<p>NetCDF data used in analysis presented in&nbsp;&quot;Assessment of the z~ time-filtered Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian coordinate in a global eddy-permitting ocean model&quot;, submitted to Journal of Advances in Modelling the Earth System.</p> <p>The data are produced from an ensemble of six experiments based on the GO8p0 configuration of NEMO v4.0.1 on a&nbsp;global 1/4&deg; grid, as described in the paper. The ensemble is intended to test the z~ vertical coordinate, and includes a control with the&nbsp;default &quot;z-star&quot; fixed&nbsp;coordinate, and five experiments with the z-tilde vertical coordinate, using a selection of values for the two z-tilde timescale parameters. The data includes time series of global mean ocean and ice fields; large-scale transports; and fields from diapycnal&nbsp;mixing analysis.</p> <p>The first part of each filename refers to the experiment from&nbsp;the ensemble (&quot;zstar&quot;, &quot;ztilde_5_30&quot;, &quot;ztilde_10_30&quot;, &quot;ztilde_20_30&quot;, ztilde_20_60&quot; and &quot;ztilde_40_60&quot;);&nbsp;the following five-character string&nbsp;identifies&nbsp;the respective suite on the Met Office Rose system and the MASS archive system; and the rest of the name specifies the type of data contained in the file.</p>

Deep-time convergent evolution in animal communication presented by shared adaptations for coping with noise in lizards and other animals

<p>Convergence in communication appears rare compared to other forms of adaptation. This is puzzling, given communication is acutely dependent on the environment and expected to converge in form when animals communicate in similar habitats. We uncover deep-time convergence in territorial communication between two groups of tropical lizards separated by over 140 million years of evolution: the Southeast Asian Draco and Caribbean Anolis. These groups have repeatedly converged in multiple aspects of display along common environmental gradients. Robot playbacks to free-ranging lizards confirmed the most prominent convergence in display is adaptive, as it improves signal detection. We then provide evidence from a sample of the literature to further show convergent adaptation among highly divergent animal groups is almost certainly widespread in nature. Signal evolution is therefore curbed towards the same set of adaptive solutions, especially when animals are challenged with the problem of communicating effectively in noisy environments.</p>

Data presented in: Walking Drosophila navigate complex plumes using stochastic decisions biased by the timing of odor encounters

<p>How insects navigate complex odor plumes, where the location and timing of odor packets are uncertain, remains unclear. Here, we imaged complex odor plumes simultaneously with freely-walking flies, quantifying how behavior is shaped by encounters with individual odor packets. We found that navigation was stochastic, and did not rely on the continuous modulation of speed or orientation. Instead, flies turned stochastically with stereotyped saccades, whose direction was biased upwind by the timing of prior odor encounters, while the magnitude and rate of saccades remained constant. Further, flies used the timing of odor encounters to modulate the transition rates between walks and stops. In more regular environments, flies continuously modulate speed and orientation, even though encounters can still occur randomly due to animal motion. We find that in less predictable environments, where encounters are random in both space and time, walking flies instead navigate with random walks biased by encounter timing.</p>

Time-series of groundwater recharge, Tiber Riber Basin, Italy from 801 CE to the present day

<p>Groundwater, essential for water availability, sanitation, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals, is shaped by climate dynamics and complex hydrogeological structures. Here, we provide a time-series of groundwater recharge from 801 CE to the present day in the Tiber River Basin, Italy, using historical records and hydrological modelling. Groundwater drought occurred in 36% of the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (801-1249) years, 12% of the Little Ice Age (1250-1849) years, and 26% of the Modern Warming Period (1850-2020) years. Importantly, a predominant warm phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, aligned with solar maxima, coincided with prolonged dry spells during both the medieval and modern periods, inducing a reduction in recharge rates due to hydrological memory effects. This study enhances understanding of climate-water interactions, offering a comprehensive view of groundwater dynamics in central Mediterranean and highlighting the importance of the past for sustainable future strategies. Leveraging this understanding can address water scarcity and enhance basin resilience.</p>

It has been introduced to Selayar I between Sulawesi and Flores (W occurrence of the species), and there are vague records from Flores and Sulawesi, which may also refer to the Selayar population. This species was also apparently introduced to Mussau (St. Matthias Group, NE Bismarck Archipelago) in prehistoric times and to New Ireland I (Bismarck Archipelago) in the 20™ century. in Phalangeridae
