Grammatical category and the neural processing of phrases - EEG data

EEG data presented in the paper

Grammar, lexical category and the neural processing of phrases

Amelia Burroughs, Nina Kazanina, Conor Houghton

abstract:

The interlocking roles of lexical, syntactic and semantic processing in language comprehension has been the subject of longstanding debate. Recently, the cortical response to a frequency-tagged linguistic stimulus has been shown to track the rate of phrase and sentence, as well as syllable, presentation. This could be interpreted as evidence for the hierarchical processing of speech, or as a response to the repetition of grammatical category. To examine the extent to which hierarchical structure plays a role in language processing we record EEG from human participants as they listen to isochronous streams of monosyllabic words. Comparing responses to sequences in which grammatical category is strictly alternating and chosen such that two-word phrases can be grammatically constructed - cold food loud room - or is absent - rough give ill tell - showed cortical entrainment at the two-word phrase rate was only present in the grammatical condition. Thus, grammatical category repetition alone does not yield entertainment at higher level than a word. On the other hand, cortical entrainment was reduced for the mixed-phrase condition that contained two-word phrases but no grammatical category repetition - that word send less - which is not what would be expected if the measured entrainment reflected purely abstract hierarchical syntactic units. Our results support a model in which word-level grammatical category information is required to build larger units.

_______________________________

all the corresponding code is at

github.com/conorhoughton/NeuralProcessingOfPhrases

Adapting Phrase-based Machine Translation to Normalise Medical Terms in Social Media Messages

Data and supplementary information for the paper entitled "Adapting Phrase-based Machine Translation to Normalise Medical Terms in Social Media Messages" to be published at EMNLP 2015: Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing — September 17–21, 2015 — Lisboa, Portugal.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies have shown that health reports in social media, such as DailyStrength and Twitter, have potential for monitoring health conditions (e.g. adverse drug reactions, infectious diseases) in particular communities. However, in order for a machine to understand and make inferences on these health conditions, the ability to recognise when laymen's terms refer to a particular medical concept (i.e. text normalisation) is required. To achieve this, we propose to adapt an existing phrase-based machine translation (MT) technique and a vector representation of words to map between a social media phrase and a medical concept. We evaluate our proposed approach using a collection of phrases from tweets related to adverse drug reactions. Our experimental results show that the combination of a phrase-based MT technique and the similarity between word vector representations outperforms the baselines that apply only either of them by up to 55%.

Based and confused: Tracing the political connotations of a memetic phrase across the web

Datasets and details for the paper "Based and confused: Tracing the political connotations of a memetic phrase across the web"

Datasets

Datasets for the case study on the spread of the vernacular term "based" across 4chan/pol/, Reddit, and Twitter. Data was gathered in November 2021. All files are anonymised as much as possible. They contain:

Comments on 4chan and Reddit mentioning "based". False positives were filtered out until the precision was over 0.9. See filtering steps below.

Reddit: Comments mentioning "based" between 2010-01-01 and 2021-11-01. Collected via the Pushshift API. Data from deleted subreddits may be absent in their last month.

4chan/pol/: Posts and comments mentioning "based" between 2013-11-28 and 2021-11-01. Data derived from 4plebs and 4CAT.

Twitter data was not included for ethical reasons, but constitutes: Tweets mentioning "based" between 2010-01-01 and 2021-11-01. Collected via the Twitter v2 API. Retweets or promoted tweets not allowed.

Counts per day and month for the datasets above.

Sampled and annotated posts from three snapshots. Includes the 200 most-liked or highest-scoring posts from Twitter and Reddit, and a random sample for 4chan/pol/. The following time periods are incomplete or missing entirely:

15 - 16 April 2019

14 - 15 December 2019

3 - 10 December 2020

29 March 2021

10 - 12 April 2021

16 - 18 August 2021

11 October 2021

The 4plebs archive moreover only started in November 2013, meaning the first two years of /pol/’s existence are missing.

The data returned by the Pushshift API did not return posts for certain dates. We somewhat mitigated this by also retrieving data through the new Beta endpoint. However, the following time periods were still missing data:

1 - 30 September 2017

1 February - 31 March 2018

5 - 6 November 2020

23 March 2021 through 27 March 2021

10 - 13 April 2021

Filtering

Afterward initial data collection, we carried out several rounds of filtering to get rid of remaining false positives. For 4chan/pol/, we only needed to do this filtering once (attaining 0.95 precision), while for Twitter we carried out eight rounds (0.92 precision). For Reddit, we formulated nearly 500 exclusions but failed to generate a precision over 0.9. We thus had to do more rigorous filtering. We observed that longer comments were more likely to be false positives, so we removed all comments over 350 characters long. We settled on this number on the basis of our first sample; almost no true positives were over 350 characters long. Furthermore, we removed all comments except for those wherein based was used as a standalone word (thus excluding e.g. “plant-based”), at the start or end of a sentence, in capitals, or in conjunction with certain keywords or in certain phrases (e.g. “kinda based”). We also deleted posts by bot accounts by (rather crudely) removing posts of usernames including ‘bot’ or ‘auto’. This finally led to a precision of 0.9.

Filters used for the 4chan/pol/ data.

-based|location based

C-PHRASE Vectors

The C-PHRASE semantic vectors described in the following paper:

N.T. Pham, G. Kruszewski, A. Lazaridou, M. Baroni Jointly optimizing word representations for lexical and sentential tasks with the C-PHRASE model. Proceedings of ACL 2015 (53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics).

The vectors are the rows of a dense matrix stored in a text file using the tab-delimited format (the first element of each line corresponds to a word, followed by the values in the vector representing it). The text file is then compressed and split it into two files to make the download easier. Please download the following parts, and then concatenate them as shown below:

cphrase.txt.zip_aa

cphrase.txt.zip_ab

cat cphrase.txt.zip_* > cphrase.txt.zip

Abstractions and exemplars: the measure noun phrase alternation in German

This is the data set and scripts used in "Abstractions and exemplars: the measure noun phrase alternation in German" as accepted for publication in Cognitive Linguistics as of 29 may 2018.

In this paper, an alternation in German measure noun phrases is examined under a varying-abstraction perspective. In a specific measure NP construction, the embedded kind-denoting noun either agrees in case with the measure noun ("eine Tasse guter Kaffee" 'a cup of good coffee') or it stands in the genitive ("eine Tasse guten Kaffees"). Each of the two alternants is syntactically similar to a non-alternating construction. I propose a prototype model which assigns a common prototypical meaning to each of the alternants and its corresponding non-alternating construction. Based on this, I argue that lexical, morpho-syntactic, and stylistic features help to predict the choice of the alternant. A large corpus study is presented which supports this analysis. However, in addition to the prototype effects, an exemplar effect is also shown to influence the choice, namely the relative frequencies with which lemmas occur in the non-alternating constructions. I argue that allowing both prototype and exemplar effects is more adequate than following radical prototype or exemplar approaches. It is also verified in two experiments that the corpus-derived model corresponds to the behaviour of native speakers. The weak effect size of the experimental validation is discussed in the context of corpus-based cognitive linguistics and the validation of corpus-derived models.
