from obtaining post-pilot answers from 106 participants of four different countries in the EU (the questionnaire can be studied in <strong>GreenSoul_Validation_Questionnaire-POST.pdf</strong>). It is composed by several factors which are explained in<strong> POST-coding.ods </strong>file. All these factors are contained in: "<strong>POST-results-socio-economic-model.ods</strong>" and "<strong>POST-results-treatments-evaluation.ods</strong>" along with their answers by participants.</p> <p>Finally, we provided a cleaned version of the dataset to study how can a researcher is able to forecast the ranking that a user will give to different persuasion strategies according to user profiles: "<strong>POST-results-ranking-model.ods</strong>"</p>

<p>Data sheet file for the paper: <em>Forbid/allow asymmetry in persuasion: The forbid frame decreases biased elaboration and increases attitude change</em></p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Three experiments were conducted to test how asking about forbidding vs. allowing of the attitude object affects attitude changes, cognitive responses, and the assessment of arguments about GMOs, euthanasia, and barbecuing in public places. Attitudes toward forbidding an object are more susceptible to change than attitudes toward allowing the same object (Experiments 2 and 3). Furthermore, the forbid frame reduces bias in the assessment of the presented arguments (Experiment 1), and may cause a person to be less sensitive to the quality of the presented arguments (Experiment 2). Moreover, the forbid frame leads to generating less biased cognitive responses than the allow frame, and the higher susceptibility to change of attitudes toward forbidding an object than allowing it is based on this decreased bias of the participants’ cognitive responses (Experiment 3). The results indicate the existence of a new effect – forbid vs. allow asymmetry in persuasion.</p>

<p>Data sheet file for the paper: <em>Forbid/allow asymmetry in persuasion: The forbid frame decreases biased elaboration and increases attitude change </em>(Social Psychology, 2022)</p> <p>Previous research showed that responses to questions about forbidding something differed from those to the seemingly equivalent questions about allowing the same object (forbid/allow asymmetry). We postulate that the effect of the forbid vs. allow framing may be also consequential for the processing of attitude related information and attitude change. The forbid frame (compared with the allow frame) may increase the impact of negative (vs. positive) arguments and/or reduce the impact of initial attitudes on the elaboration the presented information. To test these predictions we conducted three experiments (one preregistered, total N = 655). Participants were reading both pro and con arguments, differing in consistency with their initial attitudes, and concerning three different attitude objects: genetically modified organisms (GMOs), euthanasia, and barbecuing in public places. The results show that the forbid (vs. allow) frame decreases the tendency for generating thoughts prevailingly consistent with participants’ initial attitudes (Experiment 2). It also reduces bias in the evaluation and interpretation of the presented arguments and yields more similar assessments of arguments that are consistent and inconsistent with initial attitudes (Experiment 3). As a result, the attitudes are more susceptible to change within the forbid frame (they move more in the direction opposite to the initial attitude) than within the allow frame (Experiments 1-3). The results for the first time show the existence of forbid vs. allow asymmetry in persuasion. This effect has practical consequences, e.g. when designing referenda.</p>

Social representations and interface layout: a new way of enhancing persuasive technology applied to organ donation
<p>Although campaigns promoting organ donation have proved their effectiveness, increasing the number of people who explicitly agree to become donors is still difficult. Based on the social marketing notion of persuasive technology, we reasoned that it was timely to focus on the design of this persuasive technology and to analyze its contribution in particularly challenging contexts such as organ donation. More specifically, the originality of the present study lay in the way we linked the field of persuasive technology to the theory of social representations, and combined them with an analysis of the ergonomic aspects of interface layout. This study had two complementary goals. The first was to determine whether the sociocognitive salience of the central elements of social representations (i.e., the most frequent and important themes related to the subject—here, organ donation—for individuals), can be used to achieve persuasive outcomes. The second was to determine whether interface layout, in terms of information location and background characteristics (color and contrast), can strengthen the persuasive impact. University students (<em>N</em> > 200) were exposed to a computer screen displaying a message involving either central or peripheral elements of the social representations of organ donation (status), placed either in the middle or on one side of the screen (location), and shown against either a white or a blue background (background). Eye-tracking data were recorded, in addition to self-reported data. In line with the elaboration likelihood model, results showed that participants who were exposed to central (vs. peripheral) elements of the social representations of organ donation followed the central route in processing information. Moreover, they had stronger attitudes, and more of them stated that they were <em>actual</em> organ donors. Importantly, however, at least for some variables, these status-related effects were not independent of the interface layout. More specifically, the persuasive impact of the central elements was enhanced when the information was displayed in the middle (vs. the side) of the screen and when it was displayed on a white (vs. blue) background. We discuss the theoretical and practical issues raised by these results.</p> <p> </p>
