Damage assessment of a physical beam reinforced with masses - dataset

The dataset beam-signal contains the spectrum vibration signals in the frequency domain measured from a beam reinforced with masses under healthy and faulty conditions. This data is for a commonly used system in various industrial applications. The data can be used for online condition process monitoring to detect and diagnose any anomaly or faulty condition in the system. Hence, the datasets provide the geometric and experimental measurements performed on the beam reinforced with masses for various mass losses considered structural damage. The collected data included the following datasets:

Dataset Mass-position contains 70 sampling positions for the six masses attached to the beam. (Mass position)

Dataset DI contains 280 damage indexes calculated using the FRAC method. (DI_FRAC_Exp-estimation)

Dataset beam-signal includes 280 inertances responses magnitudes and respective phases considering 70 samples of healthy and 210 sampled of damaged conditions ( Dataset Beam-signal_Healthy, Dateset Beam-signal_Damaged-2.96,

Dataset Beam-signal_Damaged-5.92, Dataset Beam-signal_Damaged-8.87) .

The dataset beam-signal can be used to develop structural health monitoring techniques for detecting damage and anomalies in the structure. The dataset's Mass-position and DIs can impose parametric uncertainty in the experiment. Stochastic and damage identification metrics can be used for further insights on new monitoring and control techniques. Since the tests include paramedic uncertainty, they can also be employed in uncertainty quantification, stochastic modelling and supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques.

Therefore, the datasets are intended to benefit the scientific community investigating the dynamics of structures and readers interested in experimental practices applied to systems and modelling. These datasets can be used for numerical model validation, identification techniques, uncertainty quantification, machine learning, and structural integrity monitoring algorithms based on experimental measurement samples on the beam reinforced with mass.

A detailed description of the experiment can be found in

[1] Sousa, A.A.S.R., da Silva Coelho, J., Machado, M.R. et al. Physical seed damage, not rodent's saliva, accelerates seed germination of trees in a subtropical forest

Many tree species adopt fast seed germination to escape the predation risk by rodents. Physical seed damage and the saliva of rodents on partially consumed seeds may also act as cues for the seed to accelerate the germination process. However, the impacts of these factors on seed germination rate and speed remain unclear. In this study, we investigated such impacts on the germination rate and speed (reversal of germination time) of four tree species (Quercus variabilis, Q. serrata, Q. acutissima, and Q. glauca) after partial consumption by four rodent species, through a series of experiments. We also examined how seed traits may affect the damage degree by rodents by analyzing the relationship between the germination rate and time of rodent-damaged seeds and the traits. We found that artificially and rodent-damaged seeds exhibited a significantly higher seed germination rate and speed, compared to intact seeds. Also, the rodent saliva on seeds showed no significant effect on seed germination rate and speed. Furthermore, We observed significant positive correlations between several seed traits (including seed mass, coat thickness, and protein content) and seed germination rate, but these seed traits had a positive correlation with the germination rate and speed. These correlations are likely due to the beneficial traits countering seed damage by rodents. Overall, our results highlight the significant role of physical seed damage by rodents (rather than their saliva) in facilitating seed germination of tree species and potential mutualism between rodents and trees. Additionally, our results may have some implications in forest restoration, such that intentionally sowing or dispersing slightly damaged seeds by humans or drones may increase the likelihood of successful seed regeneration.

Appendix for: Light chain neurofilament revealing brain tissue damage in physical contact sport athletes, a systematic review

Objective: To evaluate whether participating in physical contact sports is associated with a release of neurofilaments and whether this release is related to future clinical neurological and/or psychiatric impairment.

Methods: We have performed a systematic literature review of the PubMed, MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases using a combination of the search terms neurofilament(s)/intermediate filament and sport(s)/athletes. Only original studies, written in English, that have reported on neurofilament measurements in CSF and/or serum/plasma of physical contact sport athletes were retained for data extraction. This review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Analyses guidelines.

Results: Eighteen studies reporting on light chain neurofilament (NfL), in eight different contact sports (i.e. boxing, American football, ice hockey, soccer, mixed martial arts, lacrosse, rugby and wrestling), matched our inclusion criteria. In 13/18 athlete cohorts, significant NfL elevations in CSF or serum/plasma were described, as compared to situations of non-exposure. Most compelling evidence was present in boxers and American football players, where marked and/or immediate exposure-related increases were appreciable at the intra-individual level in exclusive cohorts, generally paired with control groups who were well-described and matched for age. Findings in others sports were less suitable to draw conclusion upon. No studies were encountered that have investigated the relationship with the targeted clinical endpoints.

Conclusion: Nfl release can be seen, as a potential marker of neuronal brain damage, in participants of physical contact sports, particularly boxing and American football. The exact significance regarding the risk for future clinical impairment remains to be elucidated.
