Repeat overhead photographs of microplots in a cross-scale interactions experiment (CSIS) at Jornada Basin LTER, 2013-ongoing
This dataset contains archived overhead photos collected from microplots in a long-term experiment (2013-present) of cross-scale interactions (CSIs) at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Experimental treatments were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, and control without manipulations. Repeat, overhead (downward-looking) photographs of ten "microplots" in each plot were taken for estimation of litter, soil, and vegetation cover in the experimental treatment and control plots over time. Photographs have been rotated and then cropped to provide standardized areas for this analysis. The photographs are archived by year in Zip files. This study is ongoing and new photos will be added annually. Cover estimates derived from these photos are in EDI dataset knb-lter-jrn.210413005.

Carbon dioxide flux measurements and plot photographs from Arctic LTER Heath Tundra herbivore exclosures, Toolik Field Station, Alaska 2013
Ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) flux light response curves were measured from Arctic LTER heath tundra herbivore exclosures. Plot photographs were taken of each subplot using five consumer grade red, green and blue (RGB) wavelength camera. Structure from motion (SFM) photogrammetric method was then used to derive canopy structure. This file contains the CO2, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data and photographs for each plot.
Coptic Monastic Heritage Archive (CMHA): Photographic Dataset of Monastic Settlement in Wadi Naqqat, Egypt
<p>This dataset was created as part of the Coptic Monastic Heritage Archive (CMHA) at the University of Ljubljana. It includes data and photographs of 14 monastic heritage sites in Wadi Naqqat (Eastern Desert, Egypt). Wadi Naqqat is located approximately 35 miles (55 km) west of the Red Sea town of Hurghada, in the broader region of ancient Mons Porphyrites, and dates to between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.</p> <p>The data was gathered through ground assessments conducted between 2018 and 2019 as part of the project “Endangered Hermitages: Documenting Coptic Monastic Heritage in Middle Egypt and the Eastern Desert”, led by Dr. Jan Ciglenečki (University of Ljubljana) and funded by the Antiquities Endowment Fund (AEF) of the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE). Photographic documentation of the site was carried out by photographer Matjaž Kačičnik, using a 36-megapixel Nikon D810 digital camera, and by Dr. Jan Ciglenečki, using a 21-megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital camera. In 2024, this documentation was systematically integrated into the CMHA at the University of Ljubljana.</p> <p><span>The photographs include EXIF (GPS location, technical specs) and IPTC-IIM (e.g., Credits, Caption) and XMP metadata.</span></p>
Geothermal Surface Manifestation photographic dataset
<p>This is a zip file of Geothermal Surface Manifestation (GSM) photographic dataset. It contains 5,000 images, 500 images each type of eight types of GSMs. The eight types of GSMs are warm spring, hot spring, geyser, fumarole, mud pot, hydrothermal alteration, crater lake, and none GSM. These GSM images are used for training and testing a GoogLeNet model to perform recognition of GSMs. The overall accuracy of this model reaches about 90%.</p> <p>It includes eight folders after unzipping:<br> 1.WS-Warm spring, <br> 2.HS-Hot spring, <br> 3.FO-Fountain, <br> 4.FU-Fumarole, <br> 5.MP-Mud pot, <br> 6.HA-Hydrothermal alteration, <br> 7.CL-Crater lake,<br> 8.NG-No geothermal</p> <p>It is a benchmark dataset for a manuscript titled "Recognition of surface geothermal manifestations: a comparison of machine learning and deep learning" .</p>

Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Foliage Scans and Photographs
In the MELNHE project, we are conducting nutrient manipulations in three study sites in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire: Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and Jeffers Brook. We monitored foliar chemistry in 11 of our stands pre-treatment (2008-2010) and post-treatment (2014-2016 and 2021-22). In 2021-22 , we also measured specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, carbon isotope composition, and stomatal density. This dataset includes scans of the foliage sampled in 2021-22, used to measure leaf area, and photos of all foliage samples used for trait measurements and chemical analysis. RIGHTS UP - Photographs from the RIGHTS UP project (2018-2020) [Visual data]
<p>This visual data was collected as part of the project RIGHTS UP with the objective of exploring the emergence of social movements critical of mass tourism in Venice, Amsterdam and Barcelona. These images include diverse 'protests' against mass tourism in the aforementioned cities, as well as photographs of tourists at these 'travel destinations'. The images were produced with ethical and privacy concerns as a priority. The attached table provides detail on each individual file, with a short description of the image, the city where it was captured, and the date.</p> <p>The unedited images are in .JPG format and all of them were produced with a Nikon D90 camera. The raw files of these images could be requested to the author, when necessary.</p>
Light scattering photographic dataset of rocks
<p>This dataset comprises digital photographs taken at the Astrophysical Scattering Laboratory of the Department of Physics of the University of Helsinki, Finland. These photographs were taken in a darkened room, with targets illuminated by an Energetiq Laser-Driven Light Source (LDLD) EQ-77-QZ lamp module.</p> <p>We utilized three distinct stones borrowed from the 2024 course materials of the Geological Materials course at the University of Helsinki's Department of Geosciences and Geography. These stones vary in shape and reflectivity: one is regularly shaped with a smooth surface, another has an irregular shape but a smooth surface with high reflectivity, and the third is irregularly shaped with varying reflectivity across its surface. The stones were photographed from a distance of 230 cm at six different camera positions. At each camera position, the setting with the target was rotated. The images were gathered at 10-degree intervals, totaling 36 images for each stone at each camera position and 216 images per stone in total.</p> <p>The dataset consists of 648 unedited 16-bit Canon CR2 raw photos and the same 648 images cropped, color-graded, and processed into TIFF format. The TIFF data package is 625 MB, while the raw data package is 18.8 GB. Further details on data acquisition can be found in the accompanying PDF files.</p> <p>This dataset serves as a resource for testing and benchmarking various image processing and inverse method tasks, such as reconstructing object shapes using convolutional neural networks and inverse methods. It aims to aid researchers in image processing and related endeavors.</p> <p><em><strong>Please note: </strong></em>Depending on your graphics editor, the program might automatically apply an adjustment of saturation, brightness, and contrast to the raw CR2 photos. In this case, the desired outcome of only the target being illuminated in the photo will be lost. <p>The Dataset contains images derived from the Newspaper Navigator (news-navigator.labs.loc.gov/), a dataset of images drawn from the Library of Congress Chronicling America collection (<a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/">chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/</a>). </p> <blockquote> <p>[The Newspaper Navigator dataset] consists of extracted visual content for 16,358,041 historic newspaper pages in <em>Chronicling America</em>. Lubrang Brokpa Lexicon - photographs
<p>These sound files constitute the elicitation of the lexical entries of the Basic Word List in the Lubrang variety of Brokpa. Lubrang village is a recent (early 20th century) settlement of Brokpa speaker originating in Sakteng village of Bhutan. They left Bhutan due to its heavy taxation of the semi-nomadic Brokpa households and its anti-Gelukpa policies and settled in the then Tibetan-administered area on land belonging to the Khispi people of Lish village, to which they continue to pay an annual tax. Lubrang Brokpa should hence be close to Merak and Sakteng (Bhutan) Brokpa, and not so close to Nyukmadung and Senge Brokpa spoken closer by. Because of the speaker’s paternal background there may be some admixture with Dirang Tshangla.</p>
Dikhyang Bugun language data: photographs
<p>These sound files constitute the elicitation and the triple-repetition of the lexical entries of the Basic Word List in the Dikhyang variety of Bugun. Dikhyang village is a recent (1977) satellite settlement of Wanggo (‘Wangho’) village, via Rambung and Hemrai settlements. Wanggo is located on the other side of the ridge. The Bugun variety of Dikhyang should hence closely match the Bugun variety of Wanggo (e.g. ‘Wangho’ in Abraham et al. 2005).</p>
On-site Jomo Propitiation in Chug valley: photographs
<p>Both participants in this ritual are <em>bon-po</em>, practitioners of the traditional religious system in the Chug valley. Jomo Gamdong is the place on the west bank of the Chug river which is considered the <em>pho-bra</em><em>ṅ</em> ‘palace’ of <em>jo-mo u-si</em><em>ṅ bu-khrid</em>, one of the nine daughters of the female deity <em>jo-mo a-ni u-</em><em>ñi</em><em>ṅ</em>, located on the Bhutan-Arunachal border in Jomotsangkha block of Samdrup Jongkhar district in Bhutan. The peak of <em>jo-mo u-si</em><em>ṅ bu-khrid</em> is the westernmost peak in the north of the Chug valley (see figure1). Propitiation of the Jomo takes place on monthly basis at home. Only on rare occasions does the <em>bon-po</em> go to the Jomo Gamdong for the propitiation, typically once in a few years.</p> <p>The <em>phobrang</em> is located in a grove of oak trees starting from the large trees in figure5. The area is a collection of large rocks (see photographs). Each rock has a significance, of which little could be recorded (exceptions are the white female <em>naga</em> in figure2 and the servant of the Jomo in figure3). As the marking on the tree in figure4 shows, at the time of the visit many trees were about to be felled. Although the land is owned by individual households from Jagarbasti village in the Chug valley, the trees were felled by people from the neighbouring village of Lish Gonpatse (whether this is a case of illegal felling and encroachment as a result of the on-going land dispute between the two communities, or whether the owners from Jagarbasti sold the standing trees (with the land?) to the Lish Gonpatse people is not clear. Pawo of Pemakö - photographs
<p>This is a healing rite by the <em>dbaḥ-bo</em> (although this is a male term, she is not referred to by the female form <em>dpaḥ-mo</em>, although she is referred to with the female term <em>jo-mo</em> by the Tshangla speakers of the area) Tshewang Lhazom. She is a Khampa Tibetan lady who becomes ritually possessed by an unidentified deity and then obtains curative powers, both in identifying the cause of illness as well as curing it. In this case, the patient is suffering from leg pain. After the initial sequence (PAWO210113AV, PAWO210113BV), and the moment of possession (PAWO210113CV), the complaints of the patient are explained and the <em>dpaḥ-bo</em> gives her diagnosis (PAWO210113DV), after which various offerings are made (PAWO210113EV), and the <em>dpaḥ-bo</em> expels curative phlegm (PAWO210113FV). She then pastes this phlegm mixed with butter on the head of the patient and uses a broom made of a medicinal plant to splash boiling hot water from a cauldron in which three round rocks (a black one, a white one, and a multicoloured one) brought from the river bed near the pilgrimage site of Dewakota that were heated in the fire are placed (PAWO210113GV, PAWO210113HV). Other people suffering from some illness are also treated. She then provides further advice regarding cure (PAWO210113IV), and then concludes the session (PAWO210113JV, PAWO210113KV, PAWO210113LV, PAWO210113MV).</p>
