The sodium/proton exchanger NHA2 regulates blood pressure through a WNK4-NCC dependent pathway in the kidney
<p>NHA2 is sodium/hydrogen exchanger that was associated with arterial hypertension in humans, but the role of NHA2 in kidney function and blood pressure homeostasis is currently unknown. Here we show that NHA2 localizes almost exclusively to distal convoluted tubules in the kidney. NHA2 knock-out mice displayed reduced blood pressure, normocalcemic hypocalciuria and an attenuated response to the thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Phosphorylation of the thiazide-sensitive sodium/chloride cotransporter NCC and its upstream activating kinase Ste20/SPS1-related proline/alaninerich kinase (SPAK), as well as the abundance of with no lysine [K] kinase 4 (WNK4), were significantly reduced in kidneys of NHA2 knock-out mice. In vitro experiments recapitulated these findings and revealed increased WNK4 ubiquitylation and enhanced proteasomal WNK4 degradation upon loss of NHA2. The effect of NHA2 on WNK4 stability was Kelch-like 3 (KLHL3)-dependent. More specifically, loss of NHA2 selectively attenuated KLHL3 phosphorylation and the physiologically important PKAand PKC-mediated decrease of WNK4 degradation was blunted upon loss of NHA2. Phenotype analysis of NHA2/NCC double knock-out mice supported the notion that NHA2 affects blood pressure homeostasis by an intrarenal and NCC-dependent mechanism. In summary, our data reveal NHA2 as a critical component of the WNK4-NCC pathway and hence as a novel regulator of blood pressure homeostasis in the kidney.</p>
Data from: Frequency-dependent and correlational selection pressures have conflicting consequences for assortative mating in a color-polymorphic lizard, Uta stansburiana
Genetically determined polymorphisms incorporating multiple traits can persist in nature under chronic, fluctuating and sometimes conflicting selection pressures. Balancing selection among morphs preserves equilibrium frequencies, while correlational selection maintains favorable trait combinations within each morph. Under negative frequency-dependent selection, females should mate (often disassortatively) with rare male morphotypes to produce conditionally fit offspring. Conversely, under correlational selection, females should mate assortatively to preserve coadapted gene complexes and avoid ontogenetic conflict. Using controlled breeding designs, we evaluated consequences of assortative mating patterns in color-polymorphic side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana), to identify conflict between these sources of selection. Females who mated disassortatively, and to conditionally high quality males in the context of frequency-dependent selection, experienced highest fertility rates. In contrast, assortatively-mated females experienced higher fetal viability rates. The trade-off between fertility and egg viability resulted in no overall fitness benefit to either assortative or disassortative mating patterns. These results suggest that ongoing conflict between correlational and frequency dependent selection in polymorphic populations may generate a trade-off between rare-morph advantage and phenotypic integration, and between assortative and disassortative mating decisions. More generally, interactions among multiple sources of diversity-promoting selection can alter adaptations and dynamics predicted to arise under any of these regimes alone.

"The current-voltage characteristics and partial pressure dependence of defect controlled electrochemical reactions on mixed conducting oxides"
<p>Oxygen exchange reaction rates on mixed conducting perovskite electrodes are described as a function of defect concentrations, see <a href="http://elchinfo.cta.tuwien.ac.at/pmwiki/uploads/Profiles/Schmid_JESoc.pdf">The current-voltage characteristics and partial pressure dependence of defect controlled electrochemical reactions on mixed conducting oxides</a> for a detailed description.</p> <p>Here, (exchange) currents, polarization resistances, <span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> dependencies and Tafel-slopes are calculated as function of <span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> and overpotential for different possible reaction mechnisms. The defect concentrations are taken from the model material La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-<span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>, and listed in Brouwer_Bias.csv as a function of <span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> and overpotential.</p> <p>Model 7 describes a molecular mechanisms wothout adsorption limitation, model 8 includes adsorption limitation. Likewise Models 10 and 11 describe atomic mechanisms without and with adsorption limitation, respectively.</p> <p>Overpotentials are listed in V, oxygen partial pressures in bar, defect concentrations in defects per unit cell and currents are in arbitrary units as are resistances.</p> <p>Partial pressure and overpotential dependencies (p and n slopes) are given as <span class="math-tex">\(\frac{\partial \ln j}{\partial\ln p_{\rm{O_2}}}\)</span>(unitless) and <span class="math-tex">\(\frac{\partial \ln j}{\partial\eta}\)</span>(/V), and likewise with resistances instead of currents (rp and rn slopes), respectively.</p> <p>The source code for this project is available at: https://github.com/AlexSchmid22191/EIS_R_Sim</p>
Pressure effects on frequency dependent wave velocities of saturated rocks
<p>These data are the P- and S-wave velocities obtained by Ba et al. through ultrasonic experimental measurements and the seismic measurements on a rock sample at different pressures.</p> <p>In the package of data, wave velocities measured at different pore fluids and frequencies are saved as different XLSX files. The title of each XLSX file includes the sample number, saturation condition and measurement frequency. For instance, "Sample D_Seismic_Brine" denotes that wave velocities of sample D measured with the full brine saturation are measured at seismic frequency, while "Sample D_Ultrasonic_Gas" denotes that wave velocities of gas-saturated sample D are measured at ultrasonic frequency. The package also includes the TXT file of sample properties.</p> <p>In the TXT files of seismic measurements, the first column gives the differential pressure values, the second column gives frequency values, the third and fourth column gives P- and S-wave velocities. In the TXT files of ultrasonic measurements, the first column gives the differential pressure values, the second and third column gives P- and S-wave velocities.</p>
