Recruitment data from 1997 to 2021 for mussels, barnacles and rockweeds from an LTREB project in the Gulf of Maine, USA
Experimental clearings in macroalgal (Ascophyllum nodosum) stands were made in 1996 to determine if mussel beds and macroalgal stands on protected intertidal shores in New England represent alternative community states. Uncleared control plots and four sizes of circular clearings (1m, 2m, 4m and 8m in diameter), which mimicked ice scour events, were established in A. nodosum stands at 12 sites on Swan’s Island, Maine, USA. The purpose of these datasets is to provide access to data on recruitment of mussels, barnacles and fucoid seaweeds in the 60 experimental plots from 1997 to 2021. Earlier versions of the data prior to 2013 can be found in Ecological Archives (E090-039 and E096-274). This EDI version includes corrections of errors in the versions in Ecological Archives. Research was funded by NSF's LTREB program.
Long-term Plant Biomass Monitoring Data from the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Project on Sapelo Island, Georgia
The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER program (GCE) monitors plant biomass annually with the goal of testing the hypothesis that end-of-year biomass varies as a function of 1) freshwater discharge from the Altamaha River (especially in low-marsh plots), 2) local rainfall (especially in high-marsh plots), and 3) average sea level. In 2000 we created permanent plots at all 10 GCE marsh monitoring sites. Plots were established at creek-bank and mid-marsh sites (8 plots per zone per site). Most sites are dominated by Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass), but zones at some sites are dominated by Juncus roemerianus, Spartina cynosuroides, or Zizaniopsis miliacea. An additional marsh zone (high marsh Juncus) was established at site 10 in 2005 and site 9 in 2012 to increase replication of sites with Juncus. Plants have been non-destructively monitored in October of every year from 2000 to the present, measuring the stem count, height and flowering status of every plant in each plot. Stem clipping samples were also collected adjacent to plots in 2002, 2007, and 2020, then measured, dried, weighed and statistically analyzed in order to generate allometric regression relationships between height and mass for estimation of plant biomass in corresponding plots. This data set includes cumulative long-term observations of plant stem count, height and biomass per marsh zone, plot and species at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites from 2000 to 2023, and will be updated annually to include the prior year observations.
Long-term Plant Biomass Monitoring Data from Altamaha River Plant Transition Sites near the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Project on Sapelo Island, Georgia
The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER program (GCE) monitors plant biomass annually to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 3 sampling sites on the creekbank of the Altamaha River. The sites were chosen to capture the transition from Spartina alterniflora to Spartina cynosuroides (site SCSA) and the transition from Spartina cynosuroides to Zizaniopsis miliacea (sites ZSC1 and ZSC2). The quadrats were established as permanent plots in October 2012 by placing PVC stakes along the creekbank at each site. Plots were evenly spaced, but were not randomly located because the goal was to start with mixtures of vegetation in most of the plots, and vegetation was distributed in patches along the creekbanks. Therefore, these plots provide useful measures of vegetation change, but are not a random sample of the vegetation at the site. Plots will be replaced each year as necessary to replace any lost to disturbance. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in a separate data set (PLT-GCEM-1801c). This data set includes cumulative long-term observations of plant stem count, height and biomass per plot and species at 3 Altamaha River transition sites from 2012 to 2023, and will be updated annually to include the prior year observations.
Cascade project at North Temperate Lake LTER – Daily Respiration Data for Whole Lake Nutrient Additions 2013-2015
Daily estimates of ecosystem respiration and values of covariates from surface waters of Paul, Peter, and Tuesday lakes from mid-May to early September for the years 2013, 2014, and 2015. Inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus were added to Peter and Tuesday lakes each year while Paul Lake was an unfertilized reference.

Data on dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, particulate organic matter, partial pressure of CO2 and absorbance at 440nm. Samples were collected with a Van Dorn sampler. Organic carbon and absorbance samples were collected from the epilimnion, metalimnion, and hypolimnion. Inorganic samples were collected at depths corresponding to 100%, 50%, 25%, 10%, 5%, and 1% of surface irradiance, as well as one sample from the hypolimnion. Cascade Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER Core Data Nutrients 1991 - 2019
Physical and chemical variables are measured at one central station near the deepest point of each lake. In most cases these measurements are made in the morning (0800 to 0900). Vertical profiles are taken at varied depth intervals. Chemical measurements are sometimes made in a pooled mixed layer sample (PML); sometimes in the epilimnion, metalimnion, and hypolimnion; and sometimes in vertical profiles. In the latter case, depths for sampling usually correspond to the surface plus depths of 50percent, 25percent, 10percent, 5percent and 1percent of surface irradiance. The 1991-1999 chemistry data was obtained from the Lachat auto-analyzer. Like the process data, there are up to seven samples per sampling date due to Van Dorn collections across a depth interval according to percent irradiance. Voichick and LeBouton (1994) describe the autoanalyzer procedures in detail. Nutrient samples were sent to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for analysis beginning in 2000. The Kjeldahl method for measuring nitrogen is not used at IES, and so measurements reported from 2000 onwards are Total Nitrogen.

Cascade Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER Core Data Process Data 1984 - 2016
Data useful for calculating and evaluating primary production processes were collected from 6 lakes from 1984-2016. Chlorophyll a and pheophytin were measured by the same fluorometric method from 1984-2016. In some years chlorophyll and pheophytin were separated into size fractions (total, and a 'small' fraction that passed a 35 um mesh screen). Primary production was measured by the 14C method from 1984-1998. Dissolved inorganic carbon for primary production calculation was calculated from Gran alkalinity titration and air-equilibrated pH until 1987 when this method was replaced by gas chromatography. Until 1995 alkaline phosphatase activity was measured as an indicator of phosphorus deficiency.

Daily measurements of algal bloom variables (chlorophyll, phycocyanin fluorescence, dissolved oxygen, and pH) from the surface waters of Paul, Peter, and Tuesday lakes from mid-May to early September for the years 2011 to 2019, excluding 2012 and 2017. In some years, Peter (2013-2015, 2019) and Tuesday (2013-2015) lakes had inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus added to them daily to cause algal blooms while Paul Lake served as an unmanipulated reference.
Mangrove Coast Collaborative Project, Post-hurricane Irma mangrove forest structure data, Rookery Bay NERR, February 2022 - March 2023
The dataset describes the structure, composition, and condition of mangrove forests in Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) assessed Feb 2022 - Mar 2023, approximately 5 years post Hurricane Irma (2017) and concurrent with Hurricane Ian (Sep 2022). The dataset includes information on each stem greater than or equal to 1 cm DBH (diameter at breast height) rooted within 69 100 m2 circular plots. Information collected includes site ID, location, species, DBH, status (live or dead), damage associated with the hurricane, presence/absence of regrowth, presence/absence of adventitious roots, whether or not stem is part of a multi-stemmed individual, and the canopy conditions (whether the tree has a canopy or is only sprouting at the base of the tree or trunk). This dataset is associated with the Mangrove Coast Collaborative project (2020 - 2024).

Data of predation on mussels from an LTREB project in the Gulf of Maine, USA, from 1996 to 2021.
Experimental clearings in macroalgal (Ascophyllum nodosum) stands were made in 1996 to determine if mussel beds and macroalgal stands on protected intertidal shores in New England represent alternative community states. Uncleared control plots and four sizes of circular clearings (1m, 2m, 4m and 8m in diameter), which mimicked ice scour events, were established in A. nodosum stands at 12 sites on Swan’s Island, Maine, USA. This dataset reports mussel predation on clumps of 15 mussels (Mytilus edulis) using mesh bags placed in the centers of clearings and controls. Mussel mortality was monitored in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2007 and then annually from 2010 to 2021. Causes of death were attributed to dogwhelks (Nucella lapillus), crabs (Carcinus maenas and Cancer spp.) or unknown causes. Presence and activities (e.g., drilling) of dogwhelks was also recorded. The standardized identifiers (Bay, Site, Plot) allow integration with related Environmental Data Initiative packages on community composition and recruitment of mussels, barnacles and rockweeds. Research was funded by NSF's LTREB program.
