Accuracy or positions and parallaxes

Two figures from a report soon to be placed on arXiv:

Astrometric Accuracy of Positions

Erik Høg, Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen University

Figure 1. The accuracy of observed star positions for 2000 years, marked with red color for observations from the ground and with blue from space. The accuracy was greatly improved shortly before 1600 AD by the Landgrave in Kassel and by Tycho Brahe in Denmark. The following 400 years brought even larger but much more gradual improvement before space techniques with the European Hipparcos satellite started a new era of astrometry. Catalogs before 1900 are plotted at the mean epoch of observation, but after 1900 at the time of publication. – The 17 million brightest stars in the sky have accuracies of 0.014 milliarcsec

Figure 1b. Astrometric accuracy, update of Fig.5 from 1995 to our 2024 knowledge, including both parallaxes and positions. Gaia produces millions of accurate proper motions and parallaxes in addition to the positions shown in this diagram, see Gaia DR3 (2022). The important astrometry from space obtained with the HST should also be mentioned, and the very accurate astrometry by interferometry with radio telescopes.

Data from: How a GNSS receiver is held may affect static horizontal position accuracy

The static horizontal position accuracy of a mapping-grade GNSS receiver was tested in two forest types over two seasons, and subsequently was tested in one forest type against open sky conditions in the winter season. The main objective was to determine whether the holding position during data collection would result in significantly different static horizontal position accuracy. Additionally, we wanted to determine whether the time of year (season), forest type, or environmental variables had an influence on accuracy. In general, the F4Devices Flint GNSS receiver was found to have mean static horizontal position accuracy levels within the ranges typically expected for this general type of receiver (3 to 5 m) when differential correction was not employed. When used under forest cover, in some cases the GNSS receiver provided a higher level of static horizontal position accuracy when held vertically, as opposed to held at an angle or horizontally (the more natural positions), perhaps due to the orientation of the antenna within the receiver, or in part due to multipath or the inability to use certain satellite signals. Therefore, due to the fact that numerous variables may affect static horizontal position accuracy, we only conclude that there is weak to moderate evidence that the results of holding position are significant. Statistical test results also suggest that the season of data collection had no significant effect on static horizontal position accuracy, and results suggest that atmospheric variables had weak correlation with horizontal position accuracy. Forest type was found to have a significant effect on static horizontal position accuracy in one aspect of one test, yet otherwise there was little evidence that forest type affected horizontal position accuracy. Since the holding position was found in some cases to be significant with regard to the static horizontal position accuracy of positions collected in forests, it may be beneficial to have an understanding of antenna positioning within the receiver to achieve the greatest accuracy during data collection.

A Retrospective Cohort to Access the Accuracy of Agitated Saline Bubble–Enhanced Ultrasound to Visualize Appropriated Position of Hemodialysis Catheter: Does Catheter Venous Site Matter?

Background: The non-tunnelled hemodialysis catheter (HDC) is commonly used to start renal replacement therapy in hospitalised patients, especially in acute kidney injury. Malposition of HDC is associated with delayed therapy and inadequate dialysis. Agitated saline bubble-enhanced ultrasound (SBUS) has become a new method to visualise catheter position at the same time of insertion. Our aim is to analyse the concordance of SBUS and chest radiography (CXR) to assess HDC position, according to the site of insertion: right vs left internal jugular vein (IJV).

Methods: From December 2019 to May 2021, we evaluated 152 hospitalized patients submitted to IJV catheter insertion. We evaluated the time from puncture to CXR result, procedure-related complications, blood flow and the accuracy of SBUS when compared to CXR to detect HDC position adequacy at both sites.

Results: The median [IQR] time between catheter insertion and CXR result was 191 [93;288] minutes, no difference between puncture sites. Complications after catheter insertion were mostly arterial puncture (2% overall), similar incidence between sites. The incidence of inadequate blood flow was higher at the left IJV than at the right IJV. For HDC at the right IJV, there was high concordance between position-adequacy assessment by SBUS and CXR ( of Gwet = 0.95, CI: 0.915; 0.992), 95.6% accuracy. For HDC at the left IJV the concordance was low ( of Gwet 0.37, IC: -0.21; 0,94), as was accuracy (64.3%).

Conclusion: Compared with chest radiography, agitated saline bubble-enhanced ultrasound is a suitable method to check catheter placement when right internal jugular vein is used, but not left for internal jugular vein.
