Women's political participation in city council, Debretabor City Administration, Ethiopia: An exploration of barriers
<p><span>Women have traditionally been marginalized within the political sphere, notwithstanding their significant achievements. The study looks at the barriers that stand in the way of women participating actively in politics, with a particular emphasis on the Debre Tabor City Council. A case study research design was used in the study. The sample techniques used were maximum variation, deviant case, and intensity sampling. Semi-structured interviews, life histories, and focus group discussions (FGD) were also used to obtain the data. The findings showed that women's political engagement in city council was in danger due to a variety of factors, including <span>gender bias in decision-making processes</span>, the country's shifting political landscape, and <span>Islamic religion fellows' perspectives.</span> <span>In light of this, the research findings urged the need for gender-sensitive policy formulation within the city administration council. </span></span></p>
CATCH-EyoU: Meanings and Practices of Youth Participation and Cases of Successful Participation: Cross-national Documentary Evidence of Youth Civic and Political Participation Initiatives
<p>The data set integrates documentary evidence of national youth civic and political participation initiatives in Italy, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Czech Republic, UK, and Estonia. The evidence are represented as pamphlets, brochures, leaflets, newsletters, social media and websites, you tube videos, meme and vine campaigns. The participation initiatives are selected with a focus on initiatives used by national youth citizenship organizations for generating, supporting, communicating and engaging young people’s active participation in diverse and varied causes (the environment, voting at 16, anti-fees and cuts campaigns, rights around civic spaces and youth centers, employment and jobs-related campaigns, issues around race and religion, volunteering, refugees, local housing and education).</p> <p> </p> <p>The data set consists of: (1) a spreadsheet integrating data from all partner countries, and containing qualitative descriptions of activities and cataloguing associated materials of youth civic and political organizations; (2) a textual report containing exemplar images of publicly available online newsletters, minutes, reports and campaign materials from across the consortium (where feasible), copyright cleared and creative commons screenshots of websites, invitation letters, records of personal conversations with members of youth civic teams, quotes from researcher-conversations on social media or f-2-f with members of teams with names redacted.</p> <p>Personal data and all non-public data has been anonymized in order to protect participants’ privacy.</p> <p>The data can be re-used by researchers who want to compare our cross- European data with similar data collected in different countries, to perform textual analysis (content analysis and/or data mining) on our data. Also other stakeholders may be interested in reanalyzing our data for comparative aims.</p>

<p>Interactive Documentary Theory and Debate: Participation and Politics by Kate Nash, University of Leeds 7th October 2021 held in the context of the virtual lecture series, hosted by the University of Bayreuth as a part of the research project Digital Documentary Practices – Topical paradigm shifts and the potential of emerging practices to participate in public discourses. </p> <p><a href="https://did.avinus.org/virtuelle-ringvorlesung-1/ ">https://did.avinus.org/virtuelle-ringvorlesung-1/ </a></p> <p>Kate Nash has not only been working on both the documentary film and on digital media; rather she exactly investigating this relationship between documentary’s tradition and documentary’s future, analysing on presently emerging documentary practices. “There is a sense of profound change, of new possibilities, and traditions overturned”, she states in her latest publication, Interactive Documentary. Theory and Debate. And yet, in this comprehensive monograph tracing continuities as well as turning points in the evolution of digital and documentary practices, she challenges tendencies to approach interactive documentary primarily from the perspective of total novelty and change because there are more evolutionary connections than revolutionary ruptures to be found. On this basis, Kate focus in her video on Participation and Politics. </p> <p>Having come from a background in media production, specializing in documentary, Kate focusses in her research on the production, circulation and impacts of factual media – thus also documentary. Being on of the most renowned scholars in the field of interactive documentary, her research output is incredible, and a list of publications in this area is tremendous. To give you just a glimpse on the scope of issues Kate has been analyzing in this context in the last year, let me just drop some titles: Among other’s, Kate is the author of “Modes of interactivity: analysing the webdoc”, “Telling stories: the narrative study of documentary ethics” (2012), “Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries” (2014), “Strategies of interaction, questions of meaning” (2014), “What is interactivity for? The social dimension of web-documentary participation” (2015), and “I-docs and the documentary tradition: exploring questions of citizenship” (2017). Most recently, Kate has also tackled the issue of ethics and VR documentary, editing a special issue in Studies in Documentary Film, and together with Craig Hight and Catherine Summerhayes, she edited New Documentary Ecologies. Emerging Platforms, Practices and Discourses (2014). And, as already mentioned, in her latest monograph, she investigates Interactive Documentary. Theory and Debate (2021). Moreover, Kate is a Co-Editor of the documentary studies journal Studies in Documentary Film. Currently, she is developing research in the area of health and environmental documentary, focusing particularly on engagement and impact.</p>
