Room Temperature NIR Phosphorescence from C64 Nanographene Tetraimide by π-Stacking Complexation with Pt(II)Porphyrin
<p>Additional data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202406353">https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202406353</a>:</p> <p>Near Infrared (NIR) phosphorescence at room temperature is challenging to achieve for organic molecules due to a negligible spin-orbit coupling and a low energy gap leading to fast non-radiative transitions. Here, we show a supramolecular host–guest strategy to harvest the energy from the low-lying triplet state of C64 nanographene tetraimide <strong>1</strong>. 1H NMR and X-ray analysis confirmed the 1:2 stoichiometric binding of a Pt(II)porphyrin on the two π-surfaces of <strong>1</strong>. While the free <strong>1</strong> does not show emission in the NIR, the host–guest complex solution shows NIR phosphorescence at 77 K. Further, between 860–1100 nm room temperature NIR phosphorescence (<em>λ</em>max = 900 nm, <em>τ</em>avg = 142 µs) was observed for a solid-state sample drop-casted from a preformed complex in solution. Theoretical calculations reveal a non-zero spin-orbit coupling between isoenergetic S1 and T3 of π-stacked [<strong>1</strong>·Pt(II)porphyrin] complex. External heavy atom induced spin-orbit coupling along with rigidification and protection from oxygen in the solid state promotes both the intersystem crossing from the first excited singlet state into the triplet manifold and the NIR phosphorescence from the lowest triplet state of <strong>1</strong>.</p>
Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Cocrystals of Aromatic Bisimides and Triplet Sensitizer Pt(acac)2
<p>Additional data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.202412843">https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.202412843</a>:</p> <p>Four sterically shielded aromatic bisimides are synthesized and their ability to form cocrystals with the triplet sensitizer platinum(II) acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2) is investigated. Single crystals of the individual electron-deficient bisimides are studied first, two showing bright blue fluorescence with quantum yields up to 28%, while the other two barely emit at all. After successful cocrystallization of all four aromatic bisimides with the electron-rich Pt(II) complex, two different stoichiometries, either 1:1 or 1:2, are found in the crystalline solid state, whose absorbance and photoluminescence exhibit distinct bathochromic shifts. While two naphthalene bisimides show strong and long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with quantum yield up to over 50%, the other two aromatic bisimides show only minor photoluminescence at RT, but a bright low-temperature phosphorescence (LTP) at 80 K. Theoretical calculations reveal the importance of changing the magnetic quantum number <em>m</em> of the involved <em>d</em>-orbitals at the platinum center as well as the alignment of the Pt(II) center above an aromatic C-C bond for an efficient intersystem crossing in these systems.</p>
Vacuum-Sublimed Cocrystalline Thin Films of Naphthalene Bisimide and Pt(II) Complex for Phosphorescent Light-Emitting Diodes
<p>Additional data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/adom.202402117">https://doi.org/10.1002/adom.202402117</a>:</p> <p>Cocrystals employing small organic molecules with platinum(II)-complexes are known to exhibit organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). However, this desirable property was so far only demonstrated in the macroscopic 1:1 cocrystalline state, which limitsdevice applications outside of small single-crystal devices. Here, we show that vacuum cosublimed thin films of both components in various mixing ratios form layers with selfassembled small cocrystalline domains which exhibit RTP. This Pt(II) doping improved the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (ΦPL) of the now phosphorescence emitting 1,8:4,5-naphthalene bisimide (NBI) from below 0.1% to 9% in respective thin films. These doped layers were employed as active layers in light-emitting diodes to emit red electroluminescence (EL). Via time-resolved measurements the lifetime of the device EL was determined in accordance with the PL to be around 50 µs. Maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of over 0.2% with RTP emission signatures consistent with the PL of solution-grown cocrystals could be achieved.</p>
