Wisconsin creel dataset as well as predictor variables for lakes from 1990 to 2017 to estimate statewide recreational fisheries harvest
Recreational fisheries have high economic worth, valued at $190B globally. An important, but underappreciated, secondary value of recreational catch is its role as a source of food. This contribution is poorly understood due to difficulty in estimating recreational harvest at spatial scales beyond an individual system, as traditionally estimated from angler creel surveys. Here, we address this gap using a 28-year creel survey of ~300 Wisconsin inland lakes. We develop a statistical model of recreational harvest for individual lakes and then scale-up to unsurveyed lakes (3769 lakes; 73% of statewide lake surface area) to generate a statewide estimate of recreational lake harvest of ~4200 t and an estimated annual angler consumption rate of ~3 kg, nearly double estimated United States per capita freshwater fish consumption. Recreational fishing harvest makes significant contributions to human diets, is critical for discussions on food security, and the multiple ecosystem services of freshwater systems.
Artificial Communities Experiment: Predictor Variables
This study considers the relative role of competition and facilitation in primary succession of the boreal forest floodplain of Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest. Alder (Alnus tenuifolia Nutt.) is an early colonist of young floodplain sites, where it contributes greatly to soil development through the addition of nitrogen to the soil. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) typically colonizes such sites later; it becomes established beneath a canopy of alder and willow (Salix spp.) which is sometimes overtopped by young balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.). The alder may potentially influence white spruce both positively and negatively. Possible facilitative effects include protection of small seedlings from excess heat or heavy siltation accompanying flooding and addition of soil nitrogen, an effect that may extend for many years. Competition for light (and other resources) before the white spruce has overtopped the alder canopy may prove to be a major negative effects. This study seeks to determine the net balance of these effects on the floodplain successional sequence.

Modelling snowpack bulk density using snow depth, cumulative degree-days and climatological predictor variables -- data set
<p>This file constitutes the data set containing the snow course survey, North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR)-derived degree-day indices, and climatological variables data used to conduct the analysis, and generate the figures and tables in the manuscript titled "Modelling snowpack bulk density using snow depth, cumulative degree-days and climatological predictor variables" by Andras J. Szeitz and R. Dan Moore. The manuscript was submitted for publication in the journal 'Hydrological Processes'.</p> <p>Due to the size of the NARR data files used to derive the air temperature time series for each snow course location, we recommend acquiring them from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's data portal directly (<a href="https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.narr.html">https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.narr.html</a>).</p> <p>Likewise, the ClimateNA software application used to extract the climatological variables for each snow course location can be obtained from the Centre for Forest Conservation Genetics, Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, UBC, directly (<a href="https://climatena.ca/">https://climatena.ca/</a>).</p>
Environmental variables serve as predictors of the exotic and invasive Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann): an approach for targeted tick surveillance
<p>Since the 2017 discovery of established populations of the Asian longhorned tick, (<em>Haemaphysalis longicornis </em>Neumann) in the United States, populations continue to be detected in new areas. For this exotic and invasive species, capable of transmitting a diverse repertoire of pathogens and blood-feeding on a variety of host species, there remains a lack of targeted information on how to best prepare for this tick and understand when and where it occurs. To fill this gap, we conducted two years of weekly tick surveillance at four farms in Tennessee (three <em>H. longicornis</em>-infested and one without) to identify environmental factors associated with each questing life stage, to investigate predictors of abundance, and to determine the likelihood of not collecting ticks at different life stages. A total of 46,770 ticks were collected, of which 12,607 <em>H. longicornis</em> and five other tick species were identified. Overall, abundance of <em>H. longicornis </em>was associated with spring and summer seasons, forested environments, relative humidity and barometric pressure, sunny conditions, and in relation with other tick species. The likelihood of not collecting <em>H. longicornis</em> was associated with day length and barometric pressure. Additional associations for different life stages were also identified and included other tick species, climatic variables, and environmental conditions. Here, we demonstrated that environmental variables can be useful to predict the presence of questing <em>H. longicornis</em> and provide ideas on how to use this information to develop a surveillance plan for different southeastern areas with and without infestations.</p>

Environmental variability as a predictor of behavioral flexibility in urban environments
<p>Global urbanization processes have highlighted the importance of understanding the effects of urban habitats on animal behavior. Behavioral changes are usually evaluated along an urbanization gradient, comparing urban and rural populations. However, this metric fails to consider heterogeneity between urban habitats that can differ significantly in their characteristics, such as their level of environmental variability. We suggest incorporating dimensions of environmental variability into the urbanization metric. We tested the importance of both level of urbanization and level of urban stability (the rate of anthropogenic changes) on animals' behavioral flexibility by comparing reversal learning abilities in house sparrows from sites differing in the rate of urban development over time. We show that at least for males, urban stability better explains levels of behavioral flexibility than urbanization level. We further show that urban stability corresponds to other behavioral traits such as scrounging behavior and foraging activity. Thus, considering environmental stability and predictability in the form of urban changes can help better understand the mechanisms allowing behavioral changes and adaptations to urban environments. Evaluating the dynamics of the urban built environment could provide a better metric with which to understand urbanization effects on wildlife behavior and an important next step in urban ecology.</p>
