Point-count bird censusing: long-term monitoring of bird abundance and diversity in central Arizona-Phoenix, ongoing since 2000

### project overview Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird community in the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. The bird survey locations in this CAP LTER core monitoring program include six general site groupings: 1. ESCA. Forty bird survey locations were selected from a subset of the CAP LTER's Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA; formerly named Survey200) long-term monitoring sites. ESCA sites were located using a tessellation-stratified dual-density sampling design, and, as such, span a diversity of habitats including urban, suburban, rural, commercial areas, parks, agricultural fields, and native Sonoran desert. Earlier versions of this data package included data from the ESCA project that was intended to complement the bird data. However, while positioned in close proximity, the bird survey locations do not necessarily overlap with the 30m x 30m plot that constitutes an ESCA sampling location, and leveraging data from these two monitoring programs should be addressed carefully. ESCA data have corresponding survey location names, and those data are available through the CAP LTER and LTER network data portals. At the conclusion of the 2016 spring survey, fifteen of the ESCA-correlated sites were discontinued as the core monitoring program refocused its efforts on desert parks and PASS neighborhoods. This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata.

Coupled with these changes in climate and sea level are substantial changes within the rapidly urbanizing watersheds that influence water, sediment, and nutrient delivery to the marsh and estuary. In PIE IV our focus is on: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts. Waterways are often the focus of restoration efforts in urban areas. In arid regions, passive discharge of urban water sources may stimulate the recovery or growth of wetland and riparian features in dewatered or ephemeral aquatic systems. In the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA), sections of the Salt and Gila Rivers have been the targets of active restoration through seeding, planting, and irrigation. At the same time, revegetation has occurred in some sections of the rivers in response to runoff from urban water sources (e.g., storm drains). This dataset catalogs the results of bird surveys conducted at several locations along the Salt River in and around the GPMA beginning in March 2013. Monitoring locations focus on reaches of the river with different characteristics, including: (1) urbanized with perennial water and actively restored (n=2 reaches), (2) urbanized with perennial water and passively restored (n=2 reaches), (3) urbanized with ephemeral water but not restored (n=2 reaches), and (4) non-urban reference areas with perennial water (n=1 reach). This program expands on bird monitoring that the CAP LTER conducts at other locations in and around the GPMA, and complements herpetological surveys that are performed at these locations along the Salt River where the bird surveys are performed. This is a long-term monitoring effort of the CAP LTER with on-going data collection.

Annual Point Count Breeding Bird Survey at Pepperwood Preserve in the California Coast Ranges 2007-2019

The Dwight Center for Conservation Science at Pepperwood is an ecological institute dedicated to educating, engaging, and inspiring our community through habitat preservation, science-based conservation, leading-edge research, and interdisciplinary educational programs. Our mission is to steward the life and landscapes of the 3,200-acre Pepperwood Preserve and to advance science-based conservation of ecosystems throughout our region and beyond. The Pepperwood Breeding Bird Survey was initiated in the spring of 2007 with the goal of establishing a set of baseline bird community data that would be built upon for years to come. Four transects (totaling 38 points) are surveyed annually using standardized five-minute point count protocols outlined by the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now called Point Blue Conservation Science; Ballard et al. 2003) and the Handbook of Field Methods for Monitoring Landbirds (Ralph et al. 1993). Surveys are conducted by experienced volunteers during the breeding season starting in late April and ending in June, with each transect surveyed a total of three times. The Rogers Creek and Martin Creek transects were established in 2007. The Weimar Flat and Pepperwood Road transects were established in 2008 and 2012, respectively, to ensure comprehensive coverage across the various habitats that occur at the preserve including Douglas-fir forest, mixed hardwood forest, oak woodland/forest, chaparral, and open grasslands. Point-count bird censusing: bird abundance and diversity in CAP LTER Phoenix Area Social Survey neighborhoods throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, 2006-2016

The Phoenix Area Social Survey (PASS) parallels the Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (formerly, Survey 200) as a long-term monitoring program of the CAP LTER. Every five years, the PASS research team surveys households in selected neighborhoods in the metropolitan Phoenix area to better understand perceptions, values, and behaviors of several key environmental issues, including water conservation, urban growth, air pollution, land conservation, biodiversity and urban climate change, as well as perceptions about their neighborhoods. The survey was piloted in 2001-2002 in eight neighborhoods in Phoenix with 302 respondents, and grew to over 40 neighborhoods and 800 households in 2005. Bird survey locations were established in each of the PASS neighborhoods, colocated as much as possible with the corresponding ESCA survey location in the neighborhood. Bird surveys were conducted biannualy (spring, winter) approximately the year of and the year after each PASS. In a given season, each bird survey location is visited independently by three birders who count all birds seen or heard within a 15-minute window.

Point count surveys in order to gain density estimates of birds

Recent evidence suggests that the southern Appalachian Mountains are experiencing increasing spatial and temporal variability in hydroclimate. Specifically, the region is experiencing both increasing frequency of extreme precipitation and a reduced frequency of more moderate precipitation. Moreover, heterogeneity in precipitation among subwatersheds has resulted in neighboring watersheds experiencing large differences in precipitation levels over the past 30 years. This extreme spatial variability creates an opportunity to examine how differences in precipitation relate to the abundances of regional flora or fauna. Breeding bird abundance was measured on areas of intact forest in Macon County, North Carolina, USA that have varied in precipitation over the past 30 years. I hypothesized that long term changes in moisture regimes would cause terrestrial vertebrates to persist in an area where their species specific environmental requirements were being met. Focal passerines of this study have variable life history traits and therefore I hypothesized that vegetation that promotes their respective habitat would be a main factor determining their abundance; furthermore, vegetation is proximally associated with precipitation, therefore some measurable differences among sites may exist. All dry sites in this study have higher estimated avian densities, Black-throated Blue Warblers were found exclusively on dry sites and Black-throated Green Warblers were found almost exclusively on wet sites. These results suggest that a correlation exist between microclimate and avifauna surveyed in this study.

Bird abundance - point counts

Measurements of bird abundance are taken annually or more frequently in the 9 ha grid (5/89 to 6/90) and Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (10/90 to present) at El Verde, in Bisley Watersheds 1 and 2 (6/89 to 5/91), and in Whendee Silver’s cut plots at Bisley (5/89 to 2/90). Avian community survey by point count method in a leafy forest of the Station de Biologie des Laurentides, Université de Montréal

<p>Here we provided a dataset of birds&rsquo; communities census in the Station de Biologie des Laurentides (SBL), the Universit&eacute; de Montr&eacute;al field station. Census was performed as part of the BIO2854 field course. BIO2854 is an undergraduate course in terrestrial animal ecology in biological science at Universit&eacute; de Montr&eacute;al. Highly qualified teaching assistant and students surveyed forest birds over 4 days in May-June 2011 to 2019 by acoustic point-count method. Abundance counts were made based on bird vital domain available in literature and the assumption that each recorded male was associated with one female from the same species. Data are made available to consult for future research and teaching purpose.</p>

Avian point count data from the Ice Storm Experiment (ISE) plots

Large-scale disturbances such as ice storms may increase in frequency and intensity as climate changes. While disturbances are a natural component of forest ecosystems, climatically driven alteration to historical patterns may impart fundamental change to ecosystem function. At Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, experimental ice storms of varying severity were applied to replicate plots of mature northern hardwoods to quantify their effects on forested ecosystems. We assessed ice storm treatment effects on insectivorous foliage-gleaning birds and their interactions with larval Lepidoptera. These birds are charismatic, of conservation concern, and are a major predator of caterpillars. In turn, lepidopterans are the dominant herbivores in temperate forests and are integral to ecosystem function. We predicted that avian abundance would increase due to additional structural heterogeneity caused by ice treatments, with a concomitant increase in caterpillar predation. Point counts were used to measure insectivorous bird activity in the ice storm experiment plots and additional control plots before and after treatments. Point counts were conducted in June 2015 and June 2016. Icing occurred in January-February 2016. We deployed and retrieved plasticine model caterpillars and estimated predation from characteristic marks to these surrogates. Abundance of foliage-gleaning birds was higher in the ice storm plots and birds responded to treatments as a single diffuse disturbance rather than on an individual plot level. All species except one were observed both before and after the ice treatments. Surprisingly, predation on caterpillar models was unaffected by ice storm treatments but rather was a function of caterpillar density. The increase in avian abundance in the ice storm treatment plots corroborates other studies of bird responses to relatively small-scale disturbances in forests and the limited change in species composition was expected given the plot size. Combining point counts and autonomous recording units improves avian survey efficacy across elevational gradients on two continents

<p>Accurate biodiversity and population monitoring is a requirement for effective conservation decision-making. Survey method bias is therefore a concern, particularly when research programs face logistical and cost limitations.</p> <p>We employed point counts (PCs) and autonomous recording units (ARUs) to survey avian biodiversity within comparable, high elevation, temperate mountain habitats at opposite ends of the Americas: 9 mountains in British Columbia (BC), Canada and 10 in southern Chile. We compared detected species richness against multi-year species inventories and examined method-specific detection probability by family. By incorporating time costs, we assessed the performance and efficiency of single vs. combined methods.</p> <p>Species accumulation curves indicate ARUs can capture ~93% of species present in BC but only ~58% in Chile, despite Chilean mountain communities being less diverse. The avian community, rather than landscape composition, appears to drive this dramatic difference. Chilean communities contain less-vocal species, which ARUs missed. Further, 6/13 families in BC were better detected by ARUs while 11/11 families in Chile were better detected by PCs. Where survey conditions differentially impacted method performance, PCs mostly varied over the morning and with canopy cover in BC, while ARUs mostly varied seasonally in Chile. Within a single year of monitoring, neither method alone was predicted to capture the full avian community, with the exception of ARUs in the alpine and subalpine of BC. PCs contributed little to detected diversity in BC, but including this method resulted in negligible increases in total time costs. Combining PCs with ARUs in Chile significantly increased species detections, again, for little cost.</p> <p>Combined methods were among the most efficient and accurate approaches to capturing diversity. We recommend conducting point counts while ARUs are being deployed and retrieved in order to capture additional diversity with minimal additional effort and to flag methodological biases using a comparative framework.</p>
