Earthquake Catalogue for: Illuminating the pre-, co-, and post-seismic phases of the 2016 M7.8 Kaikoura earthquake with 10 years of seismicity

0.2: Correction

This version corrects the original dataset which had some incorrect focal mechanisms. These mechanisms had incorrect rakes as a result of an error in the uncertainty calculation algorithm. The remainder of the catalogue is unchanged.

Code:

If you are looking for the code used for this project this is here: https://zenodo.org/record/5047794#.Y22Mvn5By-Y - the link in the paper appears to be wrong as of 11/11/2022.

Description

Earthquake catalogue generated around the rupture area of the 2016 M7.8 Kaikoura earthquake. For a full description see the associated paper submitted to JGR 2021.

The catalogue is here in two forms:

A QuakeML file with all picks, magnitudes, and locations included. This is quite a large file. When reading using ObsPy this will take a long time to read (>10 minutes), and expand in memory to > 8GB.

A CSV file with the preferred origin and magnitude information for all events. Relocated events can be identified because they have a station count of 0: GrowClust does not return the number of stations used, whereas NonLinLoc (used for absolute locations) does.

InSAR time-series and FEM Model of the Post-seismic Surface Deformation following the 2013 Baluchistan Earthquake

Subduction zone accretionary prisms are commonly modeled as elastic structures where permanent deformation is accommodated by faulting and folding of otherwise elastic materials, yet accretionary prisms may exhibit other deformation styles over relatively short time scales. In this study, we use 6.5-year (2014-2021) Sentinel-1 InSAR time-series of post-seismic deformation in the Makran accretionary prism of southeast Pakistan to characterize non-linear viscoelastic deformation within an active accretionary prism on short timescales (months to years). We constructed a series of 3-D finite-element models of the Makran subduction zone, including an accretionary prism, and constrained the elastic thickness of the upper wedge and the flow-law parameters (power-law exponent, activation enthalpy, and pre-exponential constant) of the lower wedge through forward model fits to the InSAR time-series. Our results show that the prism is elastically thin (8-12 km) and the non-linear viscoelastic relaxation of the deep portions of the prism alone can sufficiently explain the post-seismic surface deformation. Our best fitting flow-law parameters (n = 3.76±0.39, Q = 82.2±37.73 kJ mol-1, and A = 10-3.36±4.69) are consistent with triggering of low temperature dislocation creep within fluid-saturated siliciclastic rocks. We believe that the fluids necessary for this weakening originate from sedimentary underplating and/or the presence the hydrocarbons. The presence of power-law rheology within the lower wedge impacts the estimated plate coupling and the stress state in the subduction system, with respect to the conventional elastic wedge model, and hence need to be considered in future earthquake cycle models.

Evolution of coseismic and post-seismic landsliding after the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake, Nepal

Landslide area density grid used in the analysis of the spatial evolution of landsliding following the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal. The data include 11 epochs of landslide area density, including bi-annual assessments between 2014 and 2018 (pre- and post-monsoon), and an additional coseismic assessment from 2015.

This research has been supported by the UKRI-DFID SHEAR program (201844-112).

Supplementary materials for an AI-based method for estiamting the potential runout distance of post-seismic debris flows

We included several figures and tables in this file to support the study on runout distance estimation using a AI-based method, mainly focusing on the precipitation downscaling, calibration, assessment, and rainfall threshold calculation. Additionally, the prediction results of all the debris flow catchments were included in a table when intraday rainfall ranges from 40 to 100 mm.

The coseismic and post-seismic deformation of 2020 Nima earthquake obatined by InSAR

The two zip files contain the co-seismic deformation and accumulated post-seismic deformation (line of sight ) of ascending and descending orbits of the 2020 Nima earthquake observed by Sentinel-1. The units of co-seismic and post-seismic deformation are meter and millimeter respectively. The positive value is motions to the satellite, and the negative value is motins away from the satellite.

If you have any questions about this data, please contact me via gaohuastudent@163.com.
